Isaiah Simmons of Woodbridge earlier this winter competed in an All-Comers meet at the Prince George County Sports & Learning Complex and recorded a huge VA #2 all-time mark of 66'3.25" in the shot put. However, the performance was not verified with results until last week when results were posted on the Potomac Valley Track club website. Simmons further verified that performance with another big throw and this time in a sanctioned high school meet on Saturday at the St. Christopher's Invitational. The defending Group AAA state indoor and outdoor champion rocked the fieldhouse at St. Christopher's with a US #3 mark of 65'0.50". His two big marks this indoor season put him in contention to become the greatest shot put thrower ever in Virginia High School history. Video of Simmons' 65'0.50" Shot

The fast section of the boys 3200 meter run at Virginia Tech gathered all the big distance stars of Group AA into one race with Blacksburg's George Carter, Grafton's Kyle King, Skyline's Thomas Madden, and Western Albemarle's Derek Armstrong. Add in Foot Locker finalist and Group AAA state cross country runner-up Silas Frantz of Douglas Freeman and Friday's final event of the day had all the makings for a 16 lap thriller at Rector Fieldhouse. All five runners either lead portions of the race or found themselves right in the hunt until late when George Carter and Silas Frantz countered a breakway move by Madden into the last 800 meters, which Carter proved to have the jets at the end to turn it on for a US leading performance of 9:17.84. (Photo by Brandon Miles)
The girls 3200 meter run at Tech did not have as many runners in contention for the win during the race with Sherando's Krista Deceault and Western Albemarle's Mattie Webb separating early to press each other to big PR's well under 11 minutes with winner Webb at a US #4 10:44.58 and DeCeault (who doubled from the 4x800 less than an hour before) as close runner-up at US #5 10:45.19. Webb won MileStat.com's most improved runner of the year award after going from a 20 minute 5K runner to a Foot Locker finalist in 12 months, but Deceault might be hot on her heels for a similar honor with her recent huge improvements this year as a senior. Decault's US top 5 time on Friday is 41 seconds faster than her junior year best in the 3200 meter run. (Photo by Andrew Kicinski)
Blackburg sophomore Alyn Carr (pictured above by Brandon Miles) is certainly moving herself into elite company among Group AA sprinters all-time with her US #11 7.09 clocking in the prelims at Virginia Tech. Carr's preliminary time sets a new Virginia Group AA indoor record in the event as previous fastest times for the classification were 7.10 by Kisha Garrick of Caroline in 2006 and 7.15 by Patrice Potts of Brunswick in 2005. As only a tenth grader, Carr has plenty of opportunities to become the first Group AA sprinter under 7.00 before her high school career is over. Meanwhile, the Blacksburg girls also excelled in the area which they are known for by winning the 4x800 meter relay in US #5 time of 9:27.23 with key legs from their individual stars Hannah Brown on second leg to put them in position and Sarah Dorrell on anchor to pull away from the field.
Christiansburg High School starred in the field events for the state of Virginia with two event champions in Travis Hudson (pictured above by Andrew Kicinski) clearing a US #11 height of 6'7" in the high jump, while Rochelle Evans won another head-to-head matchup with her Group AA rival Daquaa Scott of Robert E. Lee in the shot put with a US #15 mark of 41'9.25". Hudson is using this season as a form of redemption in a second chance after being suspended from the team during the outdoor season and possible be in the running again for an All-American position in the pentathlon at the indoor nationals, while Evans and Scott is developing into one of the best rivalries in the sport this year in Virginia.
After clearing 12'3" and setting a new meet record in the pole vault, Atlee senior Cameron Overstreet set her sights on another record in attempting to break her recently established Virginia high school indoor state record of 12'9" in raising the bar next to a height of 12'10". Overstreet had three decent and consistent attempts at a new state record height, but was unable to clear. However, her unsuccessful attempts indicate that at least an inch PR and likely 13 foot territory are coming in the near future this indoor season. (Photo by Andrew Kicinski)
The Southeast Raleigh (NC) senior Dannielle Davis has certainly lived up to following in her older brother and national indoor hurdles record holder Wayne Davis' footsteps. In Friday's prelims at Virginia Tech, Davis (pictured above by Andrew Kicinski) bettered her own US #2 time in the 55 meter hurdles with a 7.95 clocking and she will going after the 7.90 time, which currently stands as the nation's best, in Saturday's finals.
Potomac High School (MD) junior Ronald Darby (pictured above by Andrew Kicinski) looked impressive in leaving behind the competition in his preliminary heat of the 55 meter dash at Virginia Tech. The current US leader in the event with his 6.28 performance at the Hispanic Games earlier this month, Darby's 6.36 prelims time is still faster than the US #2 performer in the event and he will look to dip under 6.30 again in Saturday's finals in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Live and on-site at Virginia Tech's Rector Fieldhouse in Blacksburg for this weekend's Virginia Tech High School Invitational. Recent snowfalls and winter storms over the past few days has affected the attendance for some teams in Northern Virginia and Maryland from at least traveling and attending the first day of events and for some schools, shut down from coming to both days. We'll attempt to provide updates of the event winners and pics throughout the meet. Race videos will not be uploaded until overnight Saturday into Sunday, while race photos from Andrew Kicinski will be uploaded a few hours after completion of each day of events.

