LINCOLN, NE --
The first annual adidas Midwest Indoor Track Classic, in just a short period of time that the
meet has been promoted, has drawn a large amount of interest in the meet. The meet will be
held on Saturday, February 9, 2002 at the brand new state-of-the-art Devaney Sports Complex in
Lincoln, Nebraska. Meet director, Chris Lester's main objective is to provide an indoor track
meet for athletes in the midwestern states that do not have indoor track seasons, but he is
also trying to gather some of the top athletes in the nation to make the trip to Lincoln to
compete.
The Bob Devaney Sports Center is the home of one of the premier 200 meter indoor tracks in the
world. One of only 7 banked hydraulic tracks in the world, the 6-42 inch lanes on the oval and
the entire building is covered with Mondo surfacing. Mondo is considered by most experts to be
the fastest surface in existence. The track completed in late 2000 has huge 67 feet (20.42
meters) radius curves which have already produced great performances in every event. The $2.97
million project includes an 8 lane straight-away for the short sprint and hurdle races. The
spacious infield area is used exclusively for all the field events. Approximately 4000 seats
provide spectators wth excellent viewing for every event.
Already many Virginia athletes have expressed interest in traveling to the Cornhusker state to
compete in this great meet being held on the best track in the nation. Some have even made early
committments to traveling to the meet such as 9:17 3200m runner Bryce Ruiz of Jamestown, who
most likely will compete in an individual event there as well with his team in the 4xmile. The
Jamestown 4xmile squad will use the meet as a warmup as they will be shooting for All-American
status in the 4xmile next year with 3 runners returning running 4:30 or faster 1600 meter times.
MileStat.com will be making the trip out to Lincoln to bring you on-site coverage of the meet.
We encourage all Virginian athletes to attend the meet as it should be a good one.
