NCAA Division III South/Southeast Regional Championships Recap

PANTHERSVILLE, GA -- Both Christopher Newport University men and women's teams recorded their best regional team finishes in recent years with both men's and women's squads taking regional runner-up honors to regional meet host, Emory University. The CNU men were the top finishing VA school as their runner-up finish was the highest team finish in nearly 10 years. The Captains were led by a quartet of All-Region performers in freshmen Brandon Miles (13th, 27:02), junior Jimi Highsmith (14th, 27:10), freshmen Cary Chaffee (15th, 27:12), and junior David Bear (23rd, 27:35). Meanwhile, the CNU women's second place finish is the best ever finish in school history at the regional meet. The CNU women were led by NCAA Nationals individual qualifier senior Aimee Gibbs, who qualified for the national championships for the fourth year in a row with her third place finish (23:01). Also earning All-Region honors for Christopher Newport University were sophomore Emily Low (11th, 23:50), sophomore Megan Fogarty (13th, 24:00), and freshmen Ashley Ezell (17th, 24:24). The ODAC men were well represented individually by their upperclassmen with Roanoke College senior Jacob Pack (5th, 26:34) and Lynchburg College junior Brian Flynn (6th, 26:34) earning individual berths to NCAA Nationals with exceptional season best runs. Also, Washington & Lee senior Andrew Schorr (11th, 26:53) and Mary Washington College junior Matt Kirk (12th, 26:54) also turned in fine individual races. Douglas Freeman High School (Richmond, VA) graduate Liz Lee, now running at the University of South (Sewanee, TN) was a mere one place away from advancing to nationals with a eigth place finish (23:38).
