COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman Jessica Fanning, Virginia Tech\'s first
All-ACC cross country runner, led the women\'s team to a seventh place
finish in its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference Cross Country
Championships hosted by the University of Maryland today. The Hokie
men finished ninth out of the 11 conference teams with 249 points.
\"The highlight of the day is that our true freshman, Jessica Fanning,
was named All-ACC on the women\'s side,\" stated Tech\'s director of
track & field and cross country Dave Cianelli.
Fanning (Charlottesville, Va.) had a time of 22:38.9 for 13th place
out of the 84 runner-field in the six kilometer women\'s conference
championship race. Fanning was the only Hokie to place in the top-25
in both races. Also this is her fourth race to finish as Tech\'s top
runner.
For the first time this season, freshman Natalie Sherbak (Virginia
Beach, Va.) was Tech\'s second finisher in a race. She finished in
30th place with a time of 23:13.5 in just her second meet competing
for the Hokies. Senior Jessica Morris (Coatesville, Pa.) came in
third for the Hokies. Morris clocked 23:49.4 for a 39th place finish.
Duke won their first-ever ACC Cross Country Championships with 29
points. The Blue Devils had five finishers in the top-ten. Sally
Meyerhoff clinched the individual title in 21:34.2.
In the men\'s race, senior Dave Atkiss (Hatfield, Pa.) was the first
Hokie to cross the finish line. He had a 35th place time of 26:12.5
out of 84 runners on the eight kilometer course. This is Atkiss\'
third race out of the five he has run this season to be Tech\'s top
finisher.
Three freshman claimed Tech\'s second, third and fourth finishers in
the conference championship race. Rider Clauss (Madison, Wisc.) took
49th place in 26:37.2, Billy Berlin (Midlothian, Va.) was the 53rd in
26:44.9 and Andrew Montgomery (Falls Church, Va.) finished in 26:48.6
for 54th place.
N.C. State won their 13th men\'s team title with 47 points. The
Wolfpack men had one point less than second place finisher Florida
State. The Seminole men garnered 48 points and their first
individual champion, Andrew Lemoncello. Lemoncello easily won the
men\'s race in 24:29.6.
The Hokies have one week off from competition to prepare for the NCAA
Southeast Regional Championships on Saturday, Nov. 13 hosted by East
Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. At regionals, division I
squads will be competing for team and individual berths to the NCAA
Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. on Monday, Nov. 22.
