Williams Shatters School Record to Pace Keydets at BSC Championships

CHARLESTON, S.C. – In the final Big South Championship outing of her career, senior Chandale Williams shattered the VMI record in the 400-meter dash to lead the Keydet women's track and field team on the final day of the 2010 Big South Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C.

A day after just edging under the previous school record by posting a 56.93 clocking, Williams ran under 56 seconds for the first time to set the new mark. In fact, the senior ran well under 56 seconds, as she crossed the line in 55.67 to finish fifth overall. It equaled her best performance ever, finish-wise, at an outdoor conference meet, as she also placed fifth at last year's outdoor Championships. Finally, the effort was an ECAC qualifying time.

“I'm very proud of all the athletes this weekend,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Between our two teams, we posted over 70 seasonal or lifetime bests against some great competition. For Chandale Williams to end her Big South career with that performance was outstanding, and the positive attitude Lindsey Carty showed in coming back to run the 5K should be commended as well.”

All told, the Keydet team finished in ninth place overall. VMI's 16 points placed them behind eighth-place UNC Asheville, who had 37 markers, 16 of those by sprinter Natalie Pearson. Gardner-Webb was seventh with 39 points, while Liberty won the meet by reaching 245.5 on the scoresheet. Coastal Carolina was second (191), Charleston Southern third (90), and Winthrop (73), High Point (69) and Radford (56.5) rounded out the team standings.

The Keydets also scored in the 4X100-meter relay, as the team finished in sixth in that race. Zipporah McCann, Jennifer Sing, Danielle Dove and Williams crossed the line in 50.59 seconds to earn the result. Hannah Granger rounded out the list of Keydets who notched points, as the junior finished eighth in the 5,000-meters by clocking in at 18:38.77.

Other notable performances included Carty, who came back after running the 10,000-meters Thursday to finish 13th in Saturday's 5K in 19:34.25.

VMI track and field will return to action Thursday, as selected Keydets travel to the Penn Relays, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Pa.