MileStat.com will be providing on-site coverage at this weekend's two major invitationals with photos and videos from the St. Christopher's Invitational in Richmond and Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg. The rare opportunity for Virginia high school athletes to race on a fast 200 meter banked track at Virginia Tech annually leads to many state leading, US top 10 and national leading performances. Quite a few of the state's best will not be in Blacksburg this weekend and instead competing at the two day St. Christopher's Invitational including big name athletes such as Keilah Tyson, Isaiah Simmons, Shantell Bingham, Jeremy Greenwald, Roderque Gray, and Anna Spiers. A loaded mile field is set for Virginia Tech with more than a handful of runners capable of running under 5 minutes for girls and under 4:20 for boys. The sprints and field events will be multi-state competitive with many of Maryland and North Carolina's best looking to contend for top times and first place finishes in Blacksburg.

Top 10 private school boys' rankings for each event as of January 26th. Another St. Christopher's vs. Fork Union showdown is setting up for the VISAA State Championships and Prep League Championships next month. Much of the success for the St. Christopher's squad is attributed to senior Ben Constable (pictured above) and their relays. Constable is the private school leading performer right now in the 500 (1:07.73) and 1000 (2:34.70), while he is also a member of the 4x400 and 4x800 relays which also lead the private school ranks at 3:35 and 8:05 respectively along with their 4x200 (1:33.84).
Top 10 private school girls' rankings for each event as of January 26th. A native from North Carolina, but attending boarding school at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Shantell Bingham (pictured above by John Herzog) has been undefeated this season in the 55 meter hurdles. She ranks among one of the state's best with a season best time of 8.21 and recently clocked a 7.0 hand held time in 55 meter hurdles at a home meet last Friday. A defending state champion indoors and outdoors in the hurdles, Bingham is in a distinct class of her own against other private school hurdlers in Virginia with a huge margin for an 8 to 10 second race of 1.02 seconds existing between Bingham and the next fastest hurdler.
Entry list for the 2011 St. Christopher's Invitational to be held Friday & Saturday, January 28th & 29th at St. Christopher's School in Richmond, VA. MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage.
St. Christopher's Invitational - Entry List
A fairly low-key weekend in Virginia despite being late in the invitational season especially since there was no weekend invitational held at Boo Williams Sportsplex to showcase the Eastern Region and Tidewater talent. Highlights below of some of the few major meets held this past weekend in Virginia.
East Coast Invitational - At the 52nd annual East Coast Invitational (oldest actively run indoor meet in Virginia), Cosby junior Megan Moye defeats Foot Locker finalist Mattie Webb of Western Albemarle by six seconds in the 1600 meter run posting a great time of 5:06 on the Arthur Ashe Center's 145 meter spikeless track surface to break Sarah Bowman's 5:11 meet record from 2005. Hayfield's Elbert Maxwell, who cleared a VA #2 height of 6'7" last weekend at Episcopal, came down to Richmond and nearly matched that performance with a clearance of 6'6" to win the high jump at the East Coast Invite.
