Women's team records its highest team and individual finish in the Big East
BRONX, NY -- The Virginia Tech women's cross country team made the most of its BIG EAST swan song, finishing sixth with 144 points at the BIG EAST Championships, held today at historic Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y. Meanwhile, the men's team came in ninth with 250 points in the 12-team field. Notre Dame captured the women's title with 59 points, while Georgetown won the men's race with 29 points.
The women's performance was keyed by senior Marlies Overbeeke's eighth-place finish. Overbeeke completed the six-kilometer course in 21:05, earning her All-BIG EAST honors. Overbeeke is the first Hokie, male or female, to earn All-BIG EAST status in cross country. Her time was behind that of Providence's Kim Smith, who finished first in 20:01, setting a new course record.
Junior Jessica Morris turned in the Hokies' second best time with a 21:44 finish in 17th place. Rounding out the scoring was senior Kim Milbourn in 35th (22:30), freshman Morgan Ekemo in 40th (22:40) and sophomore Moriah O'Brien in 44th (22:49).
The men's squad was led by junior Michael Lawson, who came in 29th with a time of 26:08. Jonathan Fasulo of Villanova took top honors in the men's race with a 24:35 finish. Tech's next finisher was L.A. Snead in 43rd place with a time of 26:42, followed by Mike D'Amato in 50th place (27:04). Completing the Hokies' scoring were freshmen Christian Barlow in 62nd (27:40) and Duncan Vick in 66th (27:53).
The Hokies return to action in two weeks on Nov. 15, when they travel to the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships in Greenville, N.C. Both teams will look to build off their BIG EAST performance in hopes of securing and NCAA Championship berth.
