Holdsworth 800m Champion! Alcorta 10:08c! VA Brooks PR Coverage Central

It is not quite XC season yet! Thanks to Brooks, a select few high school athletes get one more time to PR and achieve those goals they set out to do four years ago. This year Virginia will have five competitors competing and chasing that ultimate goal. Learn about them and stay up to date with all that happens here.

VA Competitors Seeking PR's

Ricky Morgan

400m Dash

Forest Park  (2014)

Ricky is currently seeded 6th with his personal best time of 46.67 in the 400. His time ranks him 6th amongst competitors and only .5 seconds off of the top seed in the field. Ricky will be very hungry for a PR this week as he comes from New Balance Outdoor Nationals and the VHSL Group 6A State Championships where he did not achieve up to the level he expects himself to be at. Ricky will be running for the University of Southern California next spring and looking to follow in the foot steps of the greats such as Bryshawn Nellum, but his quest starts at Brooks.

Derek Holdsworth

800m Run

Lafayette (2014)

Derek, who was the New Balance Indoor National Champion flies out to Seattle with one thing on his mind, victory. Derek led nearly the entire race as NBON but said he did not understand why he was not mentally there in the home stretch and that he didn't have the right mindset. He ended up running 1:49.36 in that fourth place finish at nationals, not too bad for not thinking it was a good race. Derek will look to change that this week by not only having a great meet physically but mentally as well. This weather will be much more conducive to doing so in an event such as the 800. He is ranked second amongst his competitors, though he is seeded sixth, and has arguably the best foot speed amongst him competitiors. To be honest, I wouldn't be shocked to see him start for blocks... and he did run the anchor on Lafayette's Penn Relays 4x100.

Chantel Ray

100m Hurdles

Hampton (2014)

Last week was when it was supposed to happen. Chantel Ray had been training all season to finally break the Va State Record in the 100 hurdles. She is just .12 off of it and finally faced some competition at Nationals to do it. Though she faced tough competition that could have led her to the record, she clipped the 8th hurdle and went down. Lucky for her she has one more shot to get it. With Dior Hall in this race, who has gone 13.09 opposed to Ray's 13.42 VA #2 All-time, she will definitely have some competition to pull her through and make her go all-out. She is not only seeking a PR at this invitational but legitimately seeking a state record.

Caroline Alcorta

2 Mile Run

West Springfield (2014)

Caroline has waited all season, and I really mean all season, to finally face some competition that will push her. She is just nine seconds off of the Va State Record with her PR of 10:12. She is ranked 10th in the country and has ran away from all her competition this outdoor season. She is a perfect 9 for 9 this outdoor season in her open races showing just how dominant she has been. She was the 6A State Champion at both the 3200 and 1600 distance. She would have faced some great competition at New Balance Outdoor Nationals but opted out of that to focus on the team aspect of the sport and run on West Springfield's DMR and 4x800. It was a wise choice as she helped her teammates become the second team, only missing being first by 7 seconds, to break the 9 minute barrier in the 4x800 and of course she once again anchored her DMR team to a third national title to go on top of their Penn Relays Wheel this year too. With great weather this could be a special race to watch.

Hannah Christen

2 Mile Run

Lake Braddock (2014)

Prom and graduation may have seemed to have fallen on bad days a couple weeks ago keeping her from competing but maybe that will become a blessing in disguise. She will likely be the most rested athlete of any of the competitors. She has not run an open event in nearly a month. That has given her a chance to sit back and actually watch her competition and get in a few last workouts unlike most of the other competitors. Hannah will be very hungry to not only PR here but to beat her future teammate, Caroline Alcorta. Hannah qualifies for this meet by having finished as the runner-up at this year's Penn Relays Carnival where she ran the 3000m in 9:37.57.
