Amira Idris ate a mouthful of sand almost every time she landed in the pit. She picked specks of rock off her cheek and out of her hair. She shook a pile from her shoes.
Things got dirty for Idris on Wednesday at the Virginia AAA Northwest Region championships, but she finished sitting pretty. The Hylton senior won two jumping events and scored in two others at Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover.
"It gets ugly," Idris said. "You have to get down and dirty."
Idris, who turned 18 on Wednesday, bounced between overlapping events. She was seeded fifth in the long jump but won the competition on her third attempt. She hit the board well before getting good elevation and stretching out to 17 feet 4 inches.
Her jump followed her running the 55-meter dash trials and final. She was fourth in 7.37 seconds.
Idris was also solid in the triple jump. She went from second place to first on her final attempt, a leap of 38-3, but only after she was needed on Hylton's 4x200 relay team. The Bulldogs finished fifth in 1:49.92. Forest Park was the winner in 1:48.66.
Idris, who holds a 3.9 GPA, said after her final event that she could no longer feel her legs. Then she took a step back toward the bleachers and winced.
"Ouch," Idris said. "Actually, I can."
