NJ Stars Rewriting Record Books, Dropping Huge Splits PR's

Sydney McLaughlin made her long anticipated college debut in the 400 hurdles at the National Relays this past Friday in Fayetteville, Ark., and she did what she seemingly always does-she smashed a record.

The freshman at Kentucky out of Union Catholic High School blasted a 53.60 to break her own World Junior record and take over the world lead in the 400 hurdles this season.

The 2016 Olympian also ran on Kentucky's winning 4x100 relay (NCAA #4 42.84) and capped off her remarkable triple with a 49.47 third leg on the winning 4x400 to lead the Wildcats to the team title.  McLaughlin has also run a world leading 50.07 this season in the 400, and was on Kentucky's 4x400 team when it ran a NCAA leading 3:26.92 at the Florida Relays last month.

A pair of NJ throwing studs rewrote the record books and dominated the shot put at the National Relays.  

Michigan sophomore Andrew Liskowitz (Christian Brothers Academy) finished first with a school record 66-6 ½ to earn Big Ten Field Event Athlete of the Week. Liskowitz's 66-6 1/2 broke the Wolverines school record of 63-7 ½ set in 2015 by Cody Riffle and is No. 3 in the NCAA rankings this season.

And Tennessee freshman Jordan West (Rahway High School) continued his remarkable rookie season by smashing the Vols school record with a heave of 64-7 ¾ to place second to Liskowitz. West's 64-7 3/4 broke Chuck Locke's Tennessee record of 64-1 that stood since 1982, and moves West up to No. 10 on the NCAA list for this season.

NJ now has three shot putters in the top 10 in the NCAA rankings. South Carolina's Josh Awotunde (Delsea) is No. 8 with a 65-2 ¼. Awotunde is also No. 32 on the NCAA list in the discus with the 185-2 he threw to place fourth at Penn.

In a battle between the two fastest 400 hurdlers in NJ high school history, Florida freshman Cory Poole (East Orange High) finished fourth and Michigan junior Taylor McLaughlin (Union Catholic) was sixth in a season best 50.76 at the National Relays. Poole, who broke McLaughlin's NJ high school record in the 400 hurdles last year, is No. 10 in the NCAA rankings with the 50.35 he ran at the Florida Relays. McLaughlin's 50.76 places him 14th.    

Georgetown freshman Rey Rivera (Old Bridge High School) ran 1:49.09 on the 5th place 4x800,1:51.34 on the 5th place DMR, and 47.51 on the winning Eastern 4x400 at the Penn Relays.

Rider senior Sara Gardner (Delaware Valley) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women's Track Performer of the Week this week for the second time this season. Gardner earned the honor after breaking Rider's school record in the 100 hurdles with her sixth place finish in an ECAC qualifying time of 13.51. Gardner transferred to Rider from Mount St. Mary in 2015. At Mount St. Mary, Gardner was named the Northeast Rookie of the Meet at the 2015 NEC Championships when she won the 100 hurdles in a school record 13.93.

Villanova senior Ben Malone (Pascack Valley) helped the Wildcats pick up a pair of Championship of America titles at Penn. He ran 2:58.4 leading off the winning DMR, and split 4:04.6 in the 4xmile C of A.

George Kelly of Adams State (Christian Brothers) ran a 4:03.0 third leg in the 4xmile Championships of American to give his team the lead at the Penn Relays. Adams State wound up fifth.  

UPenn's 10th place 4xmile team at the Penn Relays featured the sophomore Daly twins from River Dell-Colin Daly ran 4:11.2, and Will Daly went 4:20.6

With three NJ guys in its lineup, freshman Taj Burgess (Carteret High), and Boaz Madeus and Jermaine Griffith, former teammates at Nottingham High, the Scarlet Knights finished fourth in the 4x400 Championship of America race in 3:04.67, No. 13 in the NCAA rankings, at the Penn Relays. Griffith went 47.4, Madeus 46.5, and Burgess anchored in 44.82.