New Balance Games - Lake Braddock sophomore and Foot Locker finalist Sophie Chase finished 6th in the invitational mile race, but her time of 5:03.88 converts to a state leading time for 1600 meters by two seconds. Both Lake Braddock and West Potomac brought 4x800 and 4x400 meter relays to New York City with each school's 4x800 meter relay for girls proving themselves as expected to be two of the state's fastest this season with the West Potomac placing third in a state best time of 9:27.13, while Lake Braddock finished two places and eight seconds back in fifth place at 9:35.32. The Northern Region had several other schools competing at the Armory as well including Centreville and South County with the Centreville boys running surprisingly very competitive and nearly winning the 4x800 meter relay with the state's fastest time of 8:03.77 for second place, while South County girls likewise placed second against some of New York's best in the 4x400 with a time of 4:01.53.
St. Christopher's Indoor Meet #5 - Lee-Davis senior Cody Snyder continued his strong indoor season of success (4:16 1600, 2:31 1000) and remaining undefeated but not without a tough and close race from his Central Region rival in Brayden Burleigh of Midlothian. Snyder edged Burleigh out by the narrowest of margins in the 1000 meter run with Snyder the winner at 2:33.45 and Burleigh in second at 2:33.46. Returning Virginia 3A indoor state champion Montasia Golden of Lee-Davis was a double winner in the jumps with marks of 18'1.75" in the long jump and 37'8.50" in the triple jump. St. Catherine's senior Taylor Clevinger followed up her 3:01 PR run in the 1000 last weekend with a 1:17.54 500 PR in a spirited race with 1600 meter winner Marie Johnston (5:15.86) of Midlothian in second under 1:18 as well at 1:17.77. The St. Christopher's boys proved that the relays are the cornerstone of this year's squad showing range in winning the 4x200 (1:33.84) and 4x800 (8:05.48) with their time in the 4x800 being the fastest of the season in Virginia. St. Christopher's 4x800 meter relay leg Ben Constable later won the 500 in a time of 1:07.73. Tiel Westbrook of Lee-Davis dropped 8 seconds in three weeks from her race at CNU in the 1000 with a state automatic qualifier of 3:03.78.
Mid-Area Track Classic - Atlee pole vaulters Cameron Overstreet and Chris Pillow continue to set the bar high for themselves this season and had another high flying day in the pole vault in the Friday evening invitational at Liberty University. Consistency by both this season has been commendable in the event with new Virginia state indoor record holder Overstreet again well over 12 feet at 12'3" on Friday, while VA #3 indoor all-time performer Pillow stayed over 15 feet as well at 15'6". Last spring's surprise VA 3A outdoor 110 meter hurdles champion Vincent Wyatt of William Fleming made his indoor season debut with a 7.63 victory in the 55 meter hurdles. Blacksburg girls had their top 2 distance runners back racing for the first time in 2011 with strong returns for Sarah Dorrell winning the 1000 in 3:00.05 and Hannah Brown edging out Cave Spring freshmen Katie Fortner (5:11) in the 1600 with a 5:09 performance. Blacksburg also had another individual champion in Alyn Carr, who won two sprint races in the 55 (7.26) and 300 (42.7) as well as helped the Blacksburg girls take first in the 4x200 as well at 1:48.56. A deep boys 1000 with 5 under 2:40 as Blacksburg senior George Carter followed up an easy 4:20 win in the 1600 with 2:34 victory in the 1000. Two Group AA jumpers went over 45 feet in the triple jump and should be in the mix for state titles later this season with Heritage's Xavier Calloway at 45'6.75" and Charlottesville's David Johnson at 45'4.25".
In case you missed it, below are three of the top videos from last weekend's meets including a state indoor record 12'9" clearance by Cameron Overstreet in the pole vault, a VA #3 indoor all-time clearance of 16'0" by her Atlee teammate Chris Pillow in the pole vault, and Grassfield senior Jeremy Greenwald clocking the US #1 time of 2:29.76 in the 1000 meter run. All videos were contributed by site visitors. Pull out your video cameras this upcoming weekend and future meets to submit your footage to MileStat.com to possibly be featured as a video of the week!

