Salute to Seniors series article of Kellam distance runner Billy Boros. A late arrival to the sport (joined as a sophomore to get in shape for soccer), Boros made up ground quickly in his senior year to become arguably the top distance runner in the Eastern Region and one of the top tier runners in the state of Virginia. Boros won a total of four Eastern Region titles in cross country, indoor (1600m), and outdoor (1600/3200) during his senior year and posted a swift collection of new PR's including 1:55 in the 800, 2:32 in the 1000, 4:16 in the 1600, and 9:27 in the 3200. Boros earned his first All-State individual honor with a third place 4:18 finish in the VHSL Group AAA State Indoor Championship meet in Hampton, but was denied a second All-State honor in outdoor when he was tripped on the third lap of the fast section 1600 in state outdoor meet in Newport News. Boros moves onto North Florida in the fall on a scholarship to run cross country and track.

Interview with Kellam distance runner Billy Boros

What was your most memorable race?
My most memorable race would have to be the regional cross country meet of my senior year. Winning a regional title in cross country was a pretty big deal for me and I really enjoyed all the attention from it. Also indoor states this year when I ran 4:18 (in the 1600) and got third.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
I would say the toughest competition I had would be from Matthew Novak of Deep Run. This year, we raced each other frequently and I had the upper hand for almost all of indoor, but in outdoor he started beating me. I always enjoyed racing him because I knew it would be a tough race to win and a fast time.

What was your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment would be regional indoors this year in the 1000. My personal record going into that race was 2:34. I was going to double. I ran the 1600 in 4:20 and I felt pretty good for doubling back. I took the race out pretty fast and we went through the 800 at 1:58 so I was pretty sure I was going to have a PR. Then with about 20 meters left, I lost the race. My time ended up being 2:32. Even though I did lose the race I still count it as one of my biggest accomplishments because throughout the Eastern Region's history of the 1600/1000 double, only 5 other guys have had faster times (according to MileStat.com database).

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I would have defiinitely changed my attitude and my approach to the sport when I first started out. My sophomore year was my first year of running and I did it only to stay in shape for soccer. I really wish I could take back the goofing around I did my first year but I can't now. Now all I can do is learn from my past mistakes and better myself from them

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
My biggest obstacle I had to overcome would be districts of my junior year. I had got in some trouble at home and my parents didn't let me run at districts. That was a big speed bump for me because I really wanted to win my first district title and I didn't get the chance too. But like I already said I learn from past mistakes and became an even better person from them.

What will you miss the most?
I will miss all the people I race and all the competition. I love running so much and it gives me something to wake up and look forward to every day. High school running is so much different than any other level because you can get so much appreciation of the sport from fellow students at school and it feels good to be someone people look up to.

What advice would you give younger athletes?
I would tell all younger kids who are new and inexperienced to the sport to take it seriously. LISTEN to what your coach tells you. Thats why they are your coach. Don't complain during speed workouts they only benefit you! All the miles and a little speed, it pays off trust me. I went from 4:50 my sophomore year to 4:16 my senior year because I listened to my coach.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
My coach has helped me tremendously. He has coached the sport for 30+ years. He has a whole lot of experience and has coached some amazing runners. He is the MAIN reason I am going to college. If I hadn't of started running I wouldn't be where I am as a person and athlete I am today. I got really lucky to have as good of a coach as him.

What are your college plans?
I am running cross country and track at the University of North Florida.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
I would like to thank my coach first off, my parents for all the support, and YOU Mr. Miles. I wouldn't being doing this article if it wasn't for you. I really can not thank you enough for everything you've done for this website. I can't wait to look back 10 years from now all the videos and pictures I'm in on your website.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I freaking love running and I use to be addicted to Call of Duty.
