W&M Invite: Dewey outduels Patterson, Robbins remains unbeaten

WILLIAMSBURG, VA -- The William & Mary Invitational was suppose to be a preview showing of the AAA state girls' race with the state's top three ranked runners in the state: #1 ranked Aurora Scott of Western Branch, #2 ranked Melissa Dewey of Hayfield, #3 ranked Amanda Patterson of Midlothian. However, Scott was a no show leaving a two way battle between Dewey and Patterson to decide to the top harrier on the day. Traditionally held on Eastern State Hospital's 3.05 mile course, this year's William & Mary Invite was once again held on a shortened course of 2.85 miles.

In the girls "A" race, Dewey and Patterson set a brisk early pace along with St. Catherine's Katie Doswell. However, Dewey proved to be the only runner in the field that could sustain the hard pace as she broke away from Patterson to win by a 19 second margin in a time of 16:49. Patterson, last year's race winner, would hold onto second with a team of 17:08. Patterson was nearly caught at the finish by a hard charging Tasmin Fanning of Western Albemarle, who was clocked at the same time of 17:08 for third. Doswell, one of the early pacesetters, finished fourth in a time of 17:28.

In the girls' team scores, AA #1 ranked Western Albemarle was able to come away with the victory in a strong field with a team total of 128 points. Led by Fanning's third place finish, the Lady Warriors also received strong performances from Kelsey Stafford (16th, 18:30), Samantha Stafford (22nd, 18:41), Sarah Connette (41st, 19:12), and Carrie Ellwood (43rd, 19:14).

Finishing not far behind Western were the girls from Midlothian. Behind race runner-up Patterson, the Lady Trojans had a strong top five with Heather Mella (17th, 18:30), Christine Selander (36th, 19:07), Christine Blackburne (37th, 19:08), and Erink Stehle (44th, 19:16) as they accummulated a team total of 136. The Midlothian girls also ran without the services of top five runner M.C. Miller.

Unranked in last week's NTN Southeast Regional Rankings, the Western Albemarle and Midlothian could both see themselves ranked in the top 10 after defeating SE #9 ranked Eleanor Roosevelt, who finished third in the team scoring with 138 points.

Woodside senior Derrick Robbins continued to remain undefeated in competition this season at the William & Mary Invitational, but his win did not come easy. Robbins posted the fastest time of the day in winning the "A" boys' race in a time of 14:16, but his victory came down to the wire as he was just able to hold off Steven Duplinsky of Georgetown Prep (MD), who finished just a second behind at 14:17. The two runners had broken away from the field early on and had built a sizeable margin on the other runners.

Western Branch senior Adam Hutton was the first finisher after Robbins and Duplinsky as he took third place honors with a solid time of 14:44. Dipping under 15 minutes on the shortened course as well were Kellam's Mitch Cooper (5th, 14:50), Christiansburg's John Horst (6th, 14:52), Hayfield's Brian Fussell (8th, 14:54), and West Springfield's Mike Spooner (9th, 14:56).

The Colonial Forge boys walked away with the team title in the "A" boys' division with a team total of 115 points. Tony Nowotarski led the Eagles with a 12th place finishing time of 15:03. Rounding out Colonial Forge's top five were Nick Oltman (19th, 15:19), Arnoa Dieckmann (22nd, 15:22), Dan Leyh (24th, 15:24), and Joe Mihelic (38th, 15:44).

Fort Defiance finished third in the team standings and appear to be a team that is ready to defend their AA state crown this fall. With a team score of 153 points, the Indians put five runners under 16 minutes on the 2.85 mile course with Matt Bailey (23rd, 15:23), Derek Hizer (25th, 15:25), Daniel Stewart (27th, 15:29), Daniel Alonso (31st, 15:35), and Robby Corbett (47th, 15:53).
