It is truly never too early to begin to examine rankings. MileStat took that addage to heart and is previewing what we found is the likely outcome for next year's Outdoor season. Previewed here is both the Boys and Girls Group 1A.
Radford, VA - Maggie Walker, Brunswick, Auburn, and George Wythe all put together great teams and performances to walk away with first ever 1A & 2A State Championships. Complete recap of each competition including many of the winners can be read here.
After all the action it is time to look back at the team title races and see how things played out for these teams that left their venues with the first every state championship in each of their divisions.
Unlike any other classification, this will actually be the first time both of these classifications have a state meet. In indoors this meet was combined due to so few of the schools having indoor teams. But now that we are in the outdoor season, the participation numbers and competitor numbers are way up and ready to produce some impressive times and performances.
Group A virtual meet rankings including top 8 in each event and team scores based on performances in the MileStat.com database as of May 10th. Narrow margins separate the top teams in Group A currently with a one point edge for the Stonewall Jackson boys over George Wythe as well as for the James River girls over Strasburg. Strasburg has two individuals who could rack up a lot of points by themselves in state competition between distance runner Katlyn Ayers and thrower Taylor Cockerille. The Christopher Newport University recruit Cockerille launched a personal best mark of 128'8" in the discus at the Falcon Track Classic last Friday night.
The first true weekend of racing action for high schoolers kicked off with several in-state invitationals with plenty of top teams and individuals squaring off with one another in early season contests.