Revised estimated schedule of events for Saturday's East Coast Invitational at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. The meet will proceed on a rolling schedule and try go ahead of this estimated schedule.
The top 8 high school boys' performer in each indoor event in the state of Virginia as of January 20th. Somewhat overshadowed by Cody Snyder's 4:16 1600 and George Carter's 2:30 100 at the Liberty Invitational, Skyline sophomore Thomas Madden (pictured above by Andrew Kicinski) put together an impressive run and state leading performance in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:29.05. Madden just missed winning his first state title during the fall in cross country, but may be in great position to go for a Group AA state crown in the 3200 indoors.
The top 8 high school girls' performer in each indoor event in the state of Virginia as of January 20th. Landstown sophomore Leah Lott (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) opened up her 2011 season last week in a regular season district meet at Boo Williams clocking a significant personal best time of 8.19 to make her the new state leader in the 55 meter hurdles. As a freshmen last year, Lott had a solid best time of 8.77 but failed to qualify for the state indoor championships in the hurdles. However, she did qualify for the state outdoor championships and made the finals of the 100 meter hurdles with a sixth place finish. She dipped well under 15 seconds in the 100 hurdles during the AAU summer track season with an impressive ninth grade performance of 14.68 to springboard her into her sophomore year.
In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Ahmed Bile of Annandale High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Virginia Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year. The 6-foot-3 junior raced to the Class AAA individual state championship this past season with a time of 15:27.00. Bile placed fourth at the Foot Locker South Regional championships in 15:02.00 and took 14th at the national Foot Locker Cross Country Championships in 15:33.00, earning All-American status in the process. He captured first place at the Northern Region Championships and finished fourth at the Patriot District Championships this past fall.

Atlee's Marques Atkinson regained his US #1 in the 500 which he lost earlier last week with another drop in time at St. Christopher's. Atkinson is knocking on the door of becoming a VA all-time top 25 performer in the event (1:04.43 cut-off) after his 1:04.83 performance in a quad meet at St. Chris this past Saturday.
Quite a historic meet for the Atlee pole vaulters and their vault coach Kyle Bishop with two of his athletes in Chris Pillow and Cameron Overstreet successfully clearing themselves as all-time greats in the event. Pillow's 16 foot clearance ties him for #3 all-time in Virginia high school state indoor history behind only Great Bridge High greats Mike Morrison and Lawrence Johnson, while Overstreet officially becomes the Virginia state indoor pole vault record holder with her personal best clearance of 12'9".

Chris Pillow's 16 foot clearance in the pole vault was one of three national caliber and state leading performances by Atlee athletes at St. Christopher's on Saturday with girls' pole vaulter Cameron Overstreet reaching a new personal best height as well at 12'9", while Marques Atkinson reclaimed his US #1 in the 500 meter dash breaking 65 seconds with his 1:04.81 performance. Boo Williams Sportsplex has been the home of national and state leading performances each weekend in the sprints, jumps, and hurdles but it was the distance performances which stood out on Saturday at the Suffolk Stars Invitational with Princess Anne's Lizzie Cornell winning the 1600 in a state best time of 5:04, while Grassfield senior Jeremy Greenwald became the first runner in the state to break 2:30 in the 1000 this indoor season with his US #1 2:29.76 win in Hampton. A significant PR of 6 seconds in the event for the Eastern Region cross country champion Greenwald. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)

The Peninsula District boys have been overshadowed and honestly dominated in track by their counterparts from the other side of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel over the past few years. However, the momentum may be shifting back across the tunnel to the Peninsula with individual stars such as Heritage's Daniel McFadden and Woodside's Malique Key. In Friday's events at the Suffolk Stars Invitational, McFadden showed his US #1 7.37 performance a few weeks ago at the New York Armory was not a one-time deal as he nearly matched that performance with a 7.39 clocking and win against one of his top challengers for the state title in Lakeland's JaQuan Demiel. Likewise for Key, the Woodside short sprinter needed to show his early season 6.45 55 meter dash clocking in a small district meet was not a timing malfunction but instead a result of his own speed. Key beat that time and the tough finals competition on Friday in tying Justin Burke as the co-state leader in the 55 meter dash at 6.43.
The Western Branch girls continued rolling through the competition this season on the first day of the Suffolk Stars Invitational with their top hurdler Desmonae Gray dropping her season best time to 8.23 in the 55 meter hurdles, Taranisha Taylor winning the 55 meter dash in a US top 25 all-time performance of 7.04, and Keilah Tyson improving to a state best height of 5'8" in the high jump.

