Nelson County had both of the individual race winners at the Eastern Mennonite Invitational just outside of Harrisonburg on Saturday with James Ballowe able to pull away from Charlottesville junior Riley Covert (17:06) for a 17:03 victory in the boys' race, while teammate Ramona Bryant also won by a 3 point margin in the girls' race over Central (Woodstock) sophomore Lexi Keller (21:03) as she crossed the line first at 21 minutes flat. Both Ballowe and Bryant expect to compete for high state meet finishes in the Group 2A classification later this fall at Great Meadow.

Both Covert and Kiley nearly won both individual and team titles on the Peakview course at Burtner Farms in Penn Laird, Virginia as they led their squads to team titles. The Charlottsville boys (84 pts) had two of the top 3 finishers in Covert and senior Malloy Owen (3rd, 17:31) to front load on the runners-up Strasburg and the rest of the field for a first place team trophy. The Central girls of Woodstock had their top four runners among the top 20 places with Keller, Heather Landes (10th, 21:44), Bethany Neri (17th, 22:08), and Elsa Garcia (19th, 22:25) to help them secure the team title at the Eastern Mennonite Invite over Warren County (2nd, 108 pts).
