The 2015 MileStat Outdoor T&F Awards

Girls' Event Specific Awards

Girl Sprinter of The Year

Lauryn Ghee (Grassfield - Sophomore)

If you want to talk about dominant sprinters then you have to begin your conversation with Lauryn Ghee. She led the state for nearly the entire season in the 100, 200, and 400 and only suffered a single loss in state all-season in any of these events.

Girl Hurdler of The Year

Funlayo Oluwole (Western Branch - Senior)

This award was very close but thanks to a stellar state meet performance and anchoring a national record shuttle hurdle relay team, Funlayo takes the photo finish in this award. She ran 13.38 which was good enough for #2 all-time in the 100h and also ran herself onto the top 25 list in the 300h while also winning the 6A state title.

Girl Distance Runner of The Year

Kate Murphy (Lake Braddock Secondary)

This has to be the deepest award of any this season. We are lucky to not only have tons of talent in the distance events but also have young talent as well. Leading the front in nearly all of these races is Kate Murphy. Though she sits behind in some events' all-time lists, she holds a significant advantage in the head-to-head category.

Girl Jumper of The Year

Titiana Marsh (Thomas Dale - Freshman)

This was not a hard one at all considering Titiana ended the season leading the state in both the long and triple jumps while also only being a freshman. She jumped 19-10 and 41-2 and was that 6A State Champion in both events. Something tells us she could probably high jump as well.

Girl Vaulter of The Year

Kathryn Tomczak (Lafayette - Senior)

Kathryn was the only girl to make it onto the all-time list this season and completely dominated her competition in the process. She cleared 12-9 this year and finished the season winning the Southern Track Classic, then Conferenes, then Regionals, and then 3A States.

Girl Thrower of The Year

Zakiya Rashid (Nansemond River - Senior)

Zakiya simply dominated the state this year and finished the season as the best shot putter and second best discus thrower on the season with a career best in both better then anyone else in the state. She swept the throwing titles in 4A this season and moved her way into the top ten in both throws now.

Girls Relay of The Year

Western Branch Girls Shuttle Hurdle Relay

National Record, National Champions

There were many great relay teams this year, mainly from two or three schools, but the only one to break, no shatter, a national record was Western Branch's Shuttle Hurdle Relay team. This team comprised of Faith Ross, Milan Parks, Funlayo Olwuole, and Chaunise Warrior blazed a 55.36 to break their own national record by 1.19 seconds!