While they are from different parts of the state and separated by a roughly 4 hour drive, Cody Snyder and George Carter have certainly been competing with another since their freshmen year whether from rare head to head races or more often simply comparing times from different meets as they were the top two fastest freshmen milers in the state three years ago. In their first head to head match-up on the track as seniors, they put on a great show and race for spectators after a long day of competition on Friday at the Liberty Flames High School Invitational. Snyder opened up the first 400 meters leading the field through 65 seconds, but Carter made a move mid way through to surge through a slowing pace as the pair broke away from the field. Snyder ran off his shoulder until making a move into the first turn of the bell lap and Carter attempted to repel a pass from Snyder on the backstretch. However, Snyder proved to have too much finishing speed as he pulled away in the last 150 meters for a personal best and one of the nation's fastest flat track 1600 meter performances at 4:16.92. Snyder finished just off personal best by a few tenths of a second with his runner-up performance at 4:18.61.
Christiansburg's Travis Hudson tied with several others for the state leading height in the high jump at 6'6" as the only Virginia athlete to win one of the four field events contested on Friday at Liberty University. The state of North Carolina had winners in the other three field events (girls long jump, boys triple jump, girls pole vault).
Stafford sophomore Hannah Lowery separated from Herndon's Carolyn Hennessey and the girls' 1600 meter field for a four second victory with her season best time of 5:09.69.

David Pennesi (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) rolled out two impressive distance performances early in December with his Colonial Forge teammates Brian O'Loughlin and David Klimek in back to back weeks in home polar bear meets. Pennesi ran a 4:25 1600 trailed in by O'Loughlin (4:26) and Klimek (4:27) under 4:30 in a December 2nd polar bear meet then the next week clocked a 9:37 3200 pacing with Klimek (9:38) and O'Loughlin (9:39). The Colonial Forge trio will all be competing actually indoors for the first time this season at Liberty this weekend in some outstanding and deep distance fields along with a potential load up of their 4x800 meter relay, which figures to be one of the state's best this indoor and outdoor season.

A list of the top 10 Northern Region boys performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. Annandale boys are waiting for the return of their state cross country champion and Foot Locker All-American Ahmed Bile to racing action this winter, but the rest of the team has impressed in his break from competition including hurdler John Jenkins. Jenkins (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) has won unpressed so far this season against Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC competition including a recent personal best 7.44 clocking at the Montgomery Invitational. Annandale thrower Joel Hoisington has the region's top mark in the shot put to give the team at least three potentially significant individual point scorers for the indoor state meet between Bile, Jenkins, and himself.

In its 26th year of honoring the nation’s best high school athletes, The Gatorade Company, in collaboration with ESPN RISE, today announced Annie LeHardy of Hidden Valley High School as its 2010-11 Gatorade Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year. LeHardy is the first Gatorade Virginia Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year to be chosen from Hidden Valley High School. The 5-foot-3 senior raced to a the Class AA individual state championship this past season with a course-record time of 17:34.00, leading the Titans to first place as a team. Also the Runner of the Year as named by MileStat.com and the Roanoke Times, LeHardy placed second at the Nike Cross Nationals Southeast Regional championships in 17:24.40, then finished 26th at the Nike Cross Nationals Final in 19:28.50.

An All-State triple jump performer last year in indoor and outdoor as well as a 7th place finisher indoors and 10th place finisher outdoors in national championship competition, Dean won the triple jump at the Southeastern Invitational last weekend with a US #5 and state leading mark of 47'4.50" against one of his top challengers for the individual state title in Rickey Blake of Nansemond River.