Freshman Kyra Velock (Mountain Lakes) and junior Chandi Piiru (Union Catholic) helped Monmouth place third in the 4x800 Championship of American race at the Penn Relays in a school record 8:32.55. Velock ran 2:10.65 and Piiru went 2:07.85.

The women's 4x800 at Penn was stacked with NJ talent. Richmond, with Marisa Ruskan (Bridgewater-Raritan) splitting 2:10.28, Maria Acosta (Paramus Catholic) running 2:08.20, and Brooke Fazio (Ridge High) going 2:10.17, placed sixth in a school record 8:44.32.

Westwood High grad Corinne Myers split 2:11.13 on Northeastern's ninth-place 4x800 squad, and Ocean City grad Rachel Stremme ran 2:12.94 on UPenn's fourth-place team that ran 8:35.12.

Ohio State's Zack Bazile (St. Joseph of Montvale) was named the Men's Outstanding Performer of the Meet at the 109th Drake Relays. He won the long jump with a wind-aided 25-3 1/4, ran on the winning 4x100, and was third in the 100 dash. Bazile is ranked No. 17 in the NCAA in the long jump with a 25-8 1/4.

Duke junior Domonique Panton (Freehold Township) soared 42-2 to place in the triple jump at the Virginia Grand Prix meet in Charlottesville to smash the Blue Devils record of 41-5 ¾ that was set in 2001 by Jodi Schlesinger. Panton's 42-2 places her No. 36 in the NCAA rankings. Georgia senior Keturah Orji (Mount Olive) continues to lead the NCAA with her 47-0 ¼ at Mt. SAC Relays   


Winslow High grad Torie Robinson led off Clemson's sprint medley that won the Championship of America race in 3:45.05 and was second in the 100 dash in 11.32 at the Penn Relays. Penn State's Kiara Lester (Deptford High) anchored the 4x100 that was seventh in the C of A, ran a 200 leg on the third-place SMR, and split 54.30 on the 6th place 4x400 in the college race.  

Oklahoma's Jess Woodard (Cherokee High) won the shot put for the second straight year at the Penn Relays with a throw of 55-7 1/2

Tia Livingston (Union Catholic) anchored UPenn's school record shuttle hurdle team that placed third at the Penn Relays in 56.43.

The men's Olympic Development mile at the Penn Relays was loaded with NJ studs. Rob Napolitano (Red Bank Catholic) was third in 3:59.80. Travis Mahoney (Old Bridge) was fourth in 3:59.96. Chris Hatler (Pope John) placed sixth in 4:00.54, and Ramapo senior Jeremy Hernandez (Clifton), the first Division 3 runner to go sub 4 indoors, was 11th in 4:02.52. Mahoney also won the 3,000 steeplechase at Penn in 8:43.21.

Senior Ta'riq Thomas (Woodstown High) became the first Penn Relays champion ever from Delaware Valley College when he soared a school record 23-11 to win the college long jump.

Penn State freshman Luke Grodeska (St. Rose) won the college men's shot pout at Penn with a PR of 55-8 3/4.

Penn State's Devin Bradham (Williamstown High) cleared 6-11 ½ to place second on misses in the high jump at the Penn Relays. Bradham is now ranked No. 66 in the NCAA.

Monmouth freshman Danielle Steff (Rancocas Valley) unloaded a PR and U.S. Junior National qualifying 156-0, No. 3 in school history, to place 8th in the women's javelin at the Penn Relays.  

Indiana's Eric Bethea (Piscataway High) was fourth in the triple jump at the Penn Relays with a 50-11 ½. Bethea is ranked No. 21 in the NCAA in the TJ with the 51-8 ½.

UConn's Seth Zuidema (Midland Park High), who placed third in the javelin at Penn with a 223-2, is No. 27 in the NCAA with a 226-10. Auburn freshman Cade Antonucci (Audubon) is ranked No. 19 with his 231-5.
