Plenty of great performances to recap from this weekend as Virginia Tech Invitational was a spring board meet for US #1\'s and US all-time performances, while the St. Christopher\'s Invite held its own as well in the first major invitational ever held at the private school\'s one year old 200 meter indoor track facility.

The first annual St. Christopher\'s Indoor Invitational in Richmond had nothing but rave reviews whether it was regards to the facility itself or how well the meet was run. The performances this past weekend certainly indicated that Richmond\'s newest indoor track facility will produce to many future great meets, times, and marks.
Despite being snubbed for the second year in a row in having an invitation extended to her for the Millrose Games high school mile, Northside senior Catherine White took advantage of the opportunity to race against some of the Millrose invitees this past Saturday at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games at the Reggie Lewis Center. White beat two of the Millrose invitees (Brittany Sheffey NY and Colleen Weatherbee MA) to finish fifth in an elite field of 14 athletes with an indoor personal best time of 4:55.38. Her US #5 performance in Boston was only two seconds off of her outdoor mile best of 4:53 in an All-American showing at Nike Outdoor Nationals.

Accepted high school entries for the first annual St. Christopher\'s Mid-Atlantic Track Clash to be held Saturday, February 3rd at St. Christopher\'s School in Richmond, Virginia. The events are one section only finals.
Last year\'s Virginia Tech High School Invitational saw a national record for 300 meters from Bethel VA\'s Francena McCorory as well as a slew of US #1 and US top 5 performances. The 2007 Virginia Tech Invite with meet director Dan Ward under the helm for the second year in a row as the coordinator of traditionally one of the nation\'s top high school invitational promises to be just as strong if not the best ever at Rector Fieldhouse.

The Fork Union boys showed a glimmer of the performances they are capable of on a fast track on Friday night at a quad meet hosted at St. Christopher\'s School in Richmond. Their top four distance runners each won a race with Axel Mostrag in the 3200 meter run, Szymon Rola in the 1600 meter run, Jamie Reichlen in the 1000 meter run, and Jeremy Haney in the 1000 meter run.
It was an attack of the sub 11 two milers from the Virginia girls this weekend with three runners dipping well under the 11 minutes this weekend. Homeschooled junior star Aurora Scott ran a US #1 time of 10:29.12 at the Asics Invitational in Lynchburg, while Deep Run senior Courtlin LaReau challenged her through a 5:12 first mile and held on for a US #3 time of 10:45.86. Incredibly both were newbies to the event indoors with this weekend being Scott\'s first indoor meet. Meanwhile, Chantilly sophomore Lia DiValentin clocked a US #5 time of 10:49.11 on Friday evening at UNC\'s Eastern Challenge.
Footlocker South champion Aurora Scott was competing in her first indoor meet ever, while Deep Run senior Courtlin LaReau was racing for the first time at 3200 meters on the track. The outcome was a US #1 from Scott and US #3 from LaReau proving talent can override inexperience.
The state of Virginia was well represented at the Eastern Challenge held at the University of North Carolina\'s Eddie Smith Fieldhouse in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. While conceding the sprint and hurdle events to North Carolina athletes, Virginians swept the distance events with winners and many top finishers in the 1000, 1600, and 3200 meter races for both and girls as well as the 4x800 meter relay. In field events action, Virginia had several meet champions beating some strong competition.
Not too many surprises at the East Coast Invitational as teams and individuals already established as some of the best in the Central Region did not disappoint with their performances this weekend at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. The Midlothian girls ruled the distance races and the Manchester boys dominated the sprints and relays. Meanwhile, the Matoaca pair of Shanneka Claiborne and Aramis Massenburg showed just why they are state leaders in their respective events.
West Springfield senior Mike Spooner found himself stuck in a strategic and kicker\'s race in the elite high school mile at New Balance Games halfway through the race. He decided to go for it and shoot to the lead on the back stretch of the banked 200 meter track found at the New York Armory with less than a half mile left in the race. However, Spooner\'s leading duties were short lived as he was over taken a pack of runners on the next lap. He was still able to hold onto a sixth place finish and run an indoor personal best time of 4:20.45 for a full mile (converts to a 4:18.85 1600 meter time).
Val\'s pole vault gals had exceptional showings at the Pole Vault Summit held in Reno, Nevada this past weekend. Val Osipenko is one of the best pole vault coaches in the state and works as a club coach to three of the state\'s best vaulters with Mills Godwin\'s Anne Marie Gordon, Westfield\'s Betsy Alter, and St. Catherine\'s Carrie Wortham. All three vaulters competed in the pole vault extravaganza held out west. Both Gordon and Alter were high school section winners at the Summit, while Alter and Wortham cleared personal bests of 11\'6\" and 10\'10\" respectively. State leader Gordon was not far off her 11\'9\" all-time best with a clearance of 11\'7\" to win section two.
Lap by lap photo breakdown with splits of Aurora Scott\'s US #1 10:29.12 3200 meter performance at the Asics Invitational held at Liberty University\'s Tolsma Track Center in Lynhburg, Virginia on Saturday, January 20th. Second place finisher Courtlin LaReau of Deep Run also posted a US #3 time of 10:45.86 in her debut at 3200 meters. Audio interview with Scott and video of the race to come soon!
Mills Godwin senior Anne Marie Gordon is in \"The Biggest Little City in the World\" in Reno, Nevada this weekend to compete in the Pole Vault Summit. The Summit gathers some of the nation\'s best high school, collegiate, and professional vaulters to compete in a festive and competitive event for the unique field event. Gordon is Virginia\'s best in the event by a foot and three inches with her 11\'9\" this best.
The East Coast Invitational continues to be one of the longest standing high school indoor invitationals in the state of Virginia as well as the country and continues to bring in some of the state\'s best talent. The first East Coast Invitational was held in 1960 and this year\'s meet will be the 48th annual. The meet use to be hosted inside the Richmond Coliseum on a wooden banked track before moving over to the Arthur Ashe Center in 1983. The 2007 edition of the East Coast Invitational will feature Shanneka Claiborne, Aramis Massenburg, Rachel Butler, and Anthony Chesson as some of the state\'s top athletes in the meet with the Manchester boys and Midlothian girls as the top teams attending.

