Times misleading, performances are not at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA -- While the Virginia Tech Invitational was run at an odd distance of 4600 meters to make the times sound misleadingly fast, the performances were far from misleading as some of the state's best were victorious in Blacksburg. Rockbridge's John Crews blew away the boys' field with a time of 14:24 as second place finisher was teammate Will Williams (15:05), who overtook West Springfield's Jeff Day late (15:14) in the race for runner-up honors. The duo of Crews and Williams helped lead Rockbridge to the team title (65 pts) with West Springfield taking second (74 pts). Jennifer Boyd of Hickory won the girls' race with a swift time of 17:42 as she pulled away from Joanna Rodgers of Robinson (3rd, 17:57) in the last half portion of the race. Western Albemarle's Jessica Fanning closed well to finish second to Boyd at 17:53 as she lead her team to a big victory over Robinson (37-51) to help validate their new #1 ranking in the state.
