Amanda Smith (pictured left by John Herzog) in her first year at Grassfield High school, has accomplished more than most people accomplish in their entire high school year. The freshman from Chesapeake made her mark on the eastern region and the state early in her career, and has come out blazing again this year.

Last year recorded one of the states best times in the 500 meter dash clocking a 1:15.59 at the AAA state meet at George Mason to place 5th. With her first all state performance coming in her first season of track, Smith headed into outdoor with confidence and looked to tackle the even longer 800 meter.

The talented runner has shown that she has the endurance to run the longer events as she holds at personal record of 19:21 in the 5k. This time earned her all-region recognition as she placed 12th at the Eastern Region meet this year. In the outdoor season of 2008, Amanda Smith came into the AAA state meet slightly overshadowed by other runners. With Tasia Potasinski’s 2:10 clocking at the Northern region meet it looked as if Smith did not have a chance.

Clocking a personal record of 2:13.25 at the Eastern Region meet, Smith came into the race ready to pull off the upset. After the first lap Smith was in perfect position waiting in 6th place for her opportunity to strike. Coming off the last corner on to the home straight away Smith chased down the leader, Paige Johnston, and won the race in the last 5 meters with a 2:15.82.

One of the many girls in recent years to win state championships in their freshmen year, Smith (pictured right by Jesse Hutcheson) will look to carry her success into her sophmore year this year. Off to a good start, the Grassfield sophomore has clocked a 1:17.35 in the 500 meter, and has experimented with the 1000 meter run. With a 3:01.68 performance alone at the Southeastern Invitational, Smith has earned herself a spot on the national rankings list, and is currently number two in the state behind Midlothian’s Paige Johnston.

In the video Smith discusses the possibility of changing to the thousand meter run and her goals for the season. Whether she decides to run the 500 meter or the 1000 meter girls in both events should be on the lookout for the girl from Grassfield.
