VANCOUVER, WA - All-American freshman Christo Landry (Falls Church, VA) and interim women's track and field head coach Kathy Newberry both qualified for the World Cross Country Championships this weekend by racing well at the USA Cross Country Championships, held in Vancouver, WA and sanctioned by USA Track and Field. By finishing among the top-six in their respective races, Landry and Newberry will both compete at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Saint Galmier, France March 19-20.

Landry, who finished 38th at the NCAA Cross Country Championship in November for All-America honors in his rookie season, raced in the Junior Men's 8,000m and clocked a 25:33.2 for fourth place. Also earning All-Southeast and All-CAA honors in cross country in 2004, Landry has already had a fine track campaign after qualifying for the IC4A Indoor Championships in his debut in the 5,000m, clocking a 14:26.28.

Fellow freshman Dave Mock (Johnstown, PA), an All-East competitor at the 2004 IC4A Cross Country Championship, also competed in the race and had a strong showing. Timing a 25:59.8 for 8,000m, Mock claimed eighth place, just two spots shy of qualifying for the World Championships.

Newberry, a proven national-level performer in her post-collegiate career, competed in the Women's Open 8,000m and clocked a 28:01.2 to claim fourth in the race. She will compete at her second consecutive World Cross Country Championship after finishing 25th, as the second-highest American, in 2004. Ranked 10th nationally in the 10,000m to end 2004, Newberry qualified for the finals of both the 5,000m and 10,000m at the 2004 Olympic Trials.
