  • Dorrell ready to mix it up with great mile field at Millrose

Photo by John Herzog Blacksburg senior Peter Dorrell heads to New York City on Friday to compete in the high school boys' mile in one of our country's most storied and prestigous events in the Millrose Games contested at Madison Square Garden. Dorrell is the first Virginian to be invited to the boys' mile race in five years as a 4:16 mile win at the Montgomery Invite on January 12th helped secure his spot in the field. The five-time state champion is riding high heading into this weekend after running the nation's fastest 3200 meter time of 9:06 and publicly stating where he will be running collegiately in a MileStat.com video interview last weekend at the Tech Invite. The College of William & Mary and Coach Alex Gibby are certainly excited to receive the verbal committment from one of Virginia's top distance runners, but having a Millrose mile champion would be even better. Check out Dorrell's chances and the top competitors that he will be facing in the Friday night race at MSG in MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush's preview article. The high school boys' mile with Dorrell is expected to be shown in a taped NBC show of the Millrose Games on Saturday. Check your local listings for the airtime of the meet. • Athlete Spotlight: Marlena Wesh

Bethel's Francena McCorory had dominated the state scene throughout her high school career with numerous state titles and two national records along the way. The question after her graduation was who would be next and the next in line appeared to be Woodside's Dominique Jordan. Despite distractions and conflicts, Jordan rose to the occassion in the indoor and outdoor state championships last year in her junior year with state titles indoors in the 300 and 500 meter dash as well as additional crowns added outdoors in the 200 and 400 meter dash. However, Jordan is no longer at Woodside High School nor living in Virginia as she has moved north to Connecticut prior to this track season and another void was left who would be our state's dominant female sprinter. Landstown junior Marlena Wesh (pictured left by John Herzog), a returning state runner-up in the 100 and 200 meter dashes as well as a AAU Junior Olympic national runner-up in the 200 this past August, appears to have answered the call as shown by her US #1 flat track 300 meter performance last Saturday at UNC of 39.63 to rank her 16th all-time in state history in the event. Along with teammate, best friend, and 2006 AAA 200 meter state champion Cierra McGee, Wesh is also helping to lead the Landstown girls in another state title run and bigger things on the national level with their relays. MileStat.com was able to catch up with Wesh for an interview.

  • St. Christopher's Mid-Atlantic Track Clash Preview

Photo by John Herzog Say it ain't so! An indoor track meet taking only four hours! That is what is scheduled for this Saturday's St. Christopher's Mid-Atlantic Track Clash with the one section only finals and no field events format. It will be a much needed break from the usual long weekend invites. Several national marks could be produced especially for a 200 meter flat track as was the case in last year's inaugrual event. Events and athletes to particularly look for in tomorrow's Clash... Grassfield's Curtis Campbell will push for a sub 1:05 clocking in the boys 500 with his 1:06.20 season best. He will have company with William Byrd's Drew Hall (1:06.34) and Episcopal's Allante Keels (1:06.57) coming off personal best performances last weekend. Campbell and Hall are both ranked in the top 10 in the country currently in the event. Jason Witt scorched a 9:17 solo last year in the boys 3200 race, but might have some company this time around with two Foot Locker finalists in teammate Michael Hammond as well as Luke Lovelace making the trip all the way up from South Carolina. Tim Smith of Cave Spring has already put up a solid 9:35 solo effort in the event this season. TJ Graham from Wakefield NC brings his recent US #2 34.43 performance to Richmond for the 300 meter dash. Graham also will be favored to win this event and the 55 meter dash earlier. Taylor Sykes of Great Bridge will be his top challenger almost a full second back at 35.42.  Great Bridge's Jayna McGehee had a big PR run last weekend at the St. Chris Invite with a 5:04 1600 PR and will try to keep that momentum going in a return trip to St. Chris for the girls 1000. However, Laura Rapp has matched McGehee's season best time of 3:01 this winter. Private school state champion Barbara Strehler of Trinity and defending AAA 800 and 1000 meter state champion Paige Johnston lead a field of a handful bunched up and capable of 5:15 or faster in the 1600 meter run. The Central Region is assembling a pretty good crew of milers with Ben Dejarnette, Lewis McPherson, Davis Barry, and Brian Welch battling it out in a preview of the regional meet for the 1600 with defending regional champ Dejarnette as the favorite. Grassfield girls could put on a good show with potential wins in the 4x200, 4x400, 500 with Keshia Rudolph, 300 with Myesha Barr or Jazmen Townsed in the 300, and 55 meter hurdles with Chantal Luedeke. • Updated Clash Performance List

