Cross Country Competes at Blue Ridge Open

BOONE, N.C. – The VMI women's cross country team finished seventh at Friday's Blue Ridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.

Hannah Granger, who will bid for her second straight Big South title in two weeks, led VMI Friday with a 14th-place finish. She completed the 5K distance in 18:14, with Tammy Cheung finishing 24th in a 32 second personal best (18:26) and Rebecca Sweeney 54th in 18:59.

“This wasn't our best race of the year, but we did have some bright spots,” said VMI head coach Paul Spangler. “Hannah and Tammy both ran well, with Tammy putting up that impressive personal best, and Dalton Kuhar really stepped up as well. High Point really served notice today that the Big South race will be a four-team battle for the title, not just a three-team contest.”

Leah Schubel continued the VMI results, finishing 89th in 19:24, while Kuhar was 90th in 19:25. Corinne Lariviere (92nd/19:26), Molly Western (103rd/19:36), Lindsey Carty (128th/20:07), Katie Purpura (133rd/20:15) and Nicole Augins (134th/20:19) rounded out the Keydet competitors in the team's final tune-up for the Big South Championships.

The team standings saw High Point (198 pts.) finish just ahead of VMI (207), and Appalachian State earn the fifth-place result (194 pts.). Duke earned the team title (23 pts.), with Virginia Tech (63) placing second and beating Mississippi State (127). Kentucky was fourth with 191 points.

“We did not run Jenna Moye, last year's Big South Freshman of the Year,” said Coach Spangler. “If we had, we very well may have finished fourth, ahead of Kentucky and Appalachian State. Regardless, this was a good tune-up”

VMI cross country will return to action Saturday, Oct. 30 as the Keydets travel to Blacksburg, Va. to take part in the Big South Championships, hosted by Radford University.
