Millbrook wasn’t going to let Brentsville just walk away with the Northwestern District meet trophy.

No, they were going to stand up and make sure they shook the hand of each Tigers runner. They were going to tell them exactly how much they respected them just minutes after Handley athletic director Bill Stewart announced the final results and confirmed what many who saw the race suspected — it was one of the closest and most competitive meets in recent memory.

Brentsville, the three-time defending champions, edged regular-season champion Millbrook 39-41 in girls’ cross country action Thursday at Kernstown Battlefield. The Tiger boys, the three-time defending Group AA state champions, won the boys’ title by 22 points over Sherando (35-57).
