The Brooke Point girls squeaked out a two point win over the Rachel Butler-led Lee-Davis squad, while the Fork Union boys rolled to their second consecutive team title at the Dogwood Track Classic. Axel Mostrag of Fork Union set a meet record in thrilling 1600 meter battle with Alex Bowman of Hermitage in 4:13.42, while Brooke Point\'s April Sinkler (5\'8\" HJ\") tied the old high jump mark. Less than four inches separated Angela Jenkins of Buffalo Gap(19\'0.50\" LJ/39\'2\" TJ) from breaking two meet records in the long jump and triple jump held by Gar-Field great Sheena Johnson. Hermitage senior Queen Harrison posted two impressive times in her victories in the 300 meter hurdles (42.15) and 200 meter dash (24.65). The Dogwood Track Classic once again proved itself to the be biggest and deepest meet in the state of Virginia.

In the first annual XBC Charger Classic sponsored by Cassel\'s Awards, many outstanding performances were found at Chantilly High School. Chantilly distance star Brad Siragusa led the charge for the Chargers in winning both the 1600 (4:23.17) and 3200 (9:20.68) meter races in his home invite. Riverdale Baptist of Maryland\'s Kristyn Lawson dominated the sprints with two victories in the sprints (12.17 100/25.97 200). Lawson will be featured in the Southern Track Classic two Friday nights from now. Thomas Edison\'s Devan Clark helped lead his team to the title as he swept the throwing events (52\'5\" SP/161\'9\" Discus) yet again in another invite. Centreville sophomore and defending indoor long jump champion Brittni Finch took first place with ease in both the long jump (18\'8\") and triple jump (35\'10\"). Finch\'s Centreville girls were team runners-up to Northwest of Maryland and the Centreville boys were second place team finishers as well. Aimee Kodat of Westfield matched Clark\'s wins with the best marks in both the shot put (35\'7\") and discus throw (123\'6\") for the girls. Chantilly freshmen Lia DiValentin had a stellar double in posting a 11:06 to win the 3200 meter run as well as run away with the win in the freshmen 1600 meter run (5:19.86). Led by Charles Washingtons four individual victories in the 100 meter dash (10.9), 200 meter dash (22.0), long jump (21\'2.50\"), and triple jump (42\'2.50\") as well as anchoring the first place 4x400 meter relay, the John Handley boys ran away with the team title by over 50 points at the Apple Blossom Invitational. Meanwhile, Penn Relays discus champion Natalie Baird of Park View fresh off uncorking a 144\'3\" personal best throw in the discus at Penn, threw even farther at James Wood High School as she broke her own meet record with a 148\'10\" throw. The sophomore thrower also was an easy winner in the shot put at 40\'1\" to help Park View (73 pts) win the team title by 10 points over Colonial Forge (63 pts). Handley\'s Ayla Smith was honored as athlete of the meet along with Washington after winning three events in the triple jump (33\'6.75\"), 100 meter hurdles (15.3), and 300 meter hurdles (45.2). She also ran ancor leg for the third place 4x800 meter relay team and broke a new meet record in the 300 meter hurdles. More to come from Apple Blossom...

The lone bright spot for the Virginia boys on Saturday at Penn Relays was E.C. Glass senior Mike Zajac\'s victory in the discus throw with a mark of 178\'6\". Zajac defeated Jamaican national champion Sharif Small (175\'4\") for the Penn Relays hardware. While no Virginian boys qualified for the Championships of America finals in the 4x400 meter relay, Deep Creek posted the fastest time among Virginia schools at 3:18.41 as they were stuck in a loaded Jamaican heat. Meanwhile, Western Branch (3:18.98) and James Robinson (3:18.79) won their heats in dominating style with sub 3:20 clockings. It has been a while since Virginia has had three 4x400 meter relays with times under 3:20. Also Westfield and Huguenot posted respectable and nearly identical times in their heats with times of 3:21.03 (Westfield) and 3:21.04 (Huguenot) respectively. After the Midlothian girls were mauled on their opening leg in Thursday\'s DMR, but were still able to finish the race, the Deep Creek and Manchester boys encountered similar woes of misfortunte in Saturday\'s 4x100 meter relay finals. Both teams DNF\'d with Deep Creek in the Championships of America finals and Manchester in the small school finals. The bad news just got bleaker for Virginia with heavily favored Mike Morrison of Great Bridge, who some had thought would take down the meet record in the pole vault, was unable to successfully clear at his opening height. Booker T. Washington senior Marlon Woods, who boasts a personal best height of 6\'9\" in the high jump, cleared fours inches short of that height at Penn Relays at 6\'5\" to finish sixth overall.

