A great competition in the jumps at the Liberty Elite Invitational on Saturday between David Prince of Patrick Henry (Roanoke) and David Johnson of Charlottesville. Prince recorded a huge personal best by 13 inches in the long jump with a VA #2 mark of 23'2", while Johnson was a foot behind in second place at 22'2". A big improvement for Prince, who failed to qualify for the Group AAA state outdoor championships. Johnson's specialty is the triple jump as a returning Group AA state champion, which he shined in again at Liberty University to improve his state leading mark in the event with a US #3 leap of 46'8". Monacan senior Kaila Blackburn broke 11 minutes for the first time for 3200 meters in a duel with Watauga's (NC) Darby Middlebrook (2nd, 10:59) with a US #2 indoors performance of 10:56.74. Region IV outdoor 1600 meter champion Joel Johnston took first in the 1600 at the Liberty Elite meet with a time of 4:28, while Blacksburg junior Nick Link was able pull away from Staunton River's Stuart Robertson (9:40) for the win in the 3200 with a 9:36 clocking. Blacksburg sophomore Kendell Wiles dipped just under 1:20 in the 500 meter dash, while teammate Hannah Brown won the 1000 in 3:06 after getting a workout in by also competing in the 500 before and 300 after the 1000.

Without a doubt, the largest meet so far this season for Virginia athletes, but across the Potomac River at the Prince George County's Sports & Learning Center. The =PR= Holiday Invitational saw 59 national elite performances from Virginia individuals and relays. The Westfield boys and Midlothian girls in particular impressed in relay action. The Westfield boys swept the relays with auto state qualifying times in the 4x400 (3:28.97) and 4x800 (8:04.19) along with a 1:34.28 victory in the 4x200. The Midlothian girls were not far removed from an extended cross country season at the Nike Cross Nationals and showed no problem transitioning to the track with a state leading time of 9:39.37 in the 4x800 meter relay and finished with a 4:06 win in the 4x400. Western Branch girls showed themselves to still be another gear shift ahead of the rest of the state in 4x200 meter relay after a US #2 clocking of 1:42.91 at the All American Track Classic on Thursday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex. Last year's relay for the Lady Bruins set the Virginia high school state record in the event with their 1:38.74 performance at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. This year's quartet appears to be capable of running under 1:40 again on a banked track later this season. Other top performances include Lafayette's Heidi Peterson running a solo 3:05 in the 1000 and 1-2 finish in the hurdles for Western Branch's Taranisha Taylor (8.28) and Shamia Lassiter (8.36). Defending Group AA 55 meter dash state champion Coby Branch of Nottoway opened with a 6.62 clocking and win at Boo Williams. Lafayette sophomore Derek Holdsworth now has the top performance in Group AA at 500 meters with his 1:08.96 performance. Carolyn Brown of Phoebus is one of the state's top freshmen talents so far this season as she followed up running a 40.88 in the 300 this season last weekend with a 7.21 clocking in the 55 meter dash.

First Colonial senior Justin Burke, arguably the state's top returning sprinter, opened his indoor season with a bang at the Beach District Regular Season Meet on Tuesday in Hampton. At the Boo Williams Sportsplex, Burke clocked a US #2 300 meter dash time of 35.59 along with a US #4 clocking of 6.50 in the 55 meter dash in his 2011-2012 indoor season debut. The First Colonial 4x200 also motored to a US #2 time of 1:32.67 with Burke as one of the four legs. Two automatic state qualifying performances were recorded in the boys 1600 meter run between Princess Anne's Matthew Schwartzer (4:25.02) and Kellam's Sean Helmke (4:25.49) going down to the wire to determine the race winner. Cox junior Chenara Lacey's clearance of 5'4" at the Beach District meet is the current state leading performance in the girls' high jump. Salem's Justice Steward posted swift times in both the 55 (7.27) and 300 (42.14) meter dashes.

