Keydets Impress With Third-Place Finish at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The VMI men's cross country team, paced by a sixth-place finish from Felix Kitur, finished third at the Charlotte Invitational, hosted by Charlotte at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, N.C. The third-place team result was ahead of the regionally ranked hosts, who placed 15th in last week's USTFCCCA poll.

Kitur led the Keydets by finishing sixth on the 8K course, completing his season debut in a time of 25:02. Ermin Mujezinovic was ninth among the 206 finishing competitors, clocking in at 25:08.

“Going in, I thought finishing in the top five would have been a solid result,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler. “To finish in the top three, and to beat a ranked team (Charlotte) and a list of quality programs that includes Clemson, that's a very good finish for our program.”

The team standings saw Wake Forest claim the team title with 38 points, finishing 16 markers ahead of Virginia Tech. The Keydets were third (121 pts.), just ahead of Clemson (123 pts.) and Charlotte (150 pts.).

The Keydet results continued with Ian McGinn, who placed 41st in a time of 26:08, and two freshmen finished just one second behind him, as Cabell Willis (26:09) and Jordan White (26:09) finished 44th and 45th respectively, crossing the line in a virtual tie. Junior Marshall Dalessandro was 49th (26:15), and Andy Eddleton was 66th with a time of 26:42. Jason Thorpe (78th/26:55), Hayden Hodges (88th/27:12) and Frank Van Valkenburg (118th/28:00) were also in action on Friday afternoon.

VMI cross country will return to action Friday, Oct. 15 as the Keydets travel to Boone, N.C. to take part in the Appalachian State Invitational.