Competing at Wanner Knights Invitational at Prospect High School in Illinois, Griff Graves ran the fastest time of the year so far among Virginians in the 3200 meter run with a 9:13.9 clocking to finish seventh in one of the nation\'s deepest 3200 meter races this spring. The race featured four Foot Locker finalists including Ryan Craven, who finished third at Foot Locker Nationals in December, which Graves finished ahead of at Prospect. Only a sophomore, the Abingdon star will be competing in a hot mile race at the Southern Track Classic on Friday, May 12th.

After leading for the majority for the girls\' 3000 meter run at the Penn Relays and finishing third in the event, Northside junior Catherine White kept up that front running capibility at the Salem High School hosted Cosmopolitan Invitational by setting two meet records in the 1600 and 3200 meter races with two impressive times of 4:54.16 in the 1600 meter run and 10:44.19 in the 3200 meter run. The meet also featured other several top athletes in the Roanoke Valley area.

Park View sophomore Natalie Baird joins Ashley Gatling as a Penn Relays champion as Park View sophomore Natalie Baird won the discus throw with a big personal best throw of 144\'3\". The Bethel girls took runner-up to Holmwood Tech of Jamaica in the 4x100 meter relay Championships of America finals with a swift 46.74 clocking. They also finished sixth in the 4x400 meter relay Championships of American finals with a time of 3:48.38. McCorory had the fastest leg at 52.6 on anchor. Kecoughtan finished eighth in 3:52.72. The Salem girls won the large school division finals of the 4x100 meter relay with a 47.00 clocking. Osbourn Park finished fifth in the small school division finals with a time of 49.19. The Deep Creek boys had the top 4x100 meter relay time of the day among Virginians and among Americans in a 42.09 clocking, which qualifies them into the Championships of America finals amidst five Jamaican squads with faster times in the qualifying rounds. Camden of New Jersey is the only other U.S. team with Deep Creek for Saturday\'s finals. Manchester (42.55) and I.C. Norcom (42.83) qualified for Saturday\'s small school finals, while Western Branch (42.69) will represent Virginia in the large school finals. The Herndon boys had the best boys relay performance so far of the meet as they finished third in the DMR with a time of 10:11.73 as Abe Daganchew opened with a 3:05 opening 1200 meter leg and Ermin Mujezinovic closed with a swift 4:13 1600 meter anchor. West Springfield junior Mike Spooner was the top VA finisher in the boys 3K with a time of 8:36.87 to take ninth with four separating the next three Virginians in Matt Kroetch of Oakton (13th, 8:46.87), Jason Witt of Midlothian (14th, 8:47.71), and Zac Edwards of Northside (18th, 8:50.07). Lake Braddock girls were seventh in the Championships of America finals in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 9:20 as Michelle Presley split a 2:16 for the Lady Bruins. James Robinson boys posted the fastest time among VA 4x800\'s at 7:59.99...the horror of having only one 4x800 meter relay team under eight minutes (and as barely under eight minutes) continues to plague the Old Dominion. WAY BACK WHEN I was a high schooler in 2003, we had a dozen 4x800\'s in the state under eight minutes...what has happened since then? Live results from the Penn Relays

At one count there were 91 teams and around 1800 athletes entered for this year\'s Dogwood Track Classic. Those numbers may or may not have risen since then, but regardless, when a meet gathers that many teams and athletes, there is bound to be a day of track and field filled with outstanding performances as should be the case this Saturday at the University of Virginia\'s Lannigan field in Charlottesville. The meet kicks off bright and early with the ever popular morning sections of the 3200 meter runs at 8:30 AM. Queen Harrison, Rachel Butler, Kathy Howard, Ashley Early, Christi Harsha, Ashton Bishop, and Rachel Rose highlight the girls entered the meet. While Brandon Caleb, Sean Holston, Axel Mostrag, Alex Bowman, and Rashad Kelso are the big names among the boys on Saturday.

