Thank God for Dan Ward and his crew for stepping up to the plate and hosting the Virginia Tech High School Invitational this weekend as the performances showed that the future of this meet would be in the best interest of the state of Virginia and the U.S. high school track and field world to remain in existence. The biggest news out of the meet was Bethel senior Francena McCorory setting a new national record in the 300 meter dash as she clocked an all out effort performance of 36.59 in the event. The meet also included nine US #1 performances at the Rector Fieldhouse 200 meter banked indoor track including five Virginians in McCorory\'s 300, Catherine White of Northside in the 3200 meter run (10:39.66), Charles Clark of Bayside in the 300 meter dash (34.25), and Ashley Gatling of Deep Creek in the high jump (5\'9\"). Many other national elite and state leaderboard performances were performed by Virginians as well as athletes from Maryland and North Carolina. With Fork Union being shut out from competing at this past weekend\'s Virginia Tech Invitational due to new enforcement of sanctioning rules, several Fork Union athletes went to Liberty University to compete in their college meet. While Axel Mostrag could have posted a US #1 in the 1000 meter run at Virginia Tech most likely after posting a 2:33 on Fork Union\'s 160 meter unbanked track earlier in the season, he could take satisfaction at Liberty on Saturday in running the nation\'s fastest time this year so far in the 800 meter run with a second place finish 1:54.40. The Fork Union boys also put together an impressive DMR including Mostrag to finish fourth among the college teams with a final time of 10:34.44.

Under new meet management this year, the Virginia Tech Invitational looks to be yet another showcase of state\'s top athletes and relays as they get the opportunity to compete on not only the fastest indoor track in the state, but as well as one of the best in the nation. Southern Track Classic meet director Dan Ward takes over the reigns this year as former meet director Howard Nippert moved on to a position at Fork Union from Virginia Tech. The goal was to limit the meet to 90 teams and 1800 athletes, but with a meet of this caliber it is hard to say no to the many desperate teams, coaches, and athletes wishing to gain entry. Outside all of the hoopla and controversy that has surrounded the hosting of this year\'s meet, one can be guaranteed to see the best performances thus far this season the next two days at Rector Fieldhouse\'s 200 meter banked indoor track facility in Blacksburg, Virginia.

These rankings were calculated by scoring the elite performances rankings list 8-deep. 1st place received 8 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 8th place. Rounding out the top five were Bethel (46 pts), Menchville (34 pts), Blacksburg (30 pts), Salem of Virginia Beach (29 pts), and Buffalo Gap (24 pts).

Rounding out the top five were Fork Union (37 pts), Huguenot (27 pts), Phoebus (25 pts), Deep Creek (24 pts), and E.C. Glass (24 pts).

Please note that quite a few teams entered more than one athlete illegally (did not meet standard for 2 athletes). These excess entries were scratched and due to the number of teams, the teams were not notified, so they should check the performance list carefully. After becoming the first Virginian girl this season to dip under three minutes in the 1000 meter at last Friday\'s opening meet for St. Christopher\'s brand new 200 meter indoor track facility in Richmond, St. Catherine\'s senior Katie Doswell ventured north to the fast New York Armory banked track to compete in the high school girls invitational mile at the New Balance Games. Doswell ended up finishing runner-up with a time of 4:57.68 for a full mile. Doswell may have earned an invitation to the Milrose Mile with her race performance this past weekend. Doswell\'s performance is one of many that Milestat.com will cover from this weekend as MileStat.com was on-site at both the Keydet Invitational and East Coast Invitational, while also will be reporting on meets elsewhere.

The two day meet at the East Coast Invitational saw plenty of track and field action with three divisions of competition with the Virginia Invitational, Richmond Metro Invitational, and Richmond Metro divisions. The meet showcased many of the state\'s top tier athletes including the likes of Angela Jenkins, Kristen Wolfe, Christi Harsha, and Kieran Lofland.

