It was a good day to be a Robinson Ram at the 2001 Carolyn Legard Relays. The boys and girls team titles were both won by Robinson with the girls winning over Jefferson with 59.5 points and the boys winning with 70 points over Centreville.
The 2001 Manchester Relays was the beginning of what looks to be a promising year for the track teams and athletes in the Central Virginia area, in particular the AAA Central Region.
The 2001 Gar-Field Invitational held March 31 at Gar-Field HS in Dale City had some exceptional performances. Ian Lansdowne of Fauquier had a great day as he was winner in the 200m dash (22.92) and 400m dash (50.59) as well as in the 300m hurdles (41.32).
At the 2001 Saxon Track Classic at Langley HS in McLean, Virginia, John Handley HS junior Bobby Lockhart ran a personal best 3200m time of 9:06 where he ran even 1600m splits (4:33-4:33).
The 2001 Turner Ashby Relays was a meet where the team hosting the meet, Turner Ashby HS performed well on the home track and in particular, their girls distance squad. The Turner Ashby girls won all of the distance running related events.
The 2001 Brian Watkins I-95 Track Classic was an excellent meet.
The 2001 Liberty Invitational held at Liberty University in Lynchburg showcased some of the best teams and athletes in the central and western Virginia area.
Last season, the Phoebus High School boys and girls track teams each placed fourth in the Peninsula District. If their opening meet was any indication, however, the Phantoms will finish much higher this season.
A small meet held at Norfolk Academy with Cox and Menchville the only 2 high schools competing, there were some notable performances.
Lake Braddock became only the second team to ever win both the girls and boys indoor titles at the same meet and Alan Webb of South Lakes set a national high school record in the 1,000 meter run to highlight the AAA state indoor championships.
At this year's Group AA State Indoor Track Meet, if you won an event and didn't set a new meet record, people might ask what happened? The reason why they might ask that is that 8 boys' and 10 girls' Group AA State Indoor Track Meet records were broken.
The AAA state championships begin today and continue through tomorrow at the GMU Fieldhouse with wide open battles expected on both the boys and girls sides for the team titles.
The 2001 AA Indoor State Meet should be one of the most exciting in past years. While the sprint and jump events are lacking some of their stars from outdoors, the distance events will be very competitive.
This should be an exciting weekend for high school track in Virginia as the 2001 AAA Indoor Track State Meet is being held at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA this weekend on March 2nd and 3rd.