Updated performance list for the St. Christopher's Mid-Atlantic Track Clash to be held Saturday, February 2nd at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, VA. There are several events which should produce some exciting races and fast times including the boys 500 meter dash with three athletes entered ranked 7th, 10th, and 17th in the country with times of 1:06. Grassfield's Curtis Campbell (pictured right by Ted Plunkett) leads the way with his 1:06.20 best, while William Byrd's Drew Hall at 1:06.34 and Episcopal's Allante Keels at 1:06.57 are not too far behind him. The 3200 will feature three Foot Locker finalists with the Midlothian pair of Jason Witt and Michael Hammond as well as two-time finalist Luke Lovelace of South Carolina. Also from the Carolinas, TJ Graham of Wakefield (NC) brings his US #2 300 meter clocking of 34.43 at UNC last weekend to St. Chris as Great Bridge's Taylor Sykes will attempt to give him a challenge in the event.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Keith Ricks

The Southeastern District is loaded with many of the top sprinters in Virginia. Many of them will be back next year as well as they have experienced great success on the state level early on as underclassmen with the likes of juniors Javanti Sparrow and Daniel Nix at Western Branch, junior Curtis Campbell at Grassfield, and sophomore Taylor Sykes at Great Bridge. However, Keith Ricks (pictured above by John Herzog) of King's Fork has taken a much different path and has to had to wait till his senior year to start to truly shine. After clocking the nation's third fastest time in the 300 meter dash this past weekend at Virginia Tech and also being one of the contenders for a state title in the 55 meter dash as a co-state leader in the sprint event, Ricks is emerging among the herd of young talent pool found in Chesapeake to be one of the state's elite sprinters for the 2008 track season. MileStat.com was able to catch up with Ricks for an interview.

  • Mid-Area Track Classic Performance List

Performance list for the Mid-Area Track Classic to be held Friday, February 1st at Liberty University's Tolsma Track Center in Lynchburg, VA. Top athletes to be featured in the meet include: David Wilson of George Washington is coming off a US #2 triple jump performance and will be back at it again to see if he can put up another 49 ft+ mark as well as win the 55 meter dash Harrisonburg duo of Bryant Clopper (pictured right by Tom Hoerner) and Dan Nafziger lead the distance races with Clopper as the top seed in the 1000 and Nazfizger in the 1600. Both ran strong legs on Harrisonburg's DMR team at Tech and followed up with great individual races including Clopper as a 4:24 winner in the 1600. Meanwhile, Alex Ott of Turner Ashby ran his first sub 4:20 1600 last week at Tech converted from his 4:21 mile and will be heavily favored to run away from the field in the 3200. Ott will not be the only star for Turner Ashby at the meet as thrower Justin Smith keeps pushing closer to 60 feet after a near PR mark of 57'4.50" in a win at the Tech Invite. The pole vault competition will have several of the state's best including winners from the Asics Invite two weeks ago in Daniel Inge of E.C. Glass and Rachael Hawks of Atlee. Inge cleared a personal best height of 15'7" two weeks ago at Liberty, while Hawks cleared 11'6" then for only the second time ever. Patrick Henry's Natalie Woodford has a strong shot at pulling off the 500 and 300 meter double with season bests of 1:18.61 and 41.50 to rank her among the top 10 in the state respectively in each event. After finishing second in the invitational mile at Virginia Tech ahead of more well-known runners, Janel Reeves of Brookville could continue to make a name for herself with a PR in the 3200 at Liberty. She has had back-to-back 5:11 races for 1600 (converted from mile at Tech) in the past two weeks.