This weekend\'s Asics Invitational will be hosted at Liberty University\'s Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg and will be hosted over two days on Friday and Saturday. West Springfield senior Mike Spooner is set to compete in a high caliber field of some of the East Coast\'s best prep milers on Saturday at the 12th annual New Balance Games held at the Armory in New York City. Spooner ran 4:16 for 1600 meters and 4:17 for a full mile last spring as a junior. He is coming off a strong cross country season, which included a state championship and appearance at Footlocker Nationals in San Diego.

Revised (and hopefully final) performance list for the 2007 Virginia Tech Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday, January 26th and 27th at the Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg, Virginia. The entrants include a total of 18 current US top 5 performers.
Performance list for the 2007 Asics Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday, January 19th and 20th at Liberty University\'s Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Francena McCorory returned to the same track that she set the national high school record in the 300 meter dash at Virginia as a collegiate freshmen at Hampton University to break the American and World Junior Indoor Record in the event.
Performance list for the 2007 East Coast Invitational to be held Friday and Saturday, January 19th and 20th at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond, Virginia.
Sean Holston did it again at the Prince George County Sports and Learning Complex with his third US#1 performance in his third different event with a personal best 47.90 clocking in the 400 meter dash at Saturday\'s Montgomery Invitational in Landover, Maryland. Holston already owns the US#1 times for 300 (33.99) and 500 (1:03.94) meters as all three nation\'s best times were posted on the same track at Prince George. However, his national leading time was short lived as Chris Ward of Florida (47.42) and Curtis Bilbrew of Alabama (47.68) posted faster times on a much faster and banked track found at the University of Arkansas on Saturday. Axel Mostrag\'s 4:17.76 1600 meter time at the FUMA Invite has to be the best 1600 or mile performance in nation disregarding times based on the fact that Mostrag ran his time on the 160 meter unbanked track at the Estes Athletic Center. His time broke the meet record of 4:19.96 held by a former great high school, collegiate, and post-collegiate miler in Sencca Lassiter. More to come from Montgomery, Fork Union, and CNU.
Several of this past weekend\'s best performances in the state came from the 2007 FUMA Invitational at the Estes Athletic Center. Fork Union\'s Axel Mostrag breaking Seneca Lassiter\'s 1995 meet and facility record of 4:19.96 with one of the country\'s fastest times for 1600 meters at 4:17.76 obviously was the performance of the meet, but there were plenty of noteworthy performances on Saturday at FUMA. The meet featured four state leading performances including Mostrag\'s 4:17 1600.
Saturday at the CNU Showcase held at the Freeman Center in Newport News had three state leading performances and more importantly gave some early indications of what to expect from top teams, relays, and athletes this season. Two teams who looked sharp after the completion of the meet in the Eastern Region were the Bethel girls and Western Branch boys.
The rest of the country better not be sleeping on Fork Union senior Axel Mostrag again. Last year at Nike Indoor Nationals, Mostrag showed those on the national scene how talented of a middle distance runner he is by nearly bringing his team\'s distance medley relay far from behind for a national championship and finishing up as a national runner-up for 800 meters. After his performance in the 1600 meter run at the Fork Union Indoor Invitational, anyone would be foolish to make the same mistake again to overlook the Polish national.

