UPDATED: North Carolina Indoor Action - 1/26 & 1/27

Reebok Boston Indoor Games

It may not have been what Gabby Mayo wanted, but she still ran the 9th fastest time in the US this season. Gabby clocked a 7.50 in the 60m against pros from the US and Jamaica.

Clemson HS Invitational

Polk County's 4x800 team is listed at 8:05.66, but Coach Alan Peoples told me this was a mistake. There was an error in counting the laps yet the officials still posted the results.

Ashley Bethune of Harding led the way for NC with her time of 7.11 in the 55m dash. It was good enough for 3rd place and moves her into 9th on the All-Time NC list. Ashley also finished 2nd in the 55m HH with a time of 8.21. This time is among the fastest in NC history, but not quite as fast as her previous best of 8.18.

Olivia Ellington of Watauga finished 4th in the 400, 1:00.62, and 5th in the 200.

New Bern's Kelvin Hardesty won the 55m dash with a time of 6.46. Justin Flemming of Freedom ran 6.62, good enough for 3rd. 4th and 5th places also went to NC athletes, North Rowan's Phillip Bush and Vance's Reece Johnson.

Kelvin also won the 200m dash in a time of 22.65. Freedom's Benny Davis took 2nd with a sub 23 performance, running 22.87. Butler's Daniel Wemboula also placed in the top 5, running 23.40 for 4th.

Becca Hazeltine of Weddington and Bredgette Hills of TC Roberson both jumped 5' in the high jump. They placed 3rd and 4th respectively.

TC Roberson's 4x800 team finished 3rd in the girl's race. They ran the fastest time in NC up to this point, with a time of 10:08.88.

In the boy's 400m dash, New Bern's Anthony Hendrix finished 2nd with a time of 50.25. Justin Flemming of Freedom placed 3rd in 50.67.

Makenzie Mullinax of South Rowan finished 2nd in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-00.

Ranae Nelson of Harding won the long jump with the best leap in NC this season. She jumped 18-9.25 while Taryn Wentz of Forest Hills finished 2nd with a jump of 18-3.25. Ranae's jump is 9th best in NC history indoors.

Alex Wiggan of Vance ran the fastest 1600m time among NC athletes with a time of 4:33.35. His time was good enough for 5th overall.

North Carolina dominated the boy's 55m HH, taking the 6 of the top 7 spots. Spencer Adams of Butler HS won the event in 7.50. He was followed closely by Phillip Bush of North Rowan who clocked a 7.56. Vance's Isaac McReynolds and Rashawn Moore placed 3rd and 4th.

Charlotte Catholic's Abby Osborn finished 4th in the 1600 with a time of 5:39.04.

In the girl's shot put, Aslynn Halvorson threw 40-09 for the win. She won by over 7 feet over Shanara Wallace of Asheville.

Phillip Bush of North Rowan continues to have an excellent indoor season. He began the season with a 55m HH win at the Wally Gilbert Invitational in Virginia. This looks to be his first attempt at the long jump this season and it is an incredible start. His jump of 23-2 to win at Clemson is the #1 jump in the state this indoor season, and also puts him among the top 15 in the United States.

New Bern's 4x400 team remained undefeated as they won with a time of 3:30.38. It was slower than their time from the Eastern HS Challenge, but shows they are the #1 contender for the state title.

South Rowan's, Maverick Miles, won the pole vault with a clearance of 14-00. He is getting very close to making the NC All-Time list.

Kencie Brewer threw over 50' in the shot put to win by a margin of almost 5 feet.

Leesville Road Last Chance Polar Bear (outdoors)

Callan Fike of Athens Drive is definitely back! The XC season may not have gone as she expected due to an injury, but so far this track season, Fike must be pleased. She recently ran 2:56 for 1000m (outdoors) and at the Last Chance Meet, she ran 5:02 for 1600m all by herself. Second place was more than 40 seconds behind.

Her teammate, Christy Johnson, won both the 300 and 500 meter runs with times of 41.64c and 1:21.04c.

Sean Sewell of Cardinal Gibbons made his 2007 debut, running in the 1000m run. Sean had a very successful XC season, but typically CG doesn't compete during the indoor season. However, Sean showed up today and went under 2:40, running 2:39.80.

In the boy's 1600m, a couple of the states' top XC runners went to work. Sam Mordecai, Raleigh Broughton, won the event in 4:27.10 and close behind him was 9th grader, Nick Graw of Enloe, in 4:29.10. This time is good enough to qualify Nick for the freshmen mile at the Nike Outdoor Championships, and it's only January.

Virginia Tech HS Invitational

The Virginia Tech meet turned out to be everything it was expected to be.

West Charlotte's Trenton Guy, Jr. continued his winning ways in the 55m dash. Last weekend, Trenton ran 6.31 at the Eastern High School Challenge and claimed the #1 spot in the United States. Saturday, Trenton ran 6.30 in the prelims and in the finals to improve upon his own US #1 time. Trenton also ran the US #2 time in the 300m dash on Saturday. He and Sean Holston (VA), who owns 3 US #1 times this indoor season, had a great battle. Sean ran 33.68 which is the #9 time ever run in the US and Trenton ran 34.17. His time ranks him 2nd on the All-Time North Carolina list, only behind J-Mee Samuels who currently runs for Arkansas University.

