  • Boo Williams Winter Break Invite:5 US #1's and several flat track US #1's

A total of five US #1's, numerous US top 10 performances, and several flat track US #1's were produced at the two-day Boo Williams Winter Break Invitational on Wednesday and Thursday in Hampton. In the rarely contested event in Virginia of the 60 meter dash, Christal Peterson of Phoebus and Walter Mitchell of Salem took advantage of the opportunity to run the nation's fastest times with 7.47 clocking for defending Nike Indoor Nationals 60 dash champ Peterson and a performance of  6.95 for Mitchell who will be seeking his first state title this year to add to his two AAU age group national titles.     Mitchell was a close runner-up in the 200 meter dash in day one events with a US #2 time of 22.58 and clocked a season best time of 6.47 to win the 55 meter dash, which ranks him 2nd fastest in Virginia this season. Mitchell defeated Beach district rival Justin Burke in the 55 dash finals, which the defending outdoor 400 meter dash champion Burke from First Colonial later clocked the fastest flat track performance nationally and US #9 overall with his state leading time of 35.49.      The Western Branch girls may not have the nation's fastest time in the 4x200 meter relay after Medgar Evers ran 1:39.28 on the fast banked track at the New York Armory this week, but Western Branch showed they could likely match or beat that national leading time if given the opportunity to race on a banked track after their US #2 1:40.83 performance on a flat 200 meter track. In the first day of events on Wednesday, the invitational 200 meter dash event produced US leaders for both boys and girls with one of Group AA's finest in Kiara Porter winning the girls' race in 25.48. Monica Williams, the 500 meter dash national leader from the 2009-2010 indoor season from Green Run High School, opened up her 2010-2011 season with a US #2 performance of 1:16.70. Phoebus junior Jazmine Vaughan ran a state leading time of 8.37 in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles as a runner-up to a national leading performance of 7.97 by Danielle Davis from Southeast Raleigh in North Carolina.      More to come from the Boo Williams Winter Break Invitational including race videos, interviews, and photos!   Boo Williams Winter Break Invitational Complete Results   Race Videos - More videos being added on Friday.

  • New Feature: Tag yourself and others in videos on MileStat.com!

MileSplit has added the ability to tag an athlete in a video, just like you can in a photo or article.  The public can do this.  Currently this is only available when you are viewing the video in the context of a meet page, but we'll be extending the functionality.   Once the athlete is tagged it not only shows it the tagged athlete under the video, but the video also shows up on the athlete page. See an example as we tagged all race and interview videos of Foot Locker finalist Mattie Webb of Western Albemarle from this past cross country season to her athlete profile.   Speaking of which, if you didn't notice... we have been updating the look and feel of the athlete profile pages and am going to continue to tweak those. So more to come.

  • History projects over winter break

MileStat.com is doing a bunch of self-assigned history projects during the winter break, especially this week with no meets to cover until next Tuesday. We are currently adding plenty of past state meet results from cross country, indoor, and outdoor state meets during this time as well as other meets from the pre-MileStat.com and internet age. It is a very time consuming task, but rewarding once completed.   These results will also be added to our database and rankings, so some of the all-time greats and current high school coaches will be represented in the site's database rankings and have their own athlete profiles. Also will be updating our VA High School Top 25 Indoor All-Time List and start work on a similar all-time list of outdoor track. Over the past week, we have added results and performances to the site of all place finishers from all Group AAA State Indoor Championships from 2000 to 1975. We will be adding results from earlier years and also looking to add historical results from Group AA and the outdoor state championships. The added history will benefit the site staff in better knowledge and insight into the past great athletes for potential featured articles on them as well as educate today's athletes on the names and performances from the past.   Group AAA State Meet History:  1975  1976 1977  1978  1979  1980  1981 - No meet held 1982  1983  1984  1985  1986  1987  1988  1989  1990  1991  1992  1993  1994  1995  1996  1997  1998  1999 2000

