Colonial Pre-District Meet Coverage Oct 07, 2010

The Colonial District only held a pre-district meet on Wednesday afternoon due to last week's heavy rainfall washing out the previous week's meets to force several tri meets to combine together for one mega weekday race at the district meet course found at Pole Green Park in Mechanicsville, VA. With the exception of district boys' individual favorite Silas Frantz of Douglas Freeman, all of the top runners for every team in the district competed.     The girls' race featured two of the state's top runners this fall in Erica Dobbs of Deep Run and Anna Spiers of Maggie Walker. Spiers had yet to beaten in a race this season, while Dobbs was looking to bounce back from two straight subpar races after a great opener at the Knights Crossing Invite. The end result was two runners, who expect to race again for district and regional titles later this season at Pole Green, dipping under 19 minutes on a fairly challenging 5K course with Dobbs as the winner at 18:45 and Spiers taking runner-up in a race for the first time this season in 18:52. The Maggie Walker girls showed the district title still runs through them by putting three runners ahead of top challenger Mills Godwin's first runner with Spiers, sophomore Rachel Galton (3rd, 19:11) and emerging freshmen runner Daisy Banta (4th, 19:37) for a team score of 35 points. Mills Godwin (2nd, 43 pts) was able to keep the team scoring close despite giving up the first three spots to Maggie Walker by having four of the next five finishers in the race in a 25 second time gap.   Despite not running top runner Frantz (training through the meet), Douglas Freeman boys proved to be too much for pre-season favorite Maggie Walker (2nd, 58 pts) and the rest of the Colonial District squads. A 46 second gap separated their top five runners following the team's top and third overall finisher Ronnie Calkins (3rd, 16:43). Maggie Walker boys still cannot be counted out to surprise and turn it on come championship season as they have done in recent years, especially with Marc Breidenbaugh leading this year's group as the senior held off Freeman's Calkins and Mills Godwin's Dan deNijs (2nd, 16:40) for a 16:37 win.   Complete Results Photo Gallery by Brandon Miles - 1,067 photos by Brandon Miles Race Videos: Boys Race - Girls Race