Menchville junior Nicole Saunders had an impressive showing in the 400 meter hurdles at Penn Relays as she ran a US #1 time of 59.65 to win her section and finish second overall to Jamaica\'s Sherene Pinnock of Edwin Allen. Allen ran a meet record time of 56.09. Saunders did it the hard way as she was not in the fast section as beat some of the best in America in Krystal Cantey of New Jersey (1:00.05) and Ryan Krais of Pennsylvania (1:00.11). An excellent start for Virginia with the first high school running event of the meet. Ashley Gatling won the high jump competition in a tiebreaker with two other athletes at 5\'8.50\". The Lake Braddock girls ran a smoking time of 9:16 to qualify for the Championships of America finals in the 4x800 meter relay with nearly four legs all splitting under 9:20. Francena McCorory ran a 52.8 split as Bethel\'s third leg on their 3:46, which is the fourth fastest time overall. Bethel also posted a swift 47.07 in the 4x100 meter relay to qualify for the finals in that event as well. Three state best times recorded in three relay events proves that Penn Relays is the place to run fast. Virginia takes two of the top four in the 3K with Catherine White (3rd, 9:49) and Sarrah Hadiji (4th, 9:58) and Katie Doswell also finishes fourth in the mile (4:54). As the entries for the Southern Track Classic are coming to a close this weekend with the deadline coming up on Sunday, this year\'s edition of the meet looks to be one of the deepest meets ever. With 134 teams and over 650 athletes entered and vying to get their athletes and relays accepted into the meet, meet management has a tough job ahead of itself in cutting down to the elite finals only meet that the Southern Track Classic produces year in and year out with the state\'s best and sprinkle of national caliber athletes. The boys one mile run is shaping up to be the race of the meet with two of the top three finishers in the Arcadia mile coming in to compete. Colorado\'s Daniel Roberts (4:10 at Arcadia) and Tennessee\'s Rob Sorrell (3rd, 4:13 at Arcadia) will pair off once against along with some of Virginia\'s best milers in All-American Brad Siragusa (4:15 PR) of Chantilly and AAA state champion Alex Bowman of Hermitage (4:16 PR). Who else will be joining them and the rest of the Southern Track field on May 12th in Richmond?

The 112th annual Penn Relays gets underway this week with many of Virginia\'s best individual athletes and relays in attendance. One of the largest contingents of Virginians in recent years made the trek west to the Volunteer Outdoor Track Classic held at the University of Tennessee. Friday\'s portion of the meet had to deal with severe weather, but Saturday found clearer skies as the stormy weather had moved east to the weather encountered by many Virginians at meets on Saturday.

While several meets across the state had to succumb to the power of mother nature by cancelling or postponing due to inclement weather, the Allen Johnson Invitational hosted at Lake Braddock High School was able to avoid the brunt of the storm and complete the meet just in the nick of time. As the meet was about to conclude with only a couple occassions of steady rainfall during the day, a strong downpour came down in the final sections of the final event of the day in the boys 4x400 meter relay. Many outstanding performances were recorded throughout the day thanks to the graces and luck of fairer weather than first predicted.

Meet management was given high marks at the first annual Norview Invitational as while winds hampered performances, the heavy rainfall did not come to postpone or cancel the meet. A total of twelve teams competed in the first year event as Great Bridge took both team titles. Janet Brown led the way as performer of the meet as she won four field events.

Shortened significantly due to inclement weather, there were still noteworthy performances at the Deep Run Invitational in the portion of the meet that was able to be completed before it was called off.

The Virginia Tech track and field teams ended the Atlantic Coast Conference Championships in fine style Saturday afternoon at Ketner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University. The women\'s team finished fifth with 73.50 points, up from ninth last year at the outdoor championships, while the men took home a seventh-place finish with 58 points.

Virginia\'s Andrew Dumm led a 1-2-3 finish in the men\'s 5K, running a stunning 14:07, 22 seconds below his previous best mark, to lead a sweep of the medals and to help the Cavalier men finish fourth at the 2006 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC. Dumm\'s time not only qualified him for the Regional meet but also moved him into the No. 5 position all-time in Virginia history. Kevin McHale took home third in both the 800m and the 1500m runs as the men went 3-4-6 in the two-lapper while Andrew Jesien teamed with McHale to go 3-6, giving the Cavalier men 78 points in the five distance events, or 40% of the total points scored.

Virginia\'s Ryan Foster led a 1-3-5 finish in the men\'s 10K as the All-ACC and All-Regional performer won his first individual ACC title with a 30:20.72 effort, helping Virginia to stand in third at the conclusion of the first day of competition at the ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Teammate Andrew Dumm earned All-ACC honors with his third-place finish, coming in at 30:29.11. Taylor Smith finished fifth overall at 31:18.88, as the Cavaliers were the only school to have more than two scorers in the event. On the women\'s side, Kara Scanlin finished fourth with a 36:04.97, just ahead of teammate Laura Hodges, who ran 36:13.53.

Virginia Tech senior Saskia Triesscheijn shattered nearly every record possible en route to claiming her first Atlantic Coast Conference title Saturday afternoon. Triesscheijn established a personal best, school record, ACC record and the top point total in the NCAA this season with 5,833 points in the heptathlon.

MileStat.com Athlete of the Week award for the week of April 9th through April 15th goes to Menchville\'s Nicole Saunders and Appomattox County\'s Rashad Kelso.

Menchville junior Nicole Saunders made quite an impression at the Peninsula Relays in posting one of the fastest times ever by a Virginian girl in the 300 meter hurdles with a 41.38 clocking. Only one athlete really comes to mind as having ran faster in the event. The Gar-Field great Sheena Johnson ran under 41 seconds in the event including the 40.94 Group AAA State Meet record. Recording the performance as a junior and in a mid-April invitational speaks loud volumes of the time for the Menchville star Saunders.

