  • Justin Hunter wins the USATF Junior Nationals long jump title with 25-10.75 mark!

Justin Hunter (pictured by Ryan Kelly) bettered his state record and US leading mark in the long jump by winning the USATF Junionr Nationals title in the long jump with a final attempt and 0.2 wind legal mark of 25'10.75". The recent graduate of Ocean Lakes High School in Virginia Beach started off the competition with a initial mark of 24'9.75", which still would have placed him first ahead of eventual runner-up Carlton Lavong from Pennsylvania (24'7.25"). His top two finish and US #18 all-time performance qualifies Hunter to compete on the World Juniors team, which will be in competition July 19th through July 25th in Moncton, Canada. Hunter is the first high school boys champion from Virginia in the meet since Mike Morrison (pole vault) back in 2005 and joins Keith Holley, who previously was the only USATF Junionr National long jump prep champion from Virginia back in 1988 with a mark of 25'5.25"  The University of Tennessee bound football and track star will compete tomorrow afternoon in the triple jump.

  • Western Branch girls invited to inaugural Nike Track Nationals!

All photos by John Herzog   It took several years for a Virginia school to qualify to compete for the Nike Cross Nationals in the fall, but it did not take long for the state to send a team to Oregon for the first ever Nike Track Nationals to be held on July 2nd at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The Western Branch girls will be the lone representative for the Southeast region girls as their composite team scoring based on performances during the 2010 outdoor season ascened them to the top of the region rankings to be selected. With the likes of state champion caliber athletes Keilah Tyson, Desmonae Gray, and Sydni Cobb along with formidable relays, the Group AAA state indoor and outdoor champions will represent the state of Virginia in two weeks at the University of Oregon's facility.

Blacksburg girls set DMR national record! 11:31.26 They came in hoping to win – hoping. The national record seemed possible but not even Joanna Stevens’ best-case scenario worked out this good.   The Blacksburg (Va.) senior didn’t anticipate taking the stick all alone on the anchor lap and realizing that with a lap left, she would be racing the clock to become the fastest distance medley relay in nation history (Photo by Victah Sailer). Kathleen Stevens (3:31.56), Sarah Dorrell (58.97), Hannah Brown (2:12.61) and Joanna Stevens (4:48.14) won the DMR at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in 11:31.26 Saturday, breaking Warwick Valley’s 2008 record of 11:31.81.   Virginia's All-American/Top 6 Finishers on Saturday Girls DMR - Blacksburg - 1st, 11:31.26 *NEW NATIONAL RECORD* Girls High Jump - Chelsea Utley (Green Run) - 2nd, 5'8.50" Girls 4x100 - Western Branch - 4th, 46.79 Girls Long Jump - Nikki Nunn (Manchester) - 4th, 18'6" Boys High Jump - Philip Morris (Glenvar) - 5th, 6'8.75" Boys Long Jump - Renay Ransaw (Hampton) - 5th, 18'6" Boys Shot Put - Isaiah Simmons (Woodbridge) - 6th, 61'2" Girls Mile Run - Kathleen Lautzenheiser (Midlothian) - 6th, 4:52.44 Emerging Elite Girls 200 - Cassandra Jones (Granby) - 5th, 24.82 Emerging Elite Boys 4x400 - Blacksburg - 6th, 3:23.22

  • New Balance Outdoor Nationals Day 2

The state of Virginia had some very noteworthy performances on Friday at the New Balance Nationals including a new state record 4x800 performance by the West Springfield girls (pictured right by Dave Watt)  slipping into the All-American top 6 with their time of 9:03.35 against arguably one of the deepest 4x800 fields in high school history.   Darrell Wesh just missed becoming the first boys champion from Virginia in the meet as he posted one of the fastest performances all-time in state history as a runner-up in the 100 meter dash finals with a 10.42 clocking, while Christal Peterson set a new state record in the 100 meter dash with her 11.55 preliminary performance.   Colin Mearns of Jamestown joined an elite group of past Virginians under 9 minutes in the two mile with an All-American fifth place run of 8:57.42, while Katherine Walker appeared to show little signs of fatigue from her 5K victory last night to take sixth place and All-Americans in the two mile at 10:30.54.   Also earning All-American honors in the championship seeded events were the Western Branch girls in the shuttle hurdles. Henrico junior Stephanie Oleson competely redeemed himself from two previous poor showings in the pole vault to clear a personal best height of 12'8.50" to place fifth and earn All-American honors.   Boys 100 Meter Dash - Darrell Wesh (Landstown) - 2nd, 10.42 Girls Shuttle Hurdles Relay - Western Branch - 2nd, 1:02.58 Boys 2Mile Run - Colin Mearns (Jamestown) - 5th, 8:57.42 Girls Pole Vault - Stephanie Oleson (Henrico) - 5th, 12'8.25" Girls 100 Meter Dash - Christal Peterson (Phoebus) - 6th, 11.67 (11.55 prelims *NEW STATE RECORD*) Girls 4x800 Meter Relay - West Springfield - 6th, 9:03.35 *NEW STATE RECORD* Girls 2Mile Run - Katherine Walker (Brooke Point) - 6th, 10:30.54 Emerging Elite Boys 4x200 Champions - James Robinson 1:30.52 Emerging Elite Boys 400 - Anthony Finney (Varina) - 2nd, 48.63 Emerging Elite Girls 4x800 - Western Albemarle - 2nd, 9:25.75 Emerging Elite Boys 2Mile - Kevin Bennert (Woodberry Forest) - 2nd, 9:23.62 Emerging Elite Girls 100 - Siobhan Ford-Holland (Bethel) - 3rd, 12.25 Emerging Elite Girls 4x800 - Forest Park - 3rd, 9:28.78 Emerging Elite Boys 100 - Roderque Gray (Brooke Point) - 4th, 10.88 Emerging Elite Boys 2Mile - Jack Jasper (Herndon) - 4th, 9:24.94 Emerging Elite Boys Mile - Brian Gorwtz (Grafton) 5th, 4:19.76

