IC4A Qualifiers, Mujezinovic Lead T&F at Season Opener

BOSTON, Mass. – Ademola Titcombe and Dennis James qualified for the IC4A Championships, while Ermin Mujezinovic won the mile to lead the VMI men's track and field team Saturday at the squad's season opener, held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Field Center in Boston, Mass.

Titcombe finished second in his trademark event, the triple jump. The junior cleared 14.32 meters (46'11 ¾”) to assure himself of a return to Boston in March for the IC4A meet, and he will be joined there by Dennis James. James got over the high jump bar at a lifetime best of 2.08 meters (6'9 3'4”), and earned a runner-up finish as well.

“I'm pleased with the effort from the men's team at this meet,” said VMI head coach Darrin Webb. “Our young athletes did a great job, competing in a big city at a very well-known facility, and the two IC4A qualifiers and Ermin all competed very, very well. Finally, our multi competitors were what really stuck out to me. They all had lifetime bests in multiple events, that won't in all cases be noticed in their finish. They were, however, strong for multi athletes. Coach Brickner has done a great job preparing that crew, and they've worked very hard. Each of our athletes, and our entire staff, has continued to work throughout cross country and our fall practices, which is very exciting for me.”

Mujezinovic went to the front of the fast section of the mile early on, but then dropped back for approximately 1.5 laps. He ran as low as fourth before surging to the front with two laps to go, and going on to post a time of 4:19.05. Jason Thorpe made a last lap pass to pick up a third-place finish in that event, clocking in at 4:25.94, while Andy Eddleton (12th/4:30.08) was also in action.

Early in the event, Titcombe ran the second-fastest time in the preliminaries of the 55-meter dash (6.55), but did not compete in the event finals. When he did take part in the triple jump, he was joined by Terrence Green, who came home seventh (13.71 M/44'11 ¾”).

The Keydets sent five runners to the track in the 5K, while Cabell Willis being the top finisher (15th/15:35.12), and sent others out for the 3,000-meter run. They included Andrey Dmitriev, who posted a 8:35.01 time for a second-place finish in his collegiate track debut. Mujezinovic returned to run 8:51.77, good enough for 11th place, while Hayden Hodges was 20th in his collegiate debut.

Michael Munson posted a personal-best in the 55-meter hurdles (8.15), while Antonio Wood was 10th in the long jump at 6.47 meters (21'2 ¾”).

VMI track and field will return to action January 28, competing at the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va.
