Quintin Fulgham (pictured above by John Herzog) had a strong start to the Central Region Championships at Sports Backers Stadium as the Thomas Dale senior won the long jump with a mark of 23'3", while posting the fastest qualifying times in the prelims of the 100 (10.77) and 200 (21.86) meter dashes. The Atlee boys (38 pts) and Thomas Dale girls (31 pts) picked up considerable amounts on Wednesday to lead the team competition after day one events. All photos and running event videos are now posted from day one of the Central Region Championships.

Jaquan Dickson (pictured left by John Herzog) is a story of second chances and redemption. As a sophomore at James Monroe, Dickson was a bright young track star who figured to be contending for Group AA state titles in the sprints for several years. That promising future took a screeching halt and was potentially over when Dickson was arrested on gun and marijuana possession charges then sent to a juvenile detention facility in Fredericksburg. Following a 6 month house arrest and lengthy re-instatement process back into the school system, a very changed and different young man for the better returned to the James Monroe track team as a senior this year. Not only has his new attitude and improved behavior been exemplary but his performances as well as he current owns Group AA's fastest times in the 100 and 200 meter dash while winning four district titles individually last week at the Battlefield District Outdoor T&F Championships. Whatever the outcome at the state meet in two weeks at Harrisonburg High School, Dickson's story already has been a success for the maturity growth and turnaround in his life with the help of the positive influences found through the people and sport of track & field. Courtney Dobbs (pictured right by John Herzog), a senior at Deep Run High School in Glen Allen, has went from running number three at times for her team during the fall cross country season to potentially becoming a state title contender in the girls' distance races this outdoor season. Dobbs has ran personal bests of 4:55 for 1600 meters and 10:36 for 3200 meters this spring to lead an impressive trio of Deep Run distance runners with sister Erica Dobbs and future Virginia Tech teammate Madalyn Nuckols who have been rolling out fast times all spring along in essentially time trial races against one another with runners from other schools unable to keep up. After giving up travel soccer following her junior season and correcting breathing issues and sickness during the cross country season, a full-time running and healthy Dobbs has emerged as a state title threat in a very deep year for the girls' distance events. When the results from the VA Runner Invitational showed a 187'2" discus throw from Fauquier senior Kyle Fortney, it could have easily looked to many as a typo mistake in the results. Maybe it was really a 167'2? Nope. It was legit and so is the tree chopping young man who has went undefeated against in-state competition this season in the discus.
A fourth place finisher in last year's Group AAA State Championships, Fortney is now contending for a Group AA state title with Fauquier's reclassification and the future Navy Midshipmen validated his performance at Colonial Forge with a series of throws over 170 feet including a 179'4" mark at the Evergreen District Championships. Fortney's mark ranks him among the top 25 in the nation and is the second best discus mark in Virginia in the past ten years during the MileStat.com era (December 2000 to present). The 2010 VISAA State Championships was arguably one of the best in recent meet history in terms of producing some of the state's top performances of the outdoor season. Liberty Christian Academy junior Cody Bingham led all performers with his new VA #1 clearance of 15'3" in the pole vault, which was one of 8 events total that the multi-event star competed during the day. Liberty Christian Academy had three of the top individuals in the meet with Bingham as well as Demitri Knowles and Dana Mercer. The Bahamaian native Knowles sprinted to the state's second fastest 100 time behind only Darrell Wesh in a 10.65 meet record victory and notched another PR later in the 200 with a 21.47 clocking. Mercer, only a sophomore, swept the horizontal jumps while picking up a win in the 100 meter dash and runner-up performance in the 200 meter dash.
Mercer finished second in the 200 finals to Hampton Roads Academy's Emmy Fraenk who broke two meet records in the 400 meter dash (57.33) and 200 (24.73). Taylor Clevinger was also a double winner on the track as the St. Catherine's junior pulled away for first place finishes in the 1600 (5:20) and 800 (2:18) meter races while also anchoring her 4x400 meter relay to victory and more importantly her team to a narrow state team title over Collegiate in a dramatic final event point swing for the first place trophy.
VMI bound Cabell Willis (pictured right by John Herzog) of Collegiate won the 1600 meter with the state's fourth fastest performance behind only the big three of Kostelac, Mearns, and Paisley from Penn Relays with an eight second PR time of 4:12.17 to lead three under 4:20. Willis later came back to win the 3200 meter run as well in 9:31. Fork Union boys now can begin another 20 year streak of state team titles as they came back as team champions in 2010 following St. Christopher's snapping their long-standing streak in 2009. It took a team effort with a collection of individuals and relays as they were shut out from having any individual champions, but did set a new meet record of 42.24 in the 4x100 meter relay which ranks third fastest in the state of Virginia.