While Eastern Region sprinters, hurdlers, and jumpers certainly dominate the state leaderboard and top 10 rankings in the state, Princess Anne's Lizzie Cornell and Ocean Lakes' Audrey Batzel (both pictured above by Brandon Miles) put on a great battle for second place behind a state leading and US #3 performance from Cosby's Megan Moye in the 3200 meter run at CNU. Cornell got out quicker in the first mile, but Batzel reeled her in after a conservative start and began to gap her in the last 800 meters. Cornell was able to come back on her Beach District rival in the final lap with both pushing each other for personal bests. Cornell was second at 11:07 and Batzel was third at 11:09, which are also second and fourth fastest in Group AAA this season.
A list of the top 10 Central Region boys performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. Thomas Dale sophomore Byron Robinson (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) quietly ran a personal best and VA #7 35.82 300 meter time this past weekend at a St. Christopher's Meet. Robinson's performance is a Central Region best and the second fastest time nationally in the 300 dash by an underclassmen (freshmen or sophomore). It should be no surprise that Robinson is enjoying success as a sophomore after a strong freshmen year campaign which included winning the Central Region outdoor 400 meter title with a 48.64 personal best.
A list of the top 10 Central Region girls performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. Mary Allen(pictured above by John Herzog) leads a strong group of John Marshall girls sprinters, which currently has the Central Region's fastest times in the 4x200 (1:47.85) and 4x400 (4:09.56) meter relays. Individually, the John Marshall junior Allen has the region's best performances in the 55 meter dash (7.22) and 300 meter dash (41.46) with senior teammate Breanna Taylor not far behind with Taylor's season bests at 7.31 in the 55 and 41.56 in the 300.
A list of the top 10 Group AA boys performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. Blacksburg's George Carter (pictured above by Andrew Kicinski) is due for his first state championship this winter. He'll have some competition come state meet time with the likes of Grafton's Kyle King and Western Albemarle's Derek Armstrong, but currently has the fastest time in all three distance events of the 1000 (2:32), 1600 (4:22), and 3200 (9:30) in the Group AA classification.
A list of the top 10 Group AA girls performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. Tabb senior Kiara Porter (pictured above by Ryan Kelly) has gotten off to a fast start in the 2010-2011 indoor season as she has been posting fast times on a weekly basis against top Group AAA Eastern Region competition in the sprints. At the Group AA State Meet, Porter will not have to face as much speed and talent as she does regularly at the Boo Williams Sportsplex as she is established herself early as a double state title favorite in the 55 meter dash (7.17) and 300 meter dash (40.16) with her recent personal best wins at the CNU Showcase. Porter has a teammate in Julia Aymonin who is the Group AA 500 meter leader at 1:17.91 and when paired up with Porter have helped make the Tabb girls the swiftest 4x200 (1:49) and 4x400 (4:10) in Group AA this season.
A list of the top 10 private school performers in each event (links to full rankings included) through January 12th. The Polish pipeline continues to bring in talented middle distance runners for the Fork Union Military Academy track program including their most recent import in Michael Idziak (pictured above), who has the fastest private school performances this season so far at 500 (1:08.60), 1000 (2:39.86), and 1600 (4:36.81) meters.

Two US #1 performances on day two at the CNU High School Showcase with First Colonial junior Justin Burke besting all of the times posted on the faster banked track of the New York Armory on a 200 meter flat track in Newport News with an impressive national leading 34.79 performance. Meanwhile, Cody Snyder of Lee-Davis dueled it out with Kyle King of Grafton for 800 meters as the two clipped off laps right around 30 seconds each before Snyder seized the lead into the turn of the bell lap for a US #1 2:31.77 win. Western Branch senior Keilah Tyson just missed breaking the Virginia high school state indoor 55 meter dash record held by Francena McCorory on Friday night at Boo Williams Sportsplex in Hampton. Facing off in the finals of the Southeastern Invitational against her top rival in defending Nike Indoor Nationals 60 dash champion Christal Peterson of Phoebus, Tyson won convincingly with a VA #2 all-time performance of 6.87, which easily ranks her as the fastest in the country currently.
The Western Branch girls might have the greatest depth of hurdlers in state history as shown with their 1-2-3 sweep in the finals of 55 meter hurdles on Friday with all three athletes in Desmonae Gray (8.26), Shamia Lassiter (8.29), and Taranisha Taylor (8.30) impressively posting the top three times this season from the state of Virginia. Gray was not done with edging out a win over her teammates in the hurdles, a national leader in the triple jump for much of last year's indoor season, the returning All-American is back ontop of the national leaderboard after a US #1 leap of 39'9.75" at Boo Williams on Friday evening. Western Branch swept the triple jump with Marcus Dean winning the boys' event with a US #3 mark of 47'4.50".

MileStat.com would like to really show its support for Maggie Walker coach Jim Holdren in his comeback from a stroke and the East Coast Invitational by helping to promote and recruit a strong 1600 meter field for the East Coast Invitational to be hosted Saturday, Janury 22nd at the Arthur Ashe Center in Richmond. The Ashe Center is not the fastest track in the state being only 145 meters (12 laps to a mile) and no spikes allowed, but has an incredible amount of history with a lot of past great high school runners who have raced on the track since the first meets in 1983. There is still a novelty about running "fast Ashe Center times". We'd like to help bring in some of today's great runners to race against history and each other in the 1600 meter run at the East Coast Invitational. If interested in racing in a competitive fast section field of the 1600 meter run at the East Coast Invite in support and appreciation of Coach Holdren, email me at milestat@gmail.com.

