Both Cross Country Teams Tabbed Third in BSC Preseason Poll

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Both the VMI men's and women's cross country teams have been voted third in their respective preseason polls, according to information released by the conference Thursday.

The Keydet men were voted third with 79 points, 14 points ahead of fourth-place Coastal Carolina. UNC Asheville was fifth (59 pts.), Winthrop placed sixth (54 pts.) and Gardner-Webb placed seventh in the conference's preseason rankings, on the strength of 35 points. Charleston Southern (32 pts.), Radford (27 pts.) and Presbyterian College (11 pts.) rounded out the voting, while Liberty captured all 10 first-place votes to take the poll's top spot, and High Point earned each second-place vote (90 pts.) to grab the second position.

The VMI men, led by Ermin Mujezinovic and Felix Kitur, come off an up-and-down year. After winning the Big South Preview meet, on the strength of posting five harriers in the top 12, the Keydets wound up with a fourth-place finish at the Big South Championships just a handful of weeks later. Nearly everyone returns, however, as Andrey Dmitriev, Ian McGinn and Chris Wunsch join Mujezinovic and Kitur to form a team filled with potential.

The Big South Women's Cross Country voting was led by Liberty, who grabbed seven of 10 first-place votes and 97 overall points. Coastal Carolina (85 pts., two first-place votes) edged the third-place Keydets (83 pts., one first-place vote), thanks to multiple voters picking the Keydets to finish fourth or fifth. High Point was fourth (74 pts.), followed by Winthrop (58 pts.) and UNC Asheville (50 pts.). The poll's final four were Radford (35 pts.), Gardner-Webb (33 pts.), Charleston Southern (20 pts.) and Presbyterian College (14 pts.).

The Keydet women enjoyed the best year in program history in 2009, and come into this year looking for even better results. VMI swept the conference awards last season, with Hannah Granger claiming the Big South title, Jenna Moye winning Freshman of the Year honors and Coach Paul Spangler earning the Big South Coach of the Year award. Freshman recruits Tammy Cheung, Hannah Best and Rebecca Sweeney, along with returners Leah Schubel, Lindsey Carty and Corinne Lariviere, join Granger and Moye to comprise the deepest and most talented team VMI has ever had.

The VMI cross country teams will begin their 2010 season on Friday, Sept. 3, as the program hosts the VMI XC Relays at Lexington's Virginia Horse Center. The meet gets underway at 4 p.m., and admission is free.
