State Qualifying on a 400M Track Instead of a 200M Track

I agree that the conditions of the track change the times a bit, but when all the competetors meet on the indoor track at the actual state meet the best runner will win. But from an individual standpoint, as a high school athlee myself, it doesnt always seem fair. My team has absolutly no polar bear meet on our schedule but instead the majority of our meet are at the Ashe center. I could go on and on about how much i despise the ashe center (i mean eleven laps to a mile! what is that?), and i can honestly say i would take the thirty degree weather over that track. Atleast outside i could have spikes in my shoes and not spin out. Also when i look at the school records the outdoor times for distance events are as much as thirty seconds faster than indoor records. The biggest issue with this problem though is not the problem itself but the fact that there really is NO SOLUTION! So the race at states is for all the marbles and may the fastest runner win.

Im not sure what the big deal with this situation is. I could understand being bothered if the girl in question didnt have the pr's and performances to back up her time. She ran 57 over 400 meters last year. Even though it was outdoors, she did it as a freshman and has had another year of great coaching under her belt. It's not like she came from nowhere and ran a fluke race. She is a legitimate standout who has great range. If she hadnt ever performed at that level I would understand the issue a little better.

In the end, I agree with the arguement that folowed though.......There's got to be a way to forge a relationship with Mason that will benefit all. Thats the real issue. I feel like its another example of colleges being all about the $$$$.

The main thing is that kids get to compete. With lack of tracks and resources Polar Bear meets are all some kids have the opportunity to compete in. The majority of kids will not qualify for the state meet even if it was on a 400 meter indoor down hill track down hill but they can compete, enjoy the team aspect and have fun. I agree with LadyVol in that there are too many variables besides whether the track is indoors or out. I know she has competed on 200 meter banked mondo tracks as well as 160 yard wooden sponge cake banked tracks and 12 lap to mile flat tracks and probably the oversized tracks just as ETSU and she cann tell you they are all different. In Polar Bear meets you might get lucky and have a 55-60 degree day or you might be out there on a sub freezing windy day.

Let the kids qualify where they can and sort it all out at the state meet. Just let the kids compete and have fun. Too many parents fussing about this makes it seem like travel soccer!

And that is the best thing about this whole thing. In the end the ONLY thing that matters is who wins at the state meet not who had the best time during the season. Good luck to all during your championships.
