Chapa and Wyss smoke fast road 5K's

RICHMOND, VA - Someone forgot to tell recent J.R. Tucker graduate Jay Wyss and current Tiger runner Michael Chapa that you are not suppose to run fast in August. Well somehow they did not get the memo as Chapa and Wyss blazed a 1-2 finish at the Innsbrook Run 5K with times of 15:14 and 15:25.

Chapa and Wyss, along with former New Kent runner Guy Alton, went through the first mile in a gingerly pace of 5:05. Chapa and Wyss then proceeded to pick up the pace dramatically for the last two miles as they dropped Alton and ran stride for stride for much of the remainder of the race. The pair hit two miles well under 10 minutes and with a half mile to go, Chapa was able to break away from Wyss to take a 11 second victory over his former teammate in a time of 15:14.

Chapa, who earned All-State honors in cross country as well as in indoors (1600 meters) and outdoors (3200 meters), will likely be one of the favorites to win the AAA state cross country crown this fall. Wyss, who will be headed to Christopher Newport University in the fall, will surely make an instant impact on his new squad.
