When the VHSL announced plans for a new classification system last year, we knew major changes were in store. Virginia high school athletes will be crisscrossing the state this week as they head to their respective championship meets. Three different sites will host the finest athletes in the state as they look to write a brand new chapter in the record books.
The biggest collection of talent will join together down at Boo Williams Sportsplex for the 5A and 6A meets. For the first time ever, the meet will be contested over the course of three days with action kicking off on Thursday afternoon. Brandon Miles and Sean Leyh of Milestat.com will be there to cover all three days of action.
Using the indoor database as our source of information, it is easy to discern just how many great performances we may see between the two meets. Of the 150 athletes that compromise the top 5 rankings in each event in Virginia, 102, or 68%, will be in attendance in Hampton. This number includes 6 athletes that currently hold the national lead in 7 different events: Meshala Morton – Girl’s 55m, Chantel Ray – Girl’s 55m Hurdles, Mustaqeem Williams – Boy’s 55m & Long Jump, Grant Holloway – Boy’s 55m Hurdles, Steven Dunbar – Boy’s High Jump, and John Warren – Boy’s Triple Jump. An additional 29 performances by athletes competing at Boo Williams are also ranked in the top 10 in the United States.
As a lead in to our more in-depth 5A & 6A previews, the chart below showcases any athlete or relay team that is currently ranked in the top 5 in the state of Virginia in their respective events. The national ranking of each performance is also listed if it falls within the top 50 of the United States.
One thing is for certain – Boo Williams is the place to be come 2:00 PM on Thursday.