  • Katherine Walker wins New Balance Nationals 5K title!

Brooke Point senior Katherine Walker completed a late blooming and breakthrough final season of high school in grand fashion on the national stage by winning the girls 5000 meter run at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, North Carolina. Walker entered the race with a personal best of 18:06 5K from cross country, but left the race with a huge PR of 16:57 to pull away from Foot Locker All-American Wesley Frazier (16:59) of North Carolina in the end. Also performing well in the event from Virginia with significant PR drops were Northside junior Erin Wheeler winning the slower section in 18:14, while Western Albemarle junior Mattie Webb just missed a sub 18 minute performance in eight place in the fast section at 18:00.88.   Logan Moore, a freshmen at Riverheads High School, won the freshmen 400 title in a time of 50.68 to drop sixth tenths of a second from his previous PR of 51.23. • Athlete Spotlight: Quintin Fulgham

Photo by John Herzog   Justin Hunter is without a doubt the favorite in all three jumping events for this weekend's VHSL Group AAA State Championships as he also attempts to help Ocean Lakes for the first state title, but none of the titles will be given to him without a challenge. Hunter should especially see a challenge in the long jump from Thomas Dale senior Quintin Fulgham who appears to be stepping up at the right time in both the jumps and the sprints after winning four individual titles at the Central Region Championships. • Athlete Spotlight: Clare Moretz

Madison County junior Clare Moretz is the defending Group A state champion in the 1600 meter run and returns this weekend to Radford University to not only go for a second straight title in the 1600 but also an 800 title as well as the top seed in that event. Moretz has been All-State in cross country all three years of high school including a runner-up finish this past November and will be looking forward to the cross country soon after the track season is over to prepare for a state title run in the fall. Despite doing very little training during the indoor season and competing in few big invitationals against top competition, Moretz has lowered her track times this spring to a recent 5:13 school and regional meet record 1600 meter performance as well as posting a 2:24 800 and 11:23 3200 meter performances during the 2010 outdoor season. • Athlete Spotlight: Montasia Golden

Lee-Davis junior Montasia Golden (pictured left by John Herzog) started out high school with some big shoes and expectations to fill when she took over the role as the top point scorer for the track team and drew quick comparisons at the time to the recently graduated multi-event star Rachel Butler. There is good reason to see why the comparisons appeared as Golden does many of the same events which Butler excelled in such as the jumps and hurdles. During this past year Golden has become not the next Rachel Butler, but instead established herself and her own name with a state title indoors in the triple jump and enters this weekend's Group AAA State Championships in Richmond as one of the top seeds in both hurdle events fresh off two all-time best performances at the regional meet. A stress fracture injury prevented her from competing early in the outdoor season as well as held her out entirely from taking any attempts at the triple jump, but with her focus completely on the hurdles she may get a worthy consolation prize for being unable to go for an outdoor title in the triple jump. • Athlete Spotlight: Torie Cunningham

In last year's Group AAA state meet finals of the girls 100 meter dash, there was only one girl competing not from an Eastern Region school. Meadowbrook sophomore Torie Cunningham (pictured above by John Herzog) finished in eighth and last place in the 100 finals in her first state meet in her first full season of high school. It turns out that she was just scratching the surface as she returns this year to state meet as a much stronger and faster runner ready to be much more competitive with the Eastern Region's fastest. Cunningham was named Runner of the Meet at the Central Region Championships last week at Sports Backers Stadium in posting some of the fastest times in meet's history with her personal best clockings of 11.94 in the 100 meter dash and 24.66 in the 200 meter dash. Cunningham also runs second leg on one of the fastest 4x100 meter relays to come out of the region in recent history. Read more for interview with Cunningham...

Preview for the running events at the 2010 VHSL Group AA State Championships. Several races at this year's state meet will be historically some of the best ever in meet's history in terms of depth such as nine girls under 11 minutes in the 3200 meter run, six girls under 12 seconds in the 100 meter dash, and a large pack of boys relays ready to roll under 8 minutes in the 4x800 and 3:20 in the 4x400.  It has been seven years since the state meet was last held at Sports Backers Stadium and the ability for athletes to wear quarter inch spikes will not be the only factor to help potentially produce for many performances to rank among the fastest all-time in state meet history. Several athletes are capable of winning a pair of individual titles on the track including Darrell Wesh (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) in the boys 100 and 200 meter dash.
