The second to last stop on the road to the VHSL State Championships is this week with the regional championships being contested across the state. The Northwest Region and Northern Region rolled out some impressive performances on Friday with the Eastern Region Meet as the last AAA region meet to be completed on Saturday at Todd Stadium, the site of the VHSL AAA State Championships.
Tasia Potasinski US #9 2:10.42 800 meet record @ Northern Region Meet
The present was on displayed in the girls 800 meter run on Friday evening at the Northern Region Meet with AAA 1600 and 1000 meter state champion Tasia Potasinski (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) running a meet record and US #9 time of 2:10.42. While the Westfield senior has established herself as a favorite to win more state title hardware next week at Todd Stadium, Grassfield freshmen Amanda Smith (pictured below by Andy Paisley) was establishing herself for the present and future in the event at the Eastern Region Meet as she blazed an 800 time of 2:13.25 at Todd Stadium.
Artis breaks 14 seconds in 110H!
Western Branch senior Jeffrey Artis got out quick in the 110 meter hurdles finals at the Eastern Region and never looked backed as he dusted off a strong field with the state's first sub 14 second clocking in the event at 13.99, which ranks among the top 20 in the country. (Photo by Andy Paisley)
The wind tunnel known as Sports Backers Stadium did not deter Midlothian senior Jason Witt from motoring around the track for four laps in fierce winds to throw down a statement making and meet record breaking 4:12.23 in the 1600 meter run. He later came back for a second win in the 800 meter run in 1:57.07 with a narrow win over Robert Reynolds of Lee-Davis. Witt was one of three double boys' winners in the meet though as Douglas Freeman had a pair of two event champions with teammates Ulrick Smith and Michael Quash sharing runner of the meet awards as Smith took the 400 (48.88) and 200 (21.84) meter dashes, while Quash won both hurdle races (14.22 110H, 37.89 300H) and was second to teammate Smith in the 200 (21.94).