Edward Alexander, Trenton's teammate, ran 6.41 in the prelims and 6.42 in the finals for 2nd place, just like last weekend.

Of course you would expect something fast with Trenton and Edward joining up together. West Charlotte's 4 x 200 team ran 1:28.84, good enough for the 2nd fastest time in the United States this indoor season.

Dylan Ferris of East Forsyth, was a bit under the weather last weekend at the Eastern HS Challenge and wasn't able to run a solid 1600/1000 double. However, Dylan ran the 2nd fastest time in NC history on Saturday with a time of 2:30.91. Dylan's time ranks him in front of NC greats like: Bobby Mack (North Forsyth), Matt Debole (Mount Tabor), Eric Mack (North Forsyth), and Brandon Jones (Independence).

Johnny Dutch, Clayton HS, wasn't able to improve upon his National Record time of 7.07 in the 55m HH, but he did win as expected. Johnny ran 7.18 in the finals to win and set a new meet record.

Joanna Wright of RJ Reynolds cleared 11-6 in the girl's pole vault to take 2nd place. This makes it 2 weekends in a row that Joanna has cleared 11-6 after only vaulting 10-6 prior to the Eastern HS Challenge.

Adrianne Soo of Durham Academy, still figuring out what this "Indoor Track" stuff is all about finished 2nd in the 3200. She ran 20 seconds faster than last weekend at UNC. Her time of 11:10.79 ranks her #1 in the state for this indoor season. It is also the 9th fastest time ever run indoors by a NC athlete. On Saturday, she ran the 1600, and ran 7 seconds faster than last weekend. Adrianne finished 3rd with a time of 5:14.04. That's the fastest indoor time of the season among NC athletes.

Providence High's 4x800 team ran about 10 seconds than they did last weekend at UNC. Their time of 8:16.38 puts them #1 in the state so far.

Isaiah Thompson of Asheville HS had a very successful weekend in Blacksburg. Isaiah won and jumped 6-6 in the high jump to tie NC's best this season. He also jumped 44-6.25 in the triple jump competition.

Kiara Crutchfield of Ragsdale finished 6th in the long jump with her best jump of the season. She went over the 18' mark with a jump of 18-1.75. Gabrielle Glenn of Providence, ran 7.01 last week to take 2nd to Gabby Mayo. This week, the spotlight was on her as she ran 7.15 in the prelims and 7.18 in the finals to win the 55m dash. Gabby also ran the 300m. Her time of 40.75 is a bit slower than last weekend, but she is still one of NC's best.

Mount Tabor's Courtney Bowen, ran 3:07.21 in the 1000m. That time ranks her among the top girls in NC this season. Also, her teammate, Courtney Whittington ran 5:22 in the 1600.

Parkland's 4x400 team ran a very fine 4:13.51. This time ranks them 3rd in NC this indoor season. Mount Tabor's team ran 4:14.01 for the 4th fastest time in the state.

Charlton Rolle of RJ Reynolds won the boy's long jump with a leap of 22-11.50. That is the 2nd best jump of the season, only behind Phillip Bush of North Rowan. Charlton also finished 2nd in the 55m HH behind Johnny Dutch. Charlton ran 7.43 in the finals and 7.63 in the prelims.

Southwest Guilford's Jason Roberts finished 4th in the boy's shot put with a throw of 52-3.

Scott Houston of Northwest Guilford couldn't repeat his performance from last week, but was able to take 3rd place. He cleared 14-6 last weekend and 14-00 on Saturday.

North Carolina had 5 of the top 8 males in the 55m HH. They were: Johnny Dutch, Charlton Rolle, Korel Mack (RJ Reynolds), Cordell Livingston (SW Guilford), & Charles Lindsay (Parkland).

Dominique Tate of Carver HS finished 4th in the 55m with a state qualifying time of 6.54.

Providence's Miles Walker won the boy's 500m with a time of 1:05.21. That time ranks him 3rd in NC this season behind LaMarr Davis & Anthony Hendrix.

Ian Williamson of Green Hope finished 2nd in the event not far behind Miles. Ian ran 1:05.55 which ranks him 4th in NC so far in 2007.

John Curtiss of Providence finished 4th in the 1000m run. He ran 2:35.03 which ranks him 2nd in NC so far this season. It also puts him 12th in NC history.

Not far behind Curtiss was Thomas Young of Reagan with a time of 2:36.16. Thomas has been running very well this indoor season.

RJ Reynolds boy's 4x400 team ran an impressive 3:28.62. That puts them right in the mix for the win at the NCHSAA state meet.

In the boy's 1-mile run, Dakota Lowery of West Johnston finished 3rd in a time of 4:21.44. His time is the fastest this season in NC. He is also getting very close to his outdoor PR of 4:18. The experience in New York last weekend must have helped, as he ran 3 seconds faster on the banked track.

Cumberland County Polar Bear

The Jacksoville 4x800 team ran 10:24.2. We had been looking for a time from them as they were one of the better 3A XC teams this past season.

Farrish of Lumberton ran a solid 1:07.55 in the boy's 500m.

Lea Anna Godwin of Triton HS who has been running well this outdoor season doubled up in the 1000m and the 1600m. She ran 3:13 and 5:32 respectively.