  • Westfield squads get out to early leads at Concorde District Champs

Westfield leads the team scoring for both boys and girls after the completion of day one events at the Concorde District Indoor Championships. Events will resume at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center in seven days on February 7th. The loaded race of the evening was found in the girls 1600 meter run as it took a 5:15 effort to get out of the district with a top six finish, while there was a three-way battle for first with Westfield's Kerry Hartman (pictured left by John Herzog), Chantilly's Lia DiValentin, and Herndon's Hiruni Wijayaratne all being timed at 5:06 with Hartman as the district champion. It was a nice bounce back race for Hartman, who had an unfortunate fall in the invitational mile at Virginia Tech this past week to knock her out of the race. Wijayaratne also helped the Herndon girls to a 9:40.70 win in the 4x800 meter relay, while Oakton finished in a state meet qualifying time of 9:43.47. The Oakton boys should give 4x800 state leaders Thomas Edison a challenge at the Northern Region Meet as they won easily at the district meet with a time of 8:14.01. Oakton anchor Joe Lorusso also led a top 3 sweep by Oakton in the 1600 meter run with teammates Brian Hendricks (2nd, 4:33.52) and Scott Maxfield (3rd, 4:33.86) finishing right behind district champ Lorusso at 4:31.90. Westfield boys received big points out of the throws with seniors Branden Holmberg (49'0.50") and Ty Ruhland (48'5") as the top two finishers in the boys' shot put. The Westfield girls sit in good position for a district team title as the Lady Bulldogs already have a lead without  even having to run two of the state's better middle distance runners in Tasia Potasinski and Brittay Sevachko yet, while possessing the fastest three qualifiers for the 55 meter hurdles finals led by Haley Boone at 9.01. In the pole vault, the Sun brothers of Chantilly brought home a district champion in Wesley Sun at a 12'6" clearance and district runner-up in Curtis Sun at 11'6". • Graves returns to ole Bama stomping grounds at Celebration Arena with distance double

Abingdon senior Griff Graves (pictured right by David Fleenor) competed this past weekend in his former home state of Alabama in the only indoor track facility available to high school athletes in the state at Celebration Arena in Priceville for one of several USATF sanctioned age group meets open for high school aged runners. Alabama's high school athletic association recently got rid of indoor track as an official sport, so high school track athletes in the state have had to work around the lack of having an official season with open meets at the same venue which has had played host to past indoor state championships. Graves, who has not really put a high emphasis on the indoor season over the past two years with his focus this winter being the same as last winter in training for the junior men's 8K race at the US Cross Country Nationals in February, did not mind swinging down to his old stomping grounds in the Deep South for a rare indoor track appearance. The two-time Foot Locker finalist had a solid double on not necessarily a fast indoor track by winning the 1500 meter run in 4:07.02 by five seconds, while finishing a close second in the 3000 meter run later against one of Alabama's best in Patrick McGregor (8:54.22) at 8:55.22. His performances down in Alabama convert roughly to a 4:25 1600 and 9:35 3200. Graves will be making his third trip to San Diego after two Foot Locker Nationals appearances in the city when he travels across the country for February 16th's USA Cross Country Nationals to be held at Mission Bay Park. • Saturday Highlights from St. Christopher's Invite: Fair 1/2 inch off US #1