The boys dominated 2009...
A gathering of the state's best and elite will be found on Friday night at Sports Backers Stadium in Richmond for the 10th annual Southern Track Classic. The meet started in 1999 by meet director Dan Ward has a selective finals only by invitation format to produce some of the fastest times and best marks in the state of Virginia each outdoor season. This year's meet expects to be no exception and one of the best ever with some premier events loaded with big names and stars. Field events start at 5:00 PM with the first running going off at 6:40 PM. MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage providing updates, race videos, photos, and interviews.
Southern Track Classic - Accepted Entries (as of April 22nd)
Loudoun Valley sophomore Audrey Houghton has to do a quick turnaround between her top two events of the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run with the 300 meter hurdles as her only break to separate her two races. The limited recovery time has not affected her this outdoor season though as she currently has the Northwest Region's fastest time and several invitational wins in the 400 meter dash, while most recently running a PR time of 2:18 in the 800 meter run doubling back from a 400 win at VMI. With the perfect mix of speed and endurance, Houghton (pictured right by John Herzog) seems destined to become a great 800 meter runner as the district champion and top 25 finisher this past cross country season might have the fastest open 400 PR out of any competitive runner from the fall season at 57.35. Houghton is the top seed in both the 400 and 800 on Friday at the Loudoun County Championships. Read more for interview with the Loudoun Valley sophomore...
Lizzie Powell (pictured left by John Herzog) of Patrick Henry extended her state record in the pole vault to an even greater height tonight at Deep Run High School with a US #3 successful clearance of 13'3". Powell had first set the state record at the Lee-Davis Invitational on April 17th as the first female vaulter in state history to clear 13 feet. Only Morgann Leleux from Louisiana at 13'7" and Kortney Ross from California at 13'5" have went higher than Powell in the pole vault this outdoor season in the country. Powell also won the long jump at the 12 team meet at Deep Run.

These rankings were calculated by scoring the top 20 performances in the database for the 2010 outdoor season. We scored 20 deep for individuals and 20 deep for relays. For example, for individuals 1st place received 20 points for their team, on down to 1 point for 20th place.
David Woodson graduated from Gloucester High School back in 2005 with modest personal best times of 10:06 in the 3200 meter run and 4:31 in the 1600 meter run while running just under 17 minutes for the 5K. In the next month, Woodson (pictured right by Ryan Kelly) will be wrapping up his collegiate career at Christopher Newport University as a competitor in the men's 3000 meter steeplechase at the NCAA Division III National Championships. A four-time NCAA national qualifier (twice in cross country and twice in outdoor track), Woodson was not highly recruited by Division I schools with scholarship offers coming out of high school without an All-State honors, regional or district titles to his name. At CNU, Woodson has developed to become one of the school's all-time great distance runners with school all-time list performances, school records, conference titles, and NCAA national berths. Woodson is classic example of how Division III athletics provides a great opportunity for high school athletes overlooked by Division I schools to becoming Division I caliber athletes with an additional four years of development.
Booker T. Washington senior Deshawn Wilson might be the best sprinter in the state that you have never heard of. Between missing his entire junior season due to academic ineligibility and then an injury preventing him from competing individually at the state indoor meet and challenge for the 300 state title as one of the top seeds, Wilson's opportunities to make a name for himself have been limited and few.
This past weekend, Wilson (pictured right by Ryan Kelly) had arguably one of the best sprint triples of the year in the state at the Landstown Invitational with two personal best times in the 100 (10.87) and 200 (21.62) meter dash and a 48.51 victory in the 400 meter dash. A state qualifier as a sophomore in the 300 meter dash and the lone remaining member of Booker T. Washington's 3:18 4x400 meter relay from the 2008 Penn Relays, Wilson has been determined to make up for the lost time as a junior this year in both the classroom as well as on the track. Read more for interview with Deshawn Wilson...
Myah Hicks (pictured right by John Herzog) is a junior at Thomas Edison High School who returned this year as one of the state's top returning half milers as she nearly pulled out the Group AAA state title last spring in the 800. Hicks has gone undefeated this spring in the 800 meter run with a most recent victory and season best performance of 2:14.01 at the MileStat.com Elite Track Classic. In her latest race, Hicks nearly joined the sub five minute club in the 1600 meter run as a runner-up at the Nike Spring Invite with a time of 5:01. Hicks returns back to Sports Backers Stadium this Friday as the top seed in the 800 meter run at the Southern Track Classic, which she hopes to run closer her to season goal of a 2:10.
