Olympic dreams on minds of two local standouts at Penn Relays

LaShawn Merritt and Charles Clark will say that the Penn Relays is the biggest track event next to the Olympics.

On Saturday, both participated at the oldest and largest track and field meet. And come this summer, both hope to be at the Olympics in Beijing too.

Merritt, who starred at Portsmouth’s Wilson High School, should be there. Last summer, he became the ninth sprinter ever to break the 44-second barrier in the men’s 400 meters when he ran 43.96 to win a silver medal at the World Championships in Osaka, Japan. He also won a gold medal as a member of the 1,600 relay.
