VA Outdoor Weekend #2: Blacksburg girls US #1 12:02 DMR

A decent start to the outdoor season in Virginia this past weekend with some notable performances being recorded on Saturday as the rain cleared up and temperatures were not too cold. Top performances included a US #1 12:02 DMR by the Blacksburg girls (photo right by Paula Stevens) at the Battlefield Relays, who hold set the state record last year in 11:57. Chris Dobbins of Christiansburg was one of several state best performances from Saturday's Knights Track Classic in Salem, Virginia. Dobbins, an indoor state runner-up in the 55 meter hurdles, clocked a personal best time of 14.57 in the finals of the 110 meter hurdles on Saturday. Other state leading performances in the meet included Philip Morris of Glenvar in the high jump (6'8"), and Cody Bingham of Liberty Christian in the pole vault (14'8"). In his last competition of the indoor season, Atlee junior Marques Atkinson was doing every event possible as a national runner-up in the pentathlon at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships. Atkinson's versatility was on display again in the first meet of the outdoor season at the Manchester Relays as he took first place individually in the high jump (6'4") and 300 meter hurdles (41.27) along with anchoring the winning Atlee sprint medley relay (800 meter leg) and leaping to a third place mark in the long jump. Battlefield Relays

Meet Summary: Blacksburg took members of their national champion boys 4xmile relay and state record girls distance medley relay up to Haymarket for the Battlefield Relays to load up their distance medley relays. The Blacksburg girls featuring the Stevens twins, ran a US #1 time of 12:02.77. Last spring at the Nike Outdoor Nationals, the Blacksburg girls set the Virginia high school state record with a time of 11:57. Their male counterparts ran a US #6 time of 10:26.63.

 

The Oakton girls won a total of four relay events in the 800 sprint medley, 4x1600 meter relay, 4x800 meter relay, and 4x100 meter relay to showcase a wide range of strong areas for their team. Their team also won two combined marks in the relay format for the field events led by a state leading mark of 18'7" from soccer star Alex Straton in the long jump. Meghan Jean-Baptiste in the triple jump (35'8.75") and Jennifer Markin in the pole vault (9'6") also had top individual marks for Oakton.

 

Forest Park boys clocked the fastest 4x200 meter relay in Virginia this year besting the top performances from the indoor season with their time of 1:30.92. Their relay was comprised of Kwame Boateng, Drew Belk, Dominique Johnson, and Jonathan Holley.

 

Fauquier's Kyle Fortney launched a 12 foot PR in the discus throw with a mark of 162'5", which ranks him second in the state currently. The senior Fortney finished fourth at last year's AAA State Championships in the discus and recently committed to the US Naval Academy.

 

Duke University women's soccer recruit Alex Straton of Oakton leaped to a significant one foot PR in the long jump at the Battlefield Relays with her state leading mark of 18'7. Straton earned All-State honors with her sixth place finish indoors in the event. Blacksburg coach James DeMarco brought his top distance runners including the Stevens twins and George Carter to run the DMR at Battlefield High School, which produced national caliber times of US #1 12:02.77 for the girls and US #6 10:26.63 for the boys. Group AAA 1000 meter state champ Ariel Karabinus anchored Osbourn Park to two relay victories at the Legard/Scuderi Relays with solid 800 splits of 2:19 in the 4x800 and 2:21 in the sprint medley relay as the Lady Jackets time in the SMR of 4:12.25 is the state's best and ranks them well nationally.