  • US leading pole vaulters Overstreet 12-7 and Pillow 15-3 at Fork Union

Atlee pole vaulters Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet both achieved personal best clearances on Wednesday night at the Fork Union Mini Invite. Atlee senior Pillow, a third place finisher in both the Group AAA indoor and outdoor state meet last year, cleared a US #1 height of 15'3" at the Estes Athletic Center late into the evening. Earlier in the meet, Overstreet set off her own crowd roars and ovation after clearing 12'7" on her very first attempt to also maintain and improve her position on the national leaderboard.      Tony Green was the indoor triple jump state champion at Patrick Henry last year, but a family move now has Green at Louisa County competing in the Group AA classification. Green could become Group AA's most dominant all-around track athlete this year as complimenting his specialty of triple jump is a new personal best mark of 22'7" in the long jump at FUMA and winning a competitive 55 meter hurdles race with Atlee's Marques Atkinson (7.88) with a 7.84 clocking. Atkinson posted a solid 500 meter dash time later on the 160 meter unbanked track with a 1:07.85 performance, which was faster than his 1:07.90 win on CNU's 200 meter track this past Saturday.     The Atlee boys are one of the early front runners for the Group AAA state team titles with a nucleus of individual stars including pole vaulter Pillow, multi-eventer Atkinson, and short sprinter Trevor Ellie. Ellie has won three straight 55 meter dash races to open his season with his latest at Fork Union in a season best clocking of 6.48. The time of 6.48 ties Ellie with Oscar Smith's Joel Coleman as a state leader in the event.     Louisa County sophomore Javanique Burruss is one of the state's top returning long jumpers after nearly eclipsing 19 feet as a freshmen last year with a best leap of 18'11.50". She underperformed in the long jump at Fork Union with an 8th place finish, but did show her best performance ever in the hurdles with a 9.09 personal best victory in the 55 meter hurdles. King George senior Brittany Kersey was a state runner-up in the Group AA State Outdoor Championships last June after clearing 5'3" and has maintained her form at the start of the indoor season with another 5'3" clearance to pick up first place at Fork Union.   More to come from Fork Union including race videos and photos.   Fork Union Mini Invite #2 Complete Results   Race Videos by Brandon Miles (22 total)

Oakton girls swept the top 3 places in the 1600 meter run, while Briana Stewart picked up 10 points with a first place 3:13 performance in the 1000 meter run for Oakton. Christal Peterson ran just off her 40.09 personal best in the 300 meter dash with a 40.20 victory and also competed on the victorious 1:45.02 4x200 meter relay, which is currently the state leading time.   All photos by Ryan Kelly   Phoebus girls cleaned up in other events as well including a 1-2 win in the 55 meter hurdles with Jasmine Vaughan (8.41) and Trena Shelton (8.62) while outdoor 300 meter hurdles state champ Vamonie Boddie finished fourth in the finals. Shelton was runner-up to teammate Kaydianne Mckenzie (35'7.25" in the triple jump. Mckenzie was a foot behind Oakton's Meghan Jean-Baptiste in the long jump as Jean-Baptiste (35'3" for 4th in the triple jump)  figures to be one of the top jumpers in the Northern Region this indoor season and scored key points in the jumping events to help her team to the title at the Real Deal High School Classic.     Oakton boys had a mix of individual winners in the distance as expected against the Eastern Region and Tidewater distance runners, but more surprising first places in the sprints from Matthew Henton showing his range with wins in the 500 meter dash (1:07.30) and 55 meter dash (6.54). Oakton boys won the 4x800 meter relay, while having at least 3 scorers in the 1600, 1000, and 3200 meter races.      Jaquan Demiel of Lakeland is one of the state's top returning hurdlers after winning the Group AAA 300 meter hurdles title as well as taking state runner-up in the 110 meter hurdles last June at Sportsbackers Stadium. Without much competition, Demiel clocked a 7.65 easy win in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles at Boo Williams Sportsplex on Saturday.   The boys' 300 meter dash was a very competitively close event with five sprinters in the 36 second range led by event winner Kempton Moore from a slower section with his 36.24 performance bettering Indian River senior Darius Vaughan's 36.35 performance from the fast section.      Top performances at the meet from the field events included a personal best 6'4" clearance by Clark Thornhill of Douglas Freeman in the boys' high jump and Gloucester's Jazmine Banks winning by nearly five feet in the girls' shot put with a mark of 36'6.75". • Liberty Christmas Invite: Carter 4:22/9:30 double, Bingham 14'6"