Top performance in Saturday's portion of the St. Christopher's Invitational came from Western Branch senior Ermesha Fair leaping to a mark in the triple jump which puts her only a half inch away from a US #1 with her 39'6" indoor personal best triple jump to rank US #2. Other noteworthy performances included: Photo by David Fleenor The most thrilling race of the meet came in the boys 500 meter dash with only three hundredths of a second separating Douglas Freeman's Ulrick Smith (1:06.54) and Episcopal's Allante Keels (1:06.57) in the final section, but it was Taylor Sykes of Great Bridge from the previous section sneaking out the win by a hundredth of a second over Smith at 1:06.53. Stafford senior Joey Murray had one of his best runs ever in the 1000 meter run as he recorded one of the state's faster times in the event in 2:32.98 as Murray outdueled Fork Union's Jeremy Haney (2:34.74). Chris Letson won the 300 meter dash in 35.97 and also helped Lake Braddock to a 4x400 relay win under 3:30 at 3:28.47. Friday's 55 meter hurdles winner Jeffrey Artis of Western Branch may have missed out on the great triple jump competition Friday at Tech, but it did not stop Artis from uncorking a big jump of his own at Saturday in the St. Christopher's Invite with US #7 mark of 48'8.25". Great Bridge's Jayna McGehee dominating the girls 1600 field by six seconds with the state's second fastest time in the distance event of 5:04.47. A personal best for the Great Bridge senior by seven seconds. Fort Defiance's Katie Cummings made up for a subpar showing in the shot put on Friday at Virginia Tech with a win on Saturday at St. Christopher's with a best throw of 38'2.75" to set a facility record. Another facility record was broken by Jordan Grant of Centreville in the 300 meter dash as she clocked a strong flat track time of 40.94 in the sprint event to best the next fastest by 1.6 seconds. • Friday Highlights from St. Chris Invite

Though the boys pole vault apparently went into Saturday despite being part of the Friday event schedule at the St. Christopher's Invite, the second annual invite got off to a good start in day one with plenty of great performances. Western Branch dominates sprints, hurdles, and 4x800's at St. Chris Photo by David Fleenor Western Branch swept the finals of all four short sprint and hurdle races with Amber Mitchell in the girls 55 meter dash (7.25), Torry Womack in the boys 55 meter dash (6.44), and more impressive 1-2 finishes in the finals of both 55 meter hurdle finals. Western Branch's Jessie Gaines and Ermesha Fair clocked US #7 and US #8 performances with Gaines as a 8.12 winner and Fair as a close second at 8.15. The boys hurdle pair of Kevin Newsome and Jeffrey Artis had already been ranked in the top 10 in the country prior to the meet and virtually flip flopped from their previous order and season best times with Artis at 7.43 and Newsome at 7.48. Swift 3200 times were put up by winners Lia DiValentin of Chantilly (11:02.86) and Davis Barry of Patrick Henry (9:28.96) Western Branch also had the winning girls 4x800 as the Lady Bruins won a close contest just ahead of Herndon and Maggie Walker in 9:42.78. Douglas Freeman had two first place finishes with a 8:12.74 run by their boys 4x800 meter relay and 10'9" clearance by Hillary Parsons in the girls pole vault. Lake Braddock's Melanie Akwule was just off from her second 18 foot leap of the season as she took the long jump with a mark of 17'9.75", while Hampton's Lavell Handy nearly had a foot PR mark in the long jump with his 22'11.75" win. • Wesh rocks a 39.63 flat track 300 at UNC

Landstown junior Marlena Wesh scorched the flat 200 meter track at the Eddie Smith Fieldhouse with the nation's fastest 300 meter flat track performance and US #3 overall with a 39.63 clocking at the Eastern High School Challenge in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Wesh was not done with just the 300 meter dash though as she was a runner-up in the 55 meter dash finals at 7.14 and also helped the Landstown girls break four minutes for the first time this season in the 4x400 at 3:58.77. However, Landstown's Wesh was not the only Virginian tearing up the track at UNC. Charisse Bryant of Green Run held her own against one of the nation's top hurdlers in Jasmine Stowers of South Carolina with a close runner-up finish to Stowers (8.01) in the 55 meter hurdles with a US #5 clocking of 8.04. Kellam's Bobby Peavey had a big meet in the distance races winning the 3200 on Friday in a PR time of 9:29.72 and came back to run another all-time best in a 1600 meter win on Saturday in 4:22.60. Green Run's Dejor Simmons finished third in a quality 55 meter dash finals and came away with one of the state's fastest times at 6.40 and also placed third in the 300 meter dash at 35.48. • St. Christopher's Invitational Preview