The Grassfield track team had several of the star performances at the CNU Winter Frolic including Trey Holloway dominating in the finals of the 55 meter hurdles with his state leading 7.48 clocking. Meanwhile, his teammate Vincent Lowe came out of nowhere to win the 55 meter dash in 6.50. Lowe has improved greatly from the spring when he finished 33rd in the 200 meter prelims at the AAA State Meet. Defending Group AAA state shot put champion Kiara Howell of Grassfield opened her season in a big way last week at a Southeastern District regular season meet with a personal best performance of 46'7" and followed that up with her second best mark ever at 44'10" for a victory at CNU.

The sprints and jumps were dominated for the most part by North Carolina athletes at the Liberty Christmas Invitational, while the distance races went to the Virginians. After completing a breakthrough cross country season which included the Group AA state individual title and qualifying individually for the Nike Cross Nationals, Hidden Valley junior Carolyn Bethel came out on fire for her second indoor season by running two personal best times in the 1600 (5:05.23) and 3200 (11:03.25) meter races at Liberty University. Bethel was only a week removed from wrapping up her cross country season in Oregon at NXN.

Impressive show by the Northern Region at the Foot Locker Nationals with all of their region's three representatives in the high school national championship race earning All-American honors with top 15 finishes. Chantilly junior Sean McGorty led the way with a 10th place finish of 15:28. McGorty was following the same path as his mother who raced on back in 1983 as a Foot Locker/Kinney National finalist (22nd place). Trailing only two places and one second behind was a familiar foe in South region teammate Ahmed Bile of Annandale. Competing in his second Foot Locker Nationals, Bile became an All-American once again with a 12th place run of 15:29. Rounding out the group of Virginia boys at Foot Locker Nationals was Skyline junior Thomas Madden, who will be the ninth highest returnee next year if able to qualify again after garnering a 23rd place finish. Lake Braddock junior Sophie Chase capped off her stellar fall of racing with All-American honors in San Diego by placing 11th with a time of 17:44. Meanwhile, Cosby senior Megan Moye just missed a top 15 All-American finish with her 16th place run of 18:01.

Albemarle senior Adam Visokay had one of the best individual races yet by a Virginian in the history of the Nike Cross Nationals with his 10th place finish in a loaded field of the nation's top runners. Only Midlothian's Jason Witt in 2006 with his sixth place finish has placed higher from Virginia at NXN and Visokay arguably ran in a tougher field since the addition and growing popularity of the individual qualifier component of the meet. The 2011 Group AAA 3200 meter state champion Visokay clocked a time of 15:37 on the muddy Portland Meadows 5K course, which was 35 seconds behind the winner Futsum Zeinasellaissie of Indiana. Matthew Schwartzer of Princess Anne (59th, 16:05) and Carolyn Bethel of Hidden Valley (99th, 19:22) also made the trip across the country to Virginia and faired respectably in their national championship appearance.
Meanwhile, the Midlothian girls were making their second Nike Cross Nationals appearance as a full squad with a completely new lineup from their 2006 squad which finished 10th in Oregon. An at-large selection from the Southeast Region, the Midlothian girls ended up placing 19th out of 22 teams as only Kara Dickerson (86th, 19:10) was able to break into a very deep top 100 finishers which saw the Group AA state champion Bethel barely squeak into.

Hampton sophomore Chantel Ray opened the season with a swift 8.07 clocking in the 55 meter hurdles. Ray was the not the only strong opener performance on Friday at the Boo Williams Sportsplex including a 1-2 finish in the 55 meter dash by the Bethel boys Dominic McBride (6.54) and Rashawn Proctor (6.55), while Atlee pulled off a sweep of the 4x800 meter relays. Bethel's Willie Davis notched two wins in the high jump (6'6") and triple jump (44'7"), while Dominion District competitors Alexandria Moseley of Cosby (36'8") and Janae Jones (36'7") of Clover Hill only had an inch of separation around the state automatic mark in the triple jump. More to come after covering day two on Saturday.
