The first edition of the Virginia high school indoor track team depth rankings. These rankings were scored 20 deep for individuals and 20 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 20 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 20th place. The depth rankings favor teams with more than just a few individuals stars gaining a bulk of the points and a well balanced team competitive in multiple events than the power rankings.

When the bid was given to Reno, Nevada to host the 2009 USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships, a snowtorm was certainly not the expected race day weather conditions. Snow flakes in the air and a white powder covering the course is exactly what a contingent of Maggie Walker runners led by their All-State runner Clarissa Schick experienced during their races this past weekend. Schick earned All-American honors once again in a USATF championship meet after achieving the distinction last December when the meet was held at Pole Green Park. Schick (pictured by Margie Swart) placed third in the young women's division 5K with a time of 19:23. Also earning All-American honors from Maggie Walker were Marc Breidenbaugh in the intermediate boys division (19th, 16:51) and Caroline Newcomb in the young women division (19th, 20:20).

The CNU Winter Frolic this past weekend in Newport News saw quite a few of the state's top athletes open up their indoor season against solid competition on a quality 200 meter track. As a result, many early state leading performances (
Boys -
Girls) were produced as well as some times and marks to place on the national leaderboard (
Boys -
Girls). Notable performances included a near 56 foot toss by Sulaiman Fareed of Highland Springs in the shot put, a swift 7.04 clocking by defending AAA state champion Keilah Tyson in the 55 meter dash, an automatic state qualifier 4x800 time of 9:37 by the West Potomac girls, an impressive 1:42 posted on a flat track by the Western Branch girls 4x200, and Dinwiddie's Quintaze Jackson reaching out to a nation's best 46'11.25" triple jump. Only one runner stands alone among all the contenders in Virginia this fall with a final race to go this weekend in San Diego for the Foot Locker Nationals. Fairfax senior Kevin Dowd rose to the "Cream of the Crop" at the Foot Locker South Regional in the Charlotte as the only Virginian to qualify and finish in the top 10 in the seeded boys race. He will be joined in San Diego by another Northern Region runner in Paige Kvartunas of West Springfield, who finished ninth in the seeded girls race at the South Regional. After being bothered by an achilles injury mid-season and failing to win regional or state crowns, Dowd is hitting his peak in the post-season as shown with his sub 15 5K run at McAlpine and feeling confident about racing at his best this weekend as well in a field of the nation's 40 best from four regions.

Midlothian junior Brayden Burleigh competed this past weekend at the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland, Oregon. The top runner on likely one of the top returning teams for next fall is anxious to make a return trip back to NXN and potentially with his team. His race at Portland Meadows was not spectacular with a 74th place, but the fact that he qualified was an achievement in itself as Burleigh (pictured by Cheryl Treworgy of prettysporty.com) was certainly not on the short list of Virginia runners expected to compete in a national race this season. The former Nike Indoor freshmen mile champion had a breakthrough cross country race at the NXN Southeast Regional with a 15:24 fourth place finish to earn the trip to Portland.

MileStat.com was on-site for the first meet of the 2009-2010 indoor season this past weekend at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. It was a very strong opener for the Atlee boys and Western Branch girls as both teams had more than their share of event winners. Western Branch girls did not show its full cards on the opening weekend of the indoor season, but certainly showed a glimpse of what to expect from them this season as they swept the relays and had five individual winners. Coach Jim Triemplar appears to have one of his better squads in recent years at Atlee. At least based off their team showing at the Peninsula District Icebreaker, which saw the Raiders collect of seven wins. The Atkinson brothers had a large role in many of those wins.

Both Blacksburg girls and Hidden Valley girls exceeded expectations and national rankings to finish sixth and 13th respectively at the Nike Cross Nationals on Saturday in Portland, Oregon. The sixth place finish for the Blacksburg girls is the highest finish by any Virginia team (boys or girls) in the meet's history and second highest ever by a Southeast region squad. Kathleen Stevens put her team and herself on the national map as she almost came up with the individual win against a field of All-Americans and state champions but was outkicked in the end by Katie Flood of Iowa to finish as a narrow runner-up in 17:48.