Photo by John Herzog Not everyone is at Virginia Tech this weekend as the second annual St. Christopher's Invite will be 50 team strong with some of the state's best squads in attendance at one of the state's top indoor track facilities. The state's top ranked boys and girls team in both the latest power and depth team rankings in Western Branch looks to have a strong presence in many events throughout the meet. Western Branch junior Daniel Nix (pictured above) will be attempting to pull of a tough 300 and 500 meter sprint double with only an hour separating the two events as they are being held back to back in Saturday's event schedule. Wayne Davis NC 7.16 55H US #10 All-Time!Photo by Ted Plunkett It was a snow-less day in Lynchburg for the Asics Invite, but weather elsewhere and paranoia of bad weather prevented some (or at least meet transportation woes) from competing in Lynchburg and meets across the state, but still the meets went on and there is plenty of action and performances to digest from this weekend over the next few days. Results are all posted from the major meets with on-site coverage from Asics to come including photos, videos, and interviews. Westfield now has two girls under 3 minutes in the 1000 after Brittany Sevachko won in a state best and US #9 time of 2:58.93. • Friday @ Asics Invite: Olamigoke US #3 TJ 47'8"

The threat of snow on Saturday kept some from making the trip to Lynchburg for this weekend's Asics Invitational, but those present on Friday evening were able to make for some outstanding performances. Mountain View's Olu Olamigoke (pictured left by John Herzog) bested previous triple jump state leader David Wilson of George Washington with a US #3 mark of 47'8". Meanwhile, Charlottesville's Justin Jackson joined Chris Copeland in the 6'8" club this season in the high jump. Peter Dorrell broke 4:20 for another time in the 1600 as he led from start to finish in 4:19.88 and Tasia Potasinski crept closer to five minutes with a state best 1600 of 5:04.69. The Atlee girls top vaulters switched their usual orders with Rachael Hawks as the winner clearing 11'6" for the second meet in a row and Emma Dejarnette at second in 11'0". North Carolina ruled the sprints with winners in the 300 meter dashes as Kelsey McCorkle won the 300 meter dash in 40.91 and has the top time in the 55 meter dash prelims at 7.30. • Asics Invitational Preview - Boys

Johnny Dutch put a show for Virginians last year at the Virginia Tech Invitational and another hurdler from North Carolina will do the same this weeekend at the Asics Invite in US leader in the 55 (7.23) and 60 (7.63) meter hurdles, Wayne Davis of Southeast Raleigh. The defending Nike Outdoor Nationals 110 meter hurdles champion and World Youth champion and record holder will definitely be in a class of his owns in the 55 meter hurdles at Liberty. Some of Virginia's best hurdlers will be competing this weekend as well and the scary thought is if they competed in the 55 meter hurdles and the Southeast Raleigh junior Davis competed in the 60 meter hurdles next to them, Davis could likely still win. Douglas Freeman's Michael Quash and Brookville's Ethan Nixon are ranked third and fourth respectively in the state with season best times of 7.64 and 7.67 in the 55 meter hurdles, while Davis ran 7.63 in his 60 meter hurdles victory last weekend at Arkansas.

  • East Coast Invitational... Twenty Years Ago

This weekend will mark the 49th Annual East Coast Invitational. In the past it has been one of the major indoor invitationals in Virginia not only for the high school athletes but college athletes as well. It has been held in the Arena, the Coliseum, and now the Arthur Ashe Center. In recent years with the coming of the no - spike policy the meet has declined in importance. When we look back at the meet when it was in its prime we see the names of state and national high school champions, college All-Americans and future Olympians competing in the meet (not to mention quite a few of our current coaches). At the 29th Annual East Coast Invitational in January of 1988 the East Coast Meet was in its prime. Not only did it draw some of the best in Virginia High Schools but quite a few of the major state colleges.

