This year, there has been a lot of activity on the girls' hammer throw. Last year's state record (the best hammer mark thrown in a USATF-sanctioned meet by a Virginia high school student) of 133'2" (40.59m) set by Aimee Veatch, Cave Spring HS, Roanoke, was broken by Jessie Echard (Robinson HS, Fairfax, VA) with a throw of 133'9" (40.77) at an open meet at Howard Community College, Columbia, MD on May 11, under rainy conditions.
The record was broken again by Natalie Baird (Park View HS, Sterling, VA), with a throw of 144'4" (44.00m) at the Potomac Valley Track Club all-comer's meet this past Sunday, May 25. All three current and former record holders are expected to be at the upcoming DC/MD/VA high school hammer state championships. This is a USATF-sanctioned event to be held at Falls Church high school on Sunday June 8.

Allison Horner, representing Throw1Deep, won with women’s 4k hammer throw
competition at the USATF-GA Association championships in Atlanta, GA on
May 11, 2008 with a throw of 59.15m.
The sports software used for the meet converted Horner’s distance of
59.15m to 194’01”. Source used for converting from metric to imperial
for high school reporting are Track & Field News conversion tables
which convert 59.15m to 194’00”.
This performance places Horner as the second longest American high school
hammer thrower behind Maureen Griffin (Pocatello, ID) who threw 201’07” in 1998,
and third on the U.S. high school all time list behind Griffin and Jennifer
Dahlgren (Argentina/Klein High School, TX) who threw 195’02” in 2002.