All photos by Andrew Kicinski   Distance runners led the Virginia performances from the Liberty Christmas Invitational while athletes from North Carolina schools dominated the sprints, hurdles, field events, and sprint relays. A state runner-up last June at the Group AA State Outdoor Championships, Carter is seeking his first state individual title during his senior year of track after leading Blacksburg to two consecutive state cross country team titles.     Bassett's Michelle Church kept Blacksburg senior Sarah Dorrell from achieving a distance double wins herself as Church finished a half second ahead of Dorrell in 5:11. After a 5:12 1600 runner-up performance, Dorrell on the next day defeated Church (3rd, 3:06) and West Potomac junior Sarah Jane Underwood (2nd, 3:04) in the 1000 meter run with a 3:02 victory.     Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans had the top performance in the girls' field events with a top mark of 37'9.25" in the shot put. Evans was a top 3 performer in both the shot put and discus as the Group AA State Outdoor Meet last spring. In a very competitive boys' pole vault event with three vaulters over 14'6", Liberty Christian Academy senior Cody Bingham placed third at a 14'6" clearance. Bingham is one of the state's top multi-event athletes and nearly placed in 3 other events this weekend at the Tolsma Track Center.   Liberty Christmas Invitational Complete Results Liberty Christmas Invitational Photo Gallery by Andrew Kicinski

  • Foot Locker Nationals: Bile 14th, Webb 29th, Frantz 33rd, Chase 38th

Photo by Margot Kelly   Not a banner day for the four Virginians competing at the 2010 Foot Locker Nationals with Annandale junior Ahmed Bile as the only one of the group to finish among the top half of the 40 runner field with his 14th place All-American finishing time of 15:33. Bile moved up in the last 400 meters to pick off a few places to slip inside the top 15. Douglas Freeman senior Silas Frantz, competing in not only his first Foot Locker Nationals but his first national meet all together (no prior racing appearances at Nike/New Balance Indoor and Outdoor Nationals) placed 33rd overall and 21 seconds behind Bile.     Photo by Don Rich   Both races opened with very brisk first mile splits including New York's Aisling Cuffee leading most of the girls' field under 5:30 for the first mile. Western Albemarle senior Mattie Webb got out the quickest between the two Virginians and was the top finisher from the state in 29th place at a time of 18:28. Webb has made a big jump in one year's time to even have qualified to compete at Foot Locker Nationals and will be running next year at NC State. Lake Braddock's Sophie Chase had a personally disappointing race in 38th place (18:53) out of 40 runners, but has two more years to return back to Balboa Park for certainly more competitive showings and contending for All-American finishes.    Congratulations to all four runners for earning the title of Foot Locker finalist in the 2010 cross country season. More to come from San Diego including post-race interviews with all four Virginians and plenty of full coverage of the Foot Locker Nationals can be found at MileSplit US.   Results: Boys Race - Girls Race   Post-Race Interviews: Ahmed Bile - Mattie Webb - Silas Frantz  - Sophie Chase   Photo Galleries: Margot Kelly Gallery - Don Rich Gallery - Brandon Miles Gallery

  • CNU Winter Frolic Day 1 - Tyson 7.01 55 & 19+ LJ! Overstreet vaults 12'6!

All photos by John Herzog After a sub 40 second 300 meter clocking and 5'6" clearance last weekend at Boo Williams Sportsplex to open her senior year of indoor track, Western Branch's Keilah Tyson had a nice tandem of performances in the sprints and jumps again on Friday at CNU. Tyson just missed matching or besting her previous 55 meter dash performance with a US #1 7.01 clocking in the finals and had another early season US leading performance in the long jump with her leap of 19'0.75".   Atlee senior Cameron Overstreet ascended quickly to all-time heights in the pole vault to begin this indoor season with her new personal best and high school facility record clearance of 12'6". Overstreet had cleared over 12 feet four times last year as a junior with one clearance at 12'3" before her performance on Friday night in Newport News.   A great matchup at the CNU Winter Frolic between two of the state's top returning hurdlers in Daniel McFadden of Heritage and Anthony Williams of Potomac Senior. Williams came out strong in the prelims with a 7.44 clocking, but McFadden had the better race in the finals to edge Williams with a 7.45 victory. Williams took second in the finals at 7.49, while his Potomac teammate Devin Brewer placed third.   More to come from CNU including photo gallery of both Friday and Saturday's events by John Herzog.   CNU Winter Frolic - Day 1 Results