  • Athlete Spotlight: Tasia Potasinski

Westfield senior Tasia Potasinski (pictured left by John Herzog) was rolling last weekend at the CNU Showcase in Newport News. The fastest returning 800 meter runner in the state (2:12.21 PR) anchored her 4x800 meter relay last Friday to a US #1 time of 9:22.90 with a 2:15 anchor leg split. She followed up on day two of events with a near personal best and US #10 time of 2:59.36 in a 1000 meter run as she defeated a strong field including defending state 1000 meter champion Paige Johnston of Midlothian. Potasinski looks to keep the momentum going into this weekend at the Asics Invitational at Liberty University where she will compete against another state champion runner in Laura Rapp (4:55 1600 best) of Heritage in Friday night’s 1600 meter run. The Westfield girls were able to win that elusive first state title in the 4x800 meter relay last June after coming into several previous state meets as one of the top squads in the event. Maybe it is Potasinski’s time to win her first individual state title as well after she broke out onto the scene as a freshman with a 2:15 800 meter win at the Northern Region Outdoor Meet. The country of Poland certainly has been kind to the Virginia high school running community as of late with allowing us to have 2007 Nike Indoor Nationals 800 champ Axel Mostrag compete at Fork Union as well as Potasinski with Polish heritage. Potasinski’s father was born in Poland. MileStat.com’s Brandon Miles caught up with the Westfield middle distance star for an athlete spotlight interview.

  • Resurfaced track re-energizes FUMA Invite

A newly resurfaced track at the Estes Athletic Center definitely had a positive effect on the performances at the 2008 FUMA Invitational held at Fork Union Military Academy. The return of spikes being allowed also helped with a packed house of 43 teams bringing in many of the state's top athletes. Nansemond River competed in two meets this weekend with CNU on Friday and FUMA on Saturday. The team was well represented in the sprints and jump at the Estes Center with Tanay Chandler winning the girls 55 (7.21) and 300 (42.91) meter dashes, while Kelvin Griffin cleared 6'4" in the high jump and leaped 22'4" in the long jump to take both events. The pole vault saw some high flying action with Kate Collins of Nelson County clearing a VA #11 all-time height of 11'1", while E.C. Glass senior Daniel Inge clearing 14'7" makes him the lone state leader in the event and #25 all-time in state history. Despite having individual winners in the 55 and 300 meter dash, Nansemond River boys fell just short of a team title by 11 points to Western Albemarle. Western's Tyler Stutzman (pictured right by David Fleenor) rolled out one of the fastest 1600 meter times ever at the Estes Center in a 4:20.80 win leading four under 4:30 on the 160 meter flat track, while Kyle Satterwhite (9:41.21) was equally impressive in a narrow 3200 win over Louisa's Thomas Baker (9:41.34). Nick Ward claimed another first place finish for the Warriors with a 1:08.37 clocking. Two relay wins in the 4x400 (3:39.84) and 4x800 (8:40.75) also helped pull them ahead of Nansemond River.Turner Ashby senior Justin Smith launched an indoor personal best throw in the shot put of 56'2" with one of the top field events performances of the meet. • Dorrell leads a 1-2-3 sweep by VA in Montgomery Inv mile

With Millrose Mile invitations on the line and intense competition from some of Maryland and Pennsylvania's best milers, the state of Virginia had a dominant showing in the elite mile race at the Montgomery Invitational in Landover, Maryland on Saturday. Blacksburg senior Peter Dorrell (pictured left by John Herzog) led a top three sweep of Virginians in the boys' mile race with a 4:16.81 victory. Dorrell had been considered a pre-race favorite, so his win was not nearly as a surprise to have two other Virginians finish right behind him under 4:20 to best the remainder of the field in Oakton senior Joe Lorusso (2nd, 4:17.83) and Orange County senior Logan Collins (3rd, 4:18.55). All three individuals ran personal best times at Montgomery.Maryland ruled in the girls' mile though with a close finish between Walt Whitman's Morgan Gay (5:08.48) and Bethesda-Chevy Chase's Alex Doll (5:08.53) for first and second. Osbourn Park sophomore Ariel Karabinus was the top finisher from Virginia in the race with a third place run of 5:15.18.Green Run's Charisse Bryant improved upon her state leading time in the 55 meter hurdles with a 8.16 victory at the PG Center. Bryant is now ranked third in the country in the hurdles. There were several solid performances in the field events. Tynita Butts of T.C. Williams ended up third in the high jump despite clearing 5'6" with three others, while winning the long jump with a mark of 17'2".
