Webb parts the wind to a 15:03!

THE PLAINS, VA -- While the fierce cold and wind at the AAA State Meet affected many of the runners who weren't use to competing in such conditions, South Lakes senior Alan Webb simply parted the wind as he ran a sizzling 15:03 to break his own course record he set last year.

Shooting out like a cannonball, Webb hit the mile mark in 4:31 and 2 mile mark in 9:22 as held an enormous lead on the competition at that point. Webb then fought through the wind for an amazing time fo 15:03 on the challenging and hilly Great Meadow 5K course.

The Midlothian boys proved they are in fact the best team in the state as they destroyed the field winning by a wide margin of 52 points. Led by the gutsy senior Austin Smith, who placed 8th in a time of 16:10 while running with a bad knee injury, Midlothian scored 88 points, which put them well ahead of runners up Lake Braddock who amounted 140 points.

Oakton senior Matt Maline ran an exceptional race to take second with a time of 15:32 to lead the Wildcats to a third place showing with 142 points.

The Lake Braddock girls had an amazing one week turn-a-round. After just barely making it to the state meet as the finished 4th in the Northern Region Meet last weekend, the Lady Bruins won the state meet this weekend. Such a feat is unheard of. However, the Lake Braddock girls placed 3 girls in the top 20 to finish with a total score of 91 points. Taking second place was Northern Region rival James Robinson with 125 points.

Compared to the boys, the race for the girls' individual title was a close one. For the first 2.5 miles there was many lead changes. Lake Braddock sophomore Kelly Swain first took the lead after the mile mark, then at 1.5 miles Thomas Jefferson (Governor's School) senior Jeannie Addison was the one setting the pace. Hitting the 2 mile at 12:00, C.D. Hylton's Jemissa Hess had taken the lead. The leap frog game had to end sometime as Oakton's Keira Carlstrom made a move with less than a half mile to go to take the lead for good and go onto to victory in a time of 18:32.
