Virginia, pound for pound, is a track powerhouse. That of course means that we have a very high level of competition in our state and a high bar for what is elite. One team in particular has flown under the radar for far too long and it is now time to discuss how three girls have taken over a 105 year old school's record book.
This team is Maury High School in Norfolk and these three girls are Brooke Stith, Bria Stith, and Maya Seay. Together they have taken down 12 school records with Brooke and Maya eyeing even more.
Ever since the Stith sisters transferred from Brunswick to Maury in 2015, the team was on a path to greatness. In those three championships since that time they have finished 3rd, 2nd, and 2nd in the 5A State competition.
Though superstar Bria Stith has now graduated, Brooke and Maya have shown nothing but growth, speed, and tenacity this season. They may have one less ace up their sleeves but this could be the season they take home that title.
Having an especially strong season is Maya Seay who this weekend threw down a US #3 7.97 in the 55mH. She also sits at VA #5 in the 55 with a 7.13 performance. Seay took home the 55mH title at the very competitive VT Premier Invite showing that she is very ready for the high stress post-season.
Her teammate Brook Stith though is having a stellar season as well and if we know something about the Stith sisters we can almost guarantee she is saving a lot for the post-season. She is currently ranked in the 5A State virtual meet to score in the 55, 300, 500, 55mH, long jump, and triple jump competitions.
5A State Virtual Meet
Winning a team title is hard at any level. It starts with good coaching and ends with the right group of athletes buying in. Maury definitely has proved they have the coaches and this group of ladies have bought in. If they can find just a few more points and hold off Nansemond River then we are in for a show down at Boo Williams this year.
Maury has been around for 105 years and this year we are getting to see the best athletes they have ever had compete for their spot in history.
