DAY TWO HIGHLIGHTS:

Indoor national champion Noah Lyles of T.C. Williams cruised US #3 20.75 to win the 6A 200m dash.

Boys Highlights:

  • Grant Holloway jumped US #1 25-8 in the finals of the long jump! Not only is that the top mark in the nation, but it's also a personal best by more than two feet and the second-best jump ever recorded in the state of Virginia - the state record is 25-10.75. Is there any event the Grassfield junior can't do? Holloway scores 46 points to push Grassfield to the 5A-6A State Title, which is the first time that Holloway has won a team state title. He also won the High Jump (6-8) and 110m hurdles in All-Conditions US #10 13.61 (+2.4). Holloway's other points came from the 200m, where he ran 21.65 to place fourth behind the Lyles brothers.
  • The Lyles brothers of T.C. Williams showed up big on Day 2, as Noah - the indoor national champion for 200m - clocked US #3 20.76 to win the 200m ahead of Josephus (US #5 21.02). Noah returned to run US #10 10.46 to win the 100m. Josephus defends his 400m state title in 47.41.
  • Alex Corbett of Lake Braddock ran a big negative split to win the 3200m, throwing in a 67 second surge, 3:20 for his final 1200m as he clocked 9:13.56 for the win.

Girls Highlights:

  • Kate Murphy of Lake Braddock and Rachel McArthur resume their thrilling rivalry, starting with the 3200m first thing on Saturday morning. Through the past eight races, these ladies' margin of victory is an average of just .76 seconds! Through splits of 78/2:36/3:55/5:15/7:55/9:14, the sophomore duo ran stride for stride the entire way. McArthur made a move on the backstretch, but Murphy pulled even on the home straightaway as McArthur of Patriot got the win, 10:19.9 to 10:19.94! Those times ranks US #13 and US #14.
  • The duo returned in the 1600m, which Murphy won convincingly off a 2:20 final 800m split for a final time of 4:51.67 as McArthur finished in second, just ahead of Lauren Berman, 4:55.06 to 4:56.30.
  • Lauryn Ghee is just a sophomore but she is already following in the winning tradition set by Grassfield's Holloway. Ghee won the 100m in 11.62 and 200m in 24.23; the 200m was a state meet record.

DAY ONE HIGHLIGHTS:

Quincy Watts advanced from the 110m hurdle prelims with the fastest time of the day in 14.0. He will face indoor national hurdles champion Grant Holloway in the finals on Saturday.

Boys Highlights:

  • Don't sleep on the Lyles brothers! Noah Lyles the T.C. Williams junior has stayed quiet since Penn Relays but threw down a 10.59 in prelims for 100m and a 21.58 in the 200m prelims,while Josephus Lyles threw down a 21.16 with the fastest 6A 200m qualifying time.
  • Quincy Watts (14.0) advances as top qualifier for 110m hurdles, ahead of indoor national champion for 60m hurdles, Grant Holloway (14.1). However, Holloway has a 13.91 credit to his name this season and still must be considered the favorite. Holloway also advanced as No. 2 seed in 200m and won the high jump is 6-8.

Western Branch remained undefeated to American squads since 2014 in winning the 4x800m over US #8 Patriot with a time of 9:06, just outside the top ten in the nation this year.

Girls Highlights:

  • The girls 4x800m featured a showdown between indoor national champions and perennial state champions Western Branch with young upstart squad Patriot, who won the Championship of America Distance Medley Relay at the Penn Relays this year. Westfield actually was the first to exchange (2:18), but Western Branch's Faith Ross ran a monster second leg to go from a 20 meter deficit to a 40 meter lead. She handed off halfway at 4:30 with a 50 meter lead over Patriot, who managed to close the gap enough so that the Bruins' Amanda Thomas had just a one second lead at the final exchange (6:57) as recent adidas Dream Mile invitee Rachel McArthur ran the anchor for Patriot. Thomas still held on for a five-second lead at the bell lap, splitting about 60 seconds (7:57) and finished with an overall time of 9:06 as the Bruins remain undefeated to American teams since 2014.
  • Titiana Marsh of Thomas Dale tied her National Freshman Class Record in the triple jump, leaping to 40-2. The jump ranks US #4 this year.
  • Milan Parks of Western Branch is the top advancer in the girls 100m hurdles, clocking 14.0 for a season-best. Can she match her PR and go sub-14 in the finals? Teammate Faith Ross wins her prelim in 14.3
