Eastern Region Meet Coverage MileSplit Staff Feb 18, 2006

MileStat.com was on-site to cover the Eastern Region Meet held February 17th and 18th at CNU\'s Vince Brown Track at the Freeman Center in Newport News. The story of the meet was Francena McCorory running a national leading and US #4 all-time 500 meter clocking of 1:11.97 on the unbanked 200 meter surface. The national record is 1:11.44 held by Devon Williams (set in 2004). McCorory also posted a personal best and US #3 time of 6.86 to win the 55 meter dash to go along with her wins in the 500 and 300 meter dash (38.06). McCorory\'s triple win helped Bethel (75 pts) hold off a serious challenge from Great Bridge (65 pts) to win the regional title by 10 points as both teams were tied heading into the final event in the 4x400 meter relay. The Great Bridge girls were led by two incredible individuals in Janet Brown and Kristy Tobin as Brown won an impressive three field events with the long jump (18\'11\"), triple jump (38\'3.50\"), and shot put (40\'1.50\"). Meanwhile, Tobin anchored a 2:19 split on the winning 4x800 meter relay and completed one of the best distance triples of the year in winning the 1600 (5:03.98) and 1000 (2:56.30) meter races in swift times. The Great Bridge boys (60 pts) took the team title by a 18 point margin over Deep Creek (42 pts). Mike Morrison (15\'6 PV) and Austin Lester\'s (53\'10.50\") wins in the field events as well as a first place finish in the 4x800 meter relay (8:17.92) contributed half of the points needed for Great Bridge to win.