  • Peninsula District Ice Breaker Coverage

Highlights from this past weekend's Peninsula District Ice Breaker at the Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. MileStat.com was on-site with photo coverage from John Herzog.     Western Branch senior Keilah Tyson clocked a 300 meter personal best to become the first girl in the US under 40 seconds in the 300 meter dash with her 39.72 clocking. A past state champion in the 55 meter dash, 100 meter dash, and high jump, Tyson also won the high jump with a successful clearance of 5'6".     Tehquin Warrick of Phoebus, a 48.50 quarter miler last spring, opened his indoor season as a double winner in the 500 (1:07.69) and 300 (36.48) meter dash.     A very early clash of some of the expected top girls' 4x400 meter relays between Bethel, Phoebus, and Western Branch with the Bethel girls impressively breaking 4 minutes in their first race of the indoor season in a 3:59.47 victory ahead of Phoebus (4:00) and Western Branch (4:02).     Heritage High School out of Newport News had three star individuals winning events this weekend including hurdler Daniel McFadden returning to his top form prior to a hamstring injury late in the 2009-2010 indoor season with a 7.48 first place to start this season.     Heritage's Jenira Shufford leaped out to a mark of 17'10" for the best performance in the long jump and ahead of triple jump winner Thireyona Legg of Booker T. Washington. Shufford finished third in the 55 meter dash finals with freshmen teammate Asonya Anderson's 7.09 high school opener allowing her to beat defending state and national indoor champion Christal Peterson of Phoebus. Anderson and Shufford teamed up as members of the victorious 4x200 meter relay as well.   Complete Results MileSplit US National Elite Performances (99 Total) Photo Gallery by John Herzog - Over 2,000 photos.

  • Virginians @ 2010 Nike Cross Nationals: Midlo boys 21st, LeHardy 26th, Cutright 38th

The state of Virginia was represented by one team and two individuals at the 2010 Nike Cross Nationals held Saturday, December 4th at Portland Meadows in Portland, Oregon. Course conditions were arguably worse than ever in meet history as times absolutely went out the window as runners raced only for highest individual and team placement possible with one another. It was a mixed bag of results for the Virginia delegation in Oregon this weekend.   Photo by Ryan Kelly   The Midlothian boys had a disappointing showing in the mud at Portland Meadows for the 2010 Nike Cross Nationals. This year's Virginia 3A state cross country champions and NXN Southeast Regional team champions placed 21st out of 22 teams with 462 points. Competing as the Chesterfield XC Club, Darren Barlow led the Midlo boys as the team's top finisher in Oregon with a 103rd place finish (17:43) and sophomore Sean Willard was one of the team's individual bright spots in 108th place (17:50). Nonetheless, the Midlothian had a very successful season in becoming the fourth boys' team from Virginia to qualify for the Nike Cross Nationals (Midlothian - 2006, Thomas Jefferson S&T - 2007, Jamestown - 2008) and winning their fourth state cross country team title in school history.   Photo by Ryan Kelly   Hidden Valley's two individual qualifiers in Annie LeHardy and Haley Cutright had much better showing than the Midlo team in Portland. Both Hidden Valley seniors competed last year at NXN when their team qualified as an at-large berth and used their experience from a year ago to their advantage to improve upon their 2009 NXN finishes. LeHardy went from 52nd place in the 2009 race to 26th place (19:28) in 2010 as the Group AA state cross country champion was the highest finisher among the Southeast Region individual qualifiers. Her teammate Haley Cutright was only 12 places behind in 38th place (19:51) to improve drastically from her 90th place finish in the 2009 Nike Cross Nationals. LeHardy and Cutright look to build upon their fall success into the track season, which Cutright has never ran track before while LeHardy has never ran indoor track. The possibility is more likely for both happening for the first time in the 2011 track season, which could help form a potential state record chasing 4x800 with teammates Carolyn Bethel and Ashleigh Torres.   Full Coverage of Nike Cross Nationals at MileSplit US Meet Page

  • Nike Cross Nationals Preview

The 7th annual Nike Cross Nationals will be held on Saturday, December 4th, at Portland Meadows on the north side of the city of Portland, Oregon. The meet has served as the unofficial yet virtually legitimate national high school cross country team championships since NXN's inception in 2004. A total of 22 of the nation's best cross country teams representing nine regions across the country will be racing alongside each other on the three loop course inside the horsetrack within the infield area of Portland Meadows.  The 5K course layout has traditionally been muddy and slick footing as a result of the area's regular rainfall. The Nike experience is an unforgettable few days for the athletes and coaches starting with the all-expense paid trip to Oregon as well as plenty of free gear and other perks showered upon them as they arrive on the Nike Campus.

Thanks to Jason Byrne and MileSplit for helping this site grow and continue to exist today as well as the entire high school community in Virginia between the site contributors, coaches, athletes, and parents who have supported and visited the site for all these years. Here is to another 10 years of providing coverage of Virginia high school cross country and track!   - Brandon Miles, MileStat.com   Check out some of the old front pages going back to spring of 2001 on the internet archive's way back machine.
