Hokie top runners took 1-2 in the women's race and were 2-3 in the men's race
BANNER ELK, N.C. - Virginia Tech senior Jessica Morris (Coatesville, Pa.) captured her first collegiate meet win and led the Hokie women to their second victory of the season at the Bobcat Invitational on Saturday.
Morris took first place in the 29 runner field with a time of 18:14. Freshman Jessica Fanning (Charlottesville, Va.) also recorded an 18:14 time but finished second in the race.
Tech then claimed the fifth through ninth places in the women's race. Sophomore Jenn Dietz (Springfield, Va.) had a fifth place time of 18:41, sophomore Samantha Ference (Clifton, Va.) took sixth with her time of 18:47 and junior Holly Hunter was seventh with 18:56. Junior Katie Danyko (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and freshman Jessica Erickson (Herndon, Va.) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Seniors Michael Lawson (Foster, R.I.) and David Atkiss (Hatfield, Pa.) led Tech's men's squad in the 8k race with a 2-3 finish. Lawson had a time of 18:14 for a second place showing while Atkiss finished one second behind Lawson for third place.
Hokies then took the fifth through ninth places in the race. Sophomore Christian Barlow (Springfield, Pa.) took fifth place with a time of 18:27. Freshmen Rider Clauss (Madison, Wisc.), Zach Thomas (Sewickley, Pa.) and Billy Berlin (Midlothian, Va.) were sixth, seventh and eighth while sophomore Mike D'Amato (Midlothian, Va.) claimed ninth place.
Tech's cross country teams claimed its second victories of the season. The Hokie women won the team scoring with 21 points while the men won with 23 points. Lees-McRae College, the host of school of the invite, took second place in the men's team scoring while the women finished in third place. Appalachian State's women grabbed second place and their men finished third.
"It was a nice meet and both teams ran well as a pack," stated head cross country coach Ben Thomas. "We are looking forward to the next couple of competitive meets heading in the ACC and NCAA Regional Championships."
The Hokies next host the VT Invitational college and high school races on Saturday, October 9 at the Tech cross country course. The collegiate races open the invitational at 9 a.m. The high school junior varsity races start at 11 a.m. while the varsity races begin at noon.
