Albemarle Senior Rachel Lloyd Dips Under 21 & 20 Minutes For The 1st Time & Win at Great American

CARY, Nc. - Not all major victories come in the Race of Champions, sometimes the big victories come in the JV race from athletes you may not know by name but know in essence. Rachel Lloyd (Albemarle) was the JV I Champion this Saturday and is definitely one of the biggest winners of the meet.

Check out Rachel Lloyd's Athlete Profile

Rachel's race this weekend started out well. She got out hard and thru the mile and 2K was in great position. She clocked a 7:58 2K which was good enough for 6th place at the time with a nine second deficit.

Later in the race Rachel started picking off runners one by one. She went on to say she didn't even know she was in the lead and constantly thought she was chasing another runner. That wasn't the case though as Rachel pulled away from the field to bring home the victory in 19:58.9. That time was 34 seconds ahead of the next competitor.

Now any performance under 20:00 is special but this was not only Rachel's first major win but it was a win that saw her break 21 and 20 minutes for the first time.

As a senior on a top team in 5A, Rachel is hoping to make a strong case to be on the varsity squad at the state meet. This would be a first for her and a good chance for her to receive high honors as Albemarle is one of the best teams in the classification. Her next race and another chance for her to have a big break through and potentially make the varsity lineup will be at the Albemarle Invitational this Saturday at Panorama Farms.