While quite a few schools were on spring break during this past week, a solid field of teams was assembled for the Appomattox Invitational held at Appomattox County High School. The boys 400 meter dash featured two of the state\'s best in Appomattox\'s own Rashad Kelso and E.C. Glass senior Carlton Phipps. Kelso, an All-American indoor in the 200 meter dash this past March, clocked a quite impressive 400 meter time of 47.57 to move himself well ahead in the state rankings, while Phillps moved into the number two position his second place finishing 48.44 clocking. Kelso\'s time ranks him #6 in the nation going into this weekend\'s meets across the country.

Due to lack of entries to make the meet count as a state qualifying meet, the George Mason University High School Invitational scheduled for April 15th is cancelled.

After improving upon her state meet record in the pole vault at last weekend\'s Gus Lacy Track Classic with a 12\'9\" clearance, only four days later Western Abemarle senior Ashley Early was high flying again as she successfully cleared a height of 12\'10\" in a home quad meet against Orange County, Louisa County, and Covenant in Crozet. It was debatable whether to call her 12\'9\" height at Gus Lacy an outdoor state record since the competition was held indoors due to inclement weather, but her performance this Wednesday leaves no room for dispute. The mark also qualifies her for USATF Junior Nationals.

MileStat.com creator Brandon Miles announced today plans to host a high-caliber post-season high school track meet to be held at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond, Virginia on Saturday, June 10th and Sunday, June 11th. The meet lies on the June weekend in between the Virginia public schools\' outdoor track state meets and the Nike Outdoor Nationals. Meet promoter and director Brandon Miles is hoping to gather many of Virginia\'s top track and field athletes for the post-season invitational as well as bring in talent outside of the state. The event called the MileStat.com Elite Track Gala will be a meet that serves several different purposes for high school track athletes and others.

Some of Virginia\'s best athletes ventured down to South Carolina to compete in the Taco Bell Classic and several Virginians came away with victories despite the tough competition and inclement stormy weather that hammered the East Coast this weekend. Mike Morrison, Francena McCorory, Charles Clark, and Catherine White all picked up big wins this weekend in the high caliber meet.

Three state leading performances and four meet records were set in the 2006 edition of the Gus Lacy Track Classic as the select size of the meet was able to push the meet along quickly and with a little luck, avoid any impediments from inclement weather. The sole indoor event that was taken indoors to the Estes Athletic Center in the pole vault saw fireworks in the form of Western Albemarle senior Ashley Early as the story of the meet was not witnessed by most of the meet spectators as she cleared a personal best height of 12\'9\" in the pole vault. A mark that should easily rank her well up on the early national leaderboard. Fork Union\'s Axel Mostrag, Prince Edward County\'s Deangelo Wilson, and E.C. Glass\' Mike Zajac also set new meet marks with Mostrag and Zajac also posting state bests.

While there will be no Percy Harvin at this year\'s AAA State Meet, it appears the state of Virginia has not waited long to find another dominating athlete from Tidewater Virginia after the performances from Phoebus senior Corey Vinston at the Norfolk State Relays. Vinston won four events on the day and all his winning times and marks were very impressive. He had close second place finishes as well in two field events behind national champion and All-American jumper Marlon Woods of Booker T. Washington.

Highlights from the CNU Captains Classic held April 7th and 8th at Christopher Newport University\'s Pomoco Stadium in Newport News. Great Bridge\'s Kristy Tobin and St. Catherine\'s Katie Doswell battle in epic battle, Great Bridge\'s Janet Brown dominating the field events, Matoaca\'s Mia Aghaji upsetting state champion Ashley Gatling of Deep Creek, Trevor Bray\'s 56\'1\" throw in the shot, and Kevin Nichols of Hickory clearing 6\'6\" to win the high jump over Douglas Walls of Petersburg (6\'5\") highlight some of the performances from the meet.

At the very competitive Texas Relays this past weekend, AAA state indoor long jump champion Brittni Finch launched a 19\'8.50\" mark in the long jump to win in her former homestate of Texas. Now a Virginian, Finch has the current top mark in the state for the long jump after her performance in Austin. Showing great consistency, the Centreville All-American sophomore had two other jumps over 19 feet at 19\'0.75\" and 19\'1.75\".

Fork Union\'s Gus Lacy Track Classic should be once again a meet of high level competition with many of the state\'s top track programs and athletes in attendance. The boys\' side is especially loaded with excellent teams including AAA state indoor team champion E.C. Glass boys, defending private school state team champion Fork Union boys, and AA state indoor team runners-up Appomattox County. Several All-American individuals comprise the field including the Fork Union duo of Axel Mostrag and Brandon Caleb, Appomattox County\'s Rashad Kelso, and E.C. Glass\' Mike Zajac.