The meet was off to a flying start on Friday in the first day of events at the Christopher Newport University High School Showcase in Newport News. There were three US top five performances recorded during the event and several state leading performances also posted.
Performance list for the 2007 CNU Showcase to be held Friday & Saturday, January 12th & 13th at Christopher Newport University\'s Freeman Center in Newport News, Virginia.
It will not be a packed house at the FUMA Invitational this year as some prior years with the track facility filled to max capacity, but it will be a quality house with room to breathe for some of the state\'s best athletes and teams that will be in attendance at the Estes Athletic Center on Saturday.
Performance list for the 2007 FUMA Invitational to be held Saturday, January 13th at Fork Union Military Academy\'s Estes Athletic Center in Fork Union, Virginia.
Performance list for the 2007 Montgomery Invitational to be held Saturday, January 13th at Prince George Sports and Learning Center in Landover, Maryland.
A large draw of Virginia athletes and teams will be competing at this weekend\'s Montgomery Invitational being hosted at the Prince George County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. For some team Northern Virginia teams, this will be their third consecutive weekend racing at the facility that also hosts the Nike Indoor Nationals on a yearly basis.

n 1984 Mike Byrnes, Jim Spier, and Tracy Sundlun started their National Scholastic Indoor Track and Field Championships. This became considered the high school national championships. It remained the \"high school national championship meet\" until 1999 when the split with the Metropolitan Athletic Congress caused a dual meet situation with the Nike Indoor Classic and the National Scholastic Championships thus ending a true national championship meet. In the years that the National Scholastic Championships were considered the national championships (1984 - 1998) Virginia Public Schools had 35 individual champions and 5 relays win championships.

They will also ask the board to establish an Athletics Task Force to study alternatives to the cuts. The Coalition to Save JMU Sports will also hold a rally outside of the Leeolou Alumni Center at 12:00 PM.

Week 4 of indoor track in Virginia included another US #1 performance from Sean Holston in the 300 meter dash with a 33.99 clocking at the Southern Maryland Mega Meet after posting a US #1 for 500 meters only week earlier. Other top performances included a personal best clearance from Anne Marie Gordon (pictured left) in the pole vault with a winning height of 11\'9\" at VMI\'s Keydet Invitational. Complete results, elites, and meet summaries are all posted from this past weekend\'s invites as well as video clips and photos (more to be added) from VMI.
Mills Godwin senior Anne Marie Gordon likes drama apparently. Not only is she in theatre at school, but seems to like to wait till the final attempt when clearing personal best heights in the pole vault. At last March\'s National Scholastic Indoor Championships, Gordon cleared 11\'7.25\" on her third attempt at the height. On Saturday at the Keydet Invitational, Gordon cleared a best height of 11\'9\" in similar dramatic fashion on her final attempt at the height.
On the same track that Sean Holston ran a US #1 500 meter dash time of 1:03.93 at last weekend\'s F.I.T. Invitational, he did it again with another national leading time in the event he considers his specialty in the 300 meter dash. At the Southern Maryland Mega Meet held at Prince George County\'s Sports and Learning Complex, the Robert E. Lee senior put his name on the national leaderboard once again on an unbanked track with a 33.99 clocking in the event.
T.C. Williams senior Samella Koroma continued to impress this season in the shot put as the state leader in the event improved upon her top mark at Friday night\'s UMES Coach O Invitational in Princess Anne, Maryland. Fresh off her win at the F.I.T. Invitational with a personal best throw in a MileStat.com Athlete of the Week performance, Koroma did it again with another state best throw at UMES with a winning mark of 41\'9.50\" on Friday evening.
Virginia was well represented on the first day of the Hispanic Games by the small delegation from two teams in the state in Herndon and St. Catherine\'s. High school senior girls still mulling over their college decisions should take a good look at MileStat.com\'s interview article with Case Western Reserve University (Cleveland, Ohio) junior Esther Erb, who has qualified for NCAA Division III National Championships in cross country twice and two times in track as well. Erb picked up her first collegiate All-American honors with a 34th place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships in November. Ironically, Erb was not a high profile high school runner at all. In fact, the 2004 graduate of Maggie Walker Governor\'s School in Richmond did not participate in the sport until her senior year of indoor track and ran only modest high school times of 2:28 for 800 meters and 3:12 for 1000 meters. MileStat.com\'s Brandon Miles interviews Erb about her transformation as a runner from high school into college and discusses the opportunities and competition level found at the Division III level for females.

Invitational at the Prince George County Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. Top performance of the week belonged to Sean Holston of Robert E. Lee as the defending AAA 300 meter state champion at F.I.T. ran a US #1 500 meter time of 1:03.93 in his debut in the event.
Robert E. Lee senior Sean Holston made a splashing debut in the 500 meter dash in Friday\'s F.I.T. Invitational held at Prince George Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Maryland. The defending 300 meter state champion posted the fastest time in the country this season and 17th fastest 500 meter time in U.S. prep history with a 1:03.93 clocking.
