Additional Information2001 William & Mary Invitational CoverageApologies for mix up on course changes and distances By MileStat.com Staff Saturday, October 6, 2001 WILLIAMSBURG, VA - MileStat.com would like to personally apologize for those that were misled by our information on the site that said the William & Mary Invitational's cross country course was changed. We take full responsibility for this mix up. On a positive note, some excellent performances occurred at the meet dispite a dismal day of weather with constant rain and wind. In the boys "A" race, Thomas Jefferson boys proved to be the dominant team of the field winning with 124 points. Maggie Walker and Albemarle have strong races to take 2nd (139 pts) and Albemarle (176 pts). Despite placing 3 runners in the top 15, #3 ranked Jamestown takes 4th with 181 points as #4 runner Brandon Miles was forced to sit out due to injury. Matt Keally crushed the course record with a spectacular time of 14:44 as he broke away from an early front pack that consisted of Keally, Kippy Keino, and Alex Tatu to win by a 16 second. Taking second was Jamestown's Bryce Ruiz who started off behind in the race, but was able to make up ground to finish with a time of 15:00, which also dipped under the course record of 15:03 which coincidentally set last year by Ruiz. The #9 nationally ranked Jefferson Forest blitzed the field in the "A" race, winning by a substantial margin over the #2 ranked team in the state, Robinson 86-120. Also teams finishing high were the Turner Ashby girls, 4th with 230 points and James River, 5th with 239 points. While the first two finishers went to out of state runners (Nelly Anderson of Cordillera Academy, 18:05 and Heather Laturg of Tri Valley, 18:07), some impressive and surprising performances came from certain Virginia runners. Few expected Selina Sekulic of Ocean Lakes to do as well as she did as she finished 3rd in the race with an amazing time of 18:08. Centreville sophomore Dacia Barr also had a strong race, taking 4th with a time of 18:16. Leading the attack for the Jefferson Forest girls was Shannon Saunders in a time of 18:27 for 5th place. Elite Performances: 67 boys, 84 girls Since the course is 3.05 miles (4920 meters), we will be converting performances to 5K by dividing the actual time by 3.05 then taking the quotient and multiplying it by 3.1 to get their projected 5K times. |