Update on Coach Holdren: I visited Coach Holdren today. Holdren is currently at a rehabilitation center in Richmond as he is on the road to recovery doing physical therapy several times a day in re-learning how to walk and regaining his strength. The doctors expect him to make a full recovery if not close to 100% recovery, but the timetable when that happens could vary in length. He's in great spirits and has really enjoyed and appreciated all the coaches, athletes, parents, and friends who have visited, called, emailed, and posted on the site checking on him and wishing him well. The stroke has only slowed him down a little bit though as Coach Holdren has his own little office space setup in his room to continue working and coaching with his computer and printer as he made sure that he got his team entries in for CNU this past weekend. He is hoping to return home by late next week and be available in time to host the East Coast Invitational on January 22nd at the Ashe Center. Area officials and coaches seem to be stepping up to pitch in and help Coach Holdren in running off the longest existing indoor invitational in Virginia with the 52nd annual East Coast Invitational.
In high school football, basketball and many other high school sports, college coaches and recruiters regularly check out various media publications and media websites which attempt to rank the top prospects in the country or within a state. These recruit rankings give the athletes more exposure and make it easier for college coaches and recruits to find who are some of the top high school athletes to try and attract to their school. Why not attempt something similar for track & field in Virginia? MileStat.com will be releasing their own top 10 rankings lists (possible expansion to larger lists) of the most prized recruits within the state of Virginia for each discipline of the sport (sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, throws, pole vault). We will attempt to update our lists periodically throughout the year based on season performances and put together a class of 2012 rankings later this year.

Two of the all-time greats in Virginia high school history in the girls' pole vault will be graduating this spring and prized recruits for any school that they head to with two 12+ foot clearing vaulters in Stephanie Oleson of Henrico and Cameron Overstreet of Atlee. Oleson went 12'8.75" at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals to earn All-American honors with a fifth place finish, while Overstreet has been the top performer so far this season with a state best clearance of 12'7". The two best throws talents in the state of Virginia for girls both reside at Group AA schools between Robert E. Lee's Daquaa Scott and Christiansburg's Rochelle Evans with the top two returning marks from 2010 in both the shot put and discus. Scott held the upperhand over her Group AA rival Evans last year with state titles indoors in the shot put and outdoors in the shot put and discus. Evans' marks would have likely won her state titles in Group AAA last year and likely this year as well. (Photo by John Herzog)

Tony Green had a change of school colors over the summer after moving to Louisa Country from Patrick Henry (Ashland) High School. At Patrick Henry, Green was a surprise state champion indoors from a lower seeded flight in the triple jump. Currently the state leader in the long jump this season at 22'7", Green could become a double state champion in Group AA this winter in both the long jump and triple jump. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)

Desmonae Gray of Western Branch has yet to run in a 55 meter hurdles race this season, but no question that she is the best returning hurdler in the state as her junior year best 55 hurdles time of 8.10 puts her well ahead of the current state leading performance. Her outdoor bests in the 100 (14.20) and 300 (43.41) meter hurdles are the fastest among all returnees in 2011. (Photo by Ryan Kelly)

Annie LeHardy was selected as MileStat.com's cross country runner of the year this past fall and is also considered by the site to be the top distance recruit of the 2011 class. A sub 5 minute miler last spring, the Hidden Valley senior is competing in her first indoor season this winter which she already produced an early season sub 3 minute performance in the 1000 meter run. MileStat.com will start ranking on a weekly basis the top 10 performances from the previous week. The first edition will include performances from the last week of winter break with the results from the Boo Williams Winter Break Invite, F.I.T. Invitational, and CVTF Clinic Invitational. The Western Branch girls showed themselves to be head and shoulders better than the rest in the state currently in the 4x200 winning by four seconds at Boo Williams against a speedy Phoebus squad with a US #2 performance of 1:40.73 and capable of challenging the state record of 1:39.52 (Bethel - 2004) this season, but was it good enough to be the #1 performance of the week? Find out!