The Keydet Invitational went away from its traditional meet format of years past with more individual events and teams than in years past. The result of the changes were a higher quality meet with strong depth in many events. Many new events set records that may survive the test of time, while other traditional events at the VMI were also broken as well.

The first annual Asics Invitational saw a meet filled with outstanding performances. In the final of two high school invitationals hosted at the Liberty University\'s Tolsma Track Center this season, the 200 meter track facility will definitely serve as a springboard for even greater performances for high schoolers in future years.

The Fork Union Invitational saw another solid meet in a long line of great events held at the Estes Athletic Center\'s 160 meter indoor track facility. While meets like the Montgomery County Invitational in Maryland and the Asics Invitational held at Liberty University\'s brand new 200 meter track took away some of the competition, this weekend probably needed a meet or two to ease the overcrowding that usually occurs at this popular meet. Nonetheless, many solid performances were found in a meet that probably had the \"just right\" size of teams present given the size of the facility.

In the art of pole vaulting, it\'s Atlee High vs. the Capital District . . . perhaps even the whole Central Region. Raiders don\'t have to join the Air Force to be a force in the air. At least on the boys side, Atlee goes three or four deep in an event where many schools struggle to enlist even one capable vaulter. Junior Cameron Sovick, who has sailed as high as 13-6, ranks third in an Atlee pecking order that features seniors Justin Varner and Jordan Cole.

In a featured MileStat.com interview, Western Albemarle senior Ashley Early has great expectations for her final year of high school track. A three-time Group AA state champion and three-time All-American, Early would like to better her two state records indoors (12-4) and outdoors (12-6.25) in the pole vault. As the state\'s top pole vaulter for the past two years, the sky is the limit for Virginia\'s All-American vaulter.

No suprise with the amount of competiton and quality of track found at the Freeman Center\'s Vince Brown Track for the CNU Showcase that many of the state\'s best season times were turned in at the two day event in Newport News. In all, 14 state best peformances were recorded at the meet.

If you could set up a booth and sell sprinters\' speed, junior Anthony Chesson would be the richest kid at Manchester High School. Since that\'s impossible, he\'ll settle for being the fastest. Gene Bowen has witnessed a lot of fleet feet come and go in his 20 years of coaching Lancers track, so when he says, \"Anthony\'s the fastest kid we\'ve ever had,\" you take notice. Chesson snapped Manchester\'s 100-meter record with a 10.94 as a freshman. With speed to burn, it\'s no wonder his nickname is \"Smoke.\"

Christopher Newport University will host its second high school invitational of the season this weekend with the CNU Showcase. The two day meet held Friday and Saturday, January 7th and 8th at the Freeman Center\'s Vince Brown Track will be the start of several competitive meets after winter break with the state\'s best athletes going head to head. This weekend\'s meet will feature three of the state\'s biggest stars in Michael Morrison, Francena McCorory, and Angela Jenkins.

Only a junior, Kristy Tobin of Great Bridge High School shows great promise to become one of the best distance runners ever to come out of Eastern Region. While Tobin has yet to win a state title, she is on the verge to emerge as a state champion caliber runner as shown with her continued progression since her freshmen year.

The finals of the 55 hurdles and the 55 sprint will be run following the 4 x 800 relay on Friday night, January 6,2006. The first running event on Saturday will be the 4 x 200 relays at 9 am. There will be no 30 minute break on Saturday, January 7, 2006. There will be coaches meeting at 3:15 PM on Friday, January 6, 2006 and again at 8 am on January 7,2006. These meetings will take place at the start line area of the 55.

The Virginia Tech invitational will be held at Rector Field House on January 27-28, 2006. There have been some changes in format. The meet will be a fully sanctioned NFHS event for the District of Columbia and the states of Virginia, North Carolina, West Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee, and Kentucky. No club or unattached athletes may be entered. The number of entries will be limited. There will be about ninety schools accepted plus some selected individuals athletes from sanctioned schools to insure the competitive integrity of the meet. Each athlete will be limited to three total events (including relays). Each school may enter one athlete and relay team per event. Entries will total around 1800 athletes.
