Can the Martingayle siblings in freshmen Doria Martingayle and sophomore Harrison Martingayle both become conference champions on Wednesday afternoon at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in the 5A Conference 9 race? Both are pre-race favorites with Doria Martingayle's 5K season best of 19:08 putting her almost a minute faster than the next best in Kellam's Rachel Lewis (20:04), while Harrison Martingayle (16:31 season best) should have a bit more of a challenge from a trio of sub 17 minute 5K runners from Kellam in Zach Hughes, Ryan Zarkowski, and Aran Grieser. Harrison Martingayle finished 6th in last year's Beach District Championships and three non-seniors ahead of him from that district meet that are back this fall are all now racing in the other race of the day in Conference 9. His kid sister Doria opened her season with a swift 19:08 performance at the Newport News Invitational, but has not beaten that time yet despite coming close this past weekend on a more challenging Pole Green Park course at the MileStat.com Invite with a 19:13 clocking. She may have sub 19 on her mind this week and certainly two weeks from now at the regional meet in Chesapeake.

Both Kellam and Princess Anne also figure to battle for the Conference 9 team titles with the Kellam boys and Princess Anne girls as slight favorites coming into Wednesday's races. Kellam girls match up well to Princess Anne through four runners, but will need a fifth to step up to take them down. Meanwhile, the Kellam boys could potentially fit their entire top 5 among the top 7 places which would all but seal a team title.

In the other conference championship meet also being held on the same day at the Sportsplex, the Landstown boys are looking to overtake an Ocean Lakes squad which has been fairly immovable out of first place among the Beach District and Virginia Beach schools over recent years. The Landstown boys rolled in their last meet at the Big Cat Invitational two weekends ago as they took a close runner-up to Group 2A state title favorites Maggie Walker as they saw their entire top 5 run under 17 minutes led by junior Kyle Sabourin (16:08). Both Landstown and Ocean Lakes are currently ranked among the top 25 teams in the state of Virginia regardless of classification and a close battle is anticipated between the two and Cox making for a very strong third best team coming into Wednesday's championship meet. Cox is led by the individual favorite in sophomore Jonathan Lomogoda, who is ranked #23 in the state of Virginia. Lomogoda figures to not only be favored to win today, but also in two week when he toes the line at Bells Mill Park in Chesapeake for the 6A South Regional.

The Ocean Lakes girls have been ranked among the top 10 teams in the state of Virginia throughout the fall despite having their top two returning runners and All-State caliber talent either missing due to injury (Nikk Park) or not at their best racing shape yet (Olivia Bethune). The hope is to have Park racing again if not this week then in two weeks, while their state meet finish would be boosted if Bethune can get back closer to her mid 18 minute 5K PR shape from previous seasons. Nonetheless, their program is well stocked and deep with talent including 3 consistent 19 minute range performers this fall in Rachel Boyce, Madeleine King, and Erica Jackson as three figure to be among the race leaders in the conference meet. Looking to break up the Ocean Lakes pack up front will be Landstown junior Kayla Fisher (19:18 5K season best) and Tallwood sophomore Margaret Aydlett (19:25). Fisher had a breakthrough outdoor season when she lowered her 3200 meter time down to 11:01 and was a state qualifier in the event both indoors and outdoors. An individual state qualifier herself in all three seasons last year as a freshmen, Tallwood's Aydlett is looking to keep pace with her fellow top sophomore Boyce, who has one of the fastest times this fall in the area at 19:18 equaling Fisher's season best.
