VA High School Indoor T&F Weekend Coverage Central (12/20 & 12/21)

Three major invitational meets this weekend for Virginia teams with things kicking off on Friday at Boo Williams for day one of the Winter Break Invitational in Hampton getting underway. On Saturday, MileStat.com will have both photo and video coverage at Boo Williams for day 2 of the meet, the Arthur Ashe Center for the Green Dragon Relays, and at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center in Maryland for the =PR= Holiday Invitational. Boys Highlights

  • A breakthrough performance for Western Branch's Mondryl Glover in the finals of the 55 meter dash clocking a US #2 time of 6.38.
  • Phoebus junior Charles Graham won the 55 meter hurdles for the third consecutive weekend at Boo Williams with a 7.51 clocking in the finals
  • Top seed Marcus Taylor of Highland Springs false started in his preliminary heat, while Green Run's Anthony Scott clocked a US #6 time of 6.48 as the fastest qualifier for the finals. Scott did not show for the finals.
  • Badamillo Alao of Kempsville cleared a new personal best height of 12 feet on his final attempt to win the boys pole vault
  • Western Branch boys anchored by Tyson Robinson run away with the boys 4x800 race in a time of 8:13.32.
  • A near PR throw for Broadwater Academy's Preston Richardson as the private school's best all-around thrower won the event with a best mark of the day at 54'2.50".
  • Oscar Smith senior Isaac Arriola leaped to mark of 46'4.75" to claim first place in the boys' triple jump on Friday.
  • Western Branch girls (32.50) & boys (31.61 MR) dominated the shuttle hurdles relays as expected to start the running events on Saturday morning with a meet record time by the boys hurdlers for Western Branch.

Girls Highlights

  • US #1 time of 7.97 in girls 55 hurdles by Hampton (VA) senior Chantel Ray after putting herself on the national leaderboard earlier with a 8.02 clocking.
  • Carolyn Brown of Phoebus and Asonya Anderson of Heritage went to war in the finals of the girls 55 meter dash with the nation's top 2 fastest times with Brown as the winner in a US #1 clocking of 7.00 and Anderson as the runner-up in a US #2 performance of 7.01. 
  • Maggie Walker girls easily got the 1A-2A auto standard in 4x800, but with their US #2 9:43.47 victory are now the state leaders in the event.  
  • Winning from a slower section of the girls 400 meter dash, Nansemond River sophomore Brandee Johnson posted a US #3 time of 58.08.
  • Norfolk Collegiate's Alexis Shelton went over the bar at 10 feet in the girls pole vault to achieve a new all-time best performance in the event and first place showing on Friday.
  • Faith Ross of Western Branch edged out returning state high jump champ Brianna Hayes of Matoaca in the high jump on earlier misses tiebreaker with both clearing 5'4".
  • Western Branch girls showcased their great depth of sprinters in running times of 1:44 for both their "A" and "B" teams in a 1-2 finish.
  • The Maggie Walker girls took 3 of top 4 places in the 1600 with Emma Call (1st, 5:15), Daisy Banta (2nd, 5:17), & Khloe Pointer (4th, 5:23).
  • 3rd place finisher in 1600, Kellam's Rachel Lewis (5:21) came back to go 1-2 with teammate Madeleine McCarty in 800 as McCarty was the race winner by a slight margin as both were timed at 2:23.

Boys Highlights

  • Forest Park's Mustaqeem Williams uncorked a national leading and VA #9 all-time indoor leap of 24'6" in the long jump!
  • John Seals of West Springfield cleared a US #1 personal best height of 6'9" in the high jump and made several good tries at the school record height of 6'10".
  • US #1 clocking of 34.24 on a flat track in the 300 meter dash for T.C. Williams sophomore Noah Lyles. The top 2 times in the nation in the event are now held by VA sophomores in Lyles and Grassfield's Grant Holloway.
  • Osbourn Park's Nick Causey and Lake Braddock's Alex Corbett battled it out for 7 laps before Causey put the hammer down for a 4:20.08 victory with Corbett holding for second in 4:21.35, which are the top two fastest times in Virginia in the 1600.
  • T.C. Williams sophomore Noah Lyles broke the meet record in 55 meter dash with a US #5 clocking of 6.40.
  • Coming off racing at Foot Locker Nationals in San Diego last weekend, Mackenzie Haight of George C. Marshall won the boys 3200 in a state best of 9:21. NXN individual qualifier Tommy Mulroy of Midlothian was 2nd in 9:36.

Girls Highlights

  • The top three fastest times in the girls 500 were recorded at PG with Woodbridge's Jewel Christian (1st, 1:15.30) able to hold off state 1000 leader Ellie Grove (2nd, 1:15.84).
  • After running 7.01 last night at Boo Williams for second place, Heritage's Asonya Anderson ran 7.23 this morning at PG today for the win in the 55 meter dash.
  • The Woodbridge girls ran the state's fastest time in the 4x400 meter relay at 4:00.48. They had an incredible 3rd leg from Farrah Suber to bring them from behind.
  • Macey Schweikert of James Robinson, last spring's Group AAA 1600 meter champion, had a strong indoor debut race with a 10:57 3200 leading from wire to wire.
  • Kelly Hart of Yorktown achieved the state auto time for 5A girls in the 1600 with a 5:17.46 victory.
  • Jessica Gray of Battlefield tried to pass Battlefield's Kyle Carte earlier, but was unable to get the lead for good until the final straightaway with a solid early season time of 3:04.22 and Carte running strong in second at 3:04.74.
